to think frozen mash is a work of genius?

I had resisted for ages but bought some on a whim earlier this year and found it incredibly handy for those nights when I'm picking up and ferrying DC to various activities. It doesn't beat the real thing but it comes pretty damn close.

Does anyone else have any genius home or food products that they expected to be crap but now use to happily to survive family life?

Yes yes to frozen cauliflower cheese from Aldi! It's fabulous darling!

Somerford · 07/10/2017 20:12

I won't buy it until Badger approves it.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 07/10/2017 20:12

It's a life saver for me. I have arthritis in my fingers and elbows, means I don't have to try and peel potatoes, always add extra milk and butter and it's lovely. Obviously it's more expensive but anything to make my life a tad easier is always going to be a bonus.

I also use loads of frozen veg. Always have loads in my freezer. Carrrots I love not having to peel and chop carrots.

Normally if we are having a roast dh will peel all the veg for me.

The stuff from the chiller tastes exactly like the Morrisons or Tesco frozen mash I buy. Exactly the same.

It doesn't taste of smash!!

positivity123 · 07/10/2017 20:15

I'm a convert to frozen food and I have to say that Icelands Zuppa di Pesce is the best fish soup i have ever tasted. It's better than a freshly made bouillabasse (is that the spelling?!) That i had in the south of France this summer.
Going to get this mash. Sounds perfect. Saw this recipe on Tesco which is froxen food galore!

Aunt Bessie's frozen mash ingredients:
Potatoes (83%), Milk (13%), Butter (4%) (Milk), Salt, White Pepper

SemiNormal · 07/10/2017 20:21

Frozen McCains ready baked jacket potatos. Take out freezer, microwave for 5 mins add filling. Taste amazing - I love those too. I mentioned them before to someone (or maybe it was on here) and got a snooty response of how they like real potatoes Confused I don't know what the fuck they thought they were made of, Playdoh or something?! Grin

dairymilkmonster · 07/10/2017 20:21

I don't find it quite meets standard for mash served straight up, but for shepherd's pie/other toppings it is great.

redexpat · 07/10/2017 20:25

Threads like this really make me miss the UK. I once got some fresh here in the chiller section and wow it made a difference to the prep time for the cottage pie. Ive never seen it since Sad

Topseyt · 07/10/2017 20:25

Another singing the praises of Tesco frozen mash.

Fab. And a £1 bag is enough for four or five people. No messy saucepan either. I just microwave it in the serving dish, stir a few times and that's it. Done.

photographyaddict · 07/10/2017 20:26

McCain’s Jacket potatoes Grin

tiirred · 07/10/2017 20:28

Of course OP could make her own and freeze it. But the point is, it saves time and effort in the first place and is quick and easy to accompany a meal.

It literally has potatoes, milk, butter salt and pepper in, no shit, so no different to home made? So no point making fresh just to freeze it?

YANBU op, it's fab stuff especially for busy people who don't always have time to make everything themselves.

ChickenVindaloo2 · 07/10/2017 20:29

Tesco used to have frozen omelettes. Just the ticket for a speedy low-carb breakfast. Not seen them for ages.

DarkDarkNight · 07/10/2017 20:30

Not frozen mash but I am never without mash from the chiller section. I am rubbish at mash, it takes too long and even with a ricer I end up with lumpy bits. I would rather just buy mash I know will be smooth and lovely.

Aunt Bessie's Carrot and Swede mash and home bake Yorkshire Puddings are my freezer staples.

Pigflewpast · 07/10/2017 20:31

Frozen sliced onions, frozen garlic, frozen fresh herbs, soffritto, frozen sliced mushrooms, frozen shallots, frozen sliced carrots.
Between them that's the base of most meals here, saves hours

Serialweightwatcher · 07/10/2017 20:32

Been buying the Tesco frozen mash for years - DS2 is still fussy at 14 so when we want to have a stew and dumplings or whatever he won't eat (chilli/bolognese/casserole/chicken in sauce etc etc etc Sad ) he has his frozen mash with plain chicken or southern fried chicken or basically dry chicken Hmm - it's made my life so much easier

monkey42 · 07/10/2017 20:33

I love packs of pre made pancakes, I know it's easy to make pancakes but on weekday would never make the effort. We have them with strawberries or bananas, ice cream and a bit of coconut from the cake cupboard!

outnumbered77 · 07/10/2017 20:34

I always have frozen mash in the freezer, along with frozen chopped onions. Fabulous inventions!

OtterlyNutty · 07/10/2017 20:34

Daisy
I've tried the frozen mash and thought it was awful! Almost as bad as Smash. I love the ready made mash you get in the chiller cabinet though.

I thought it was just me. DM served it up once, one forkful & I knew it wasn't fresh 😞

1981trouble · 07/10/2017 20:37

We are using more convenience foods recently due to extra demands on life and ready mash is certainly one of our cheats..microwave omelettes is another one of our faves.

I’m afraid, batter mix for Yorkshire’s puds are in there too and I hate to admit that one!!

TheFirstMrsDV · 07/10/2017 20:37

I love frozen mash.
I can be a bit crap at eating but if I have frozen mash I will have a 'proper' meal instead of two packets of crisps. Its so easy to do with veggies and cheese and gravy.

TheFirstMrsDV · 07/10/2017 20:38

outnumbered and frozen garlic!

saoirse31 · 07/10/2017 20:43

What's in it tho? Is it just potato's milk and butter or r there other weird ingredients?

Serialweightwatcher · 07/10/2017 20:45

And frozen mushrooms - I use them in bolognese and chilli and casseroles
