to think frozen mash is a work of genius?

I had resisted for ages but bought some on a whim earlier this year and found it incredibly handy for those nights when I'm picking up and ferrying DC to various activities. It doesn't beat the real thing but it comes pretty damn close.

Does anyone else have any genius home or food products that they expected to be crap but now use to happily to survive family life?

Ready made mashed swede, carrot and potato is beyond delicious and freezes well. Prices vary but Asda is £1.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/10/2017 19:50

Frozen mash is the work of the Gods. Frozen 'roast potatoes' and frozen so-called 'Yorkshire Puddings' are the work of the devil...

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 07/10/2017 19:51

It's so cheap as well. I don't think it would be any cheaper to make it yourself.

Love the stuff. Fucking hate mating potatoes

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 07/10/2017 19:51

*mashing

😂

Crispsheets · 07/10/2017 19:52

I love it. My comfort food is mash and poached eggs

DaisysStew · 07/10/2017 19:53

I've tried the frozen mash and thought it was awful! Almost as bad as Smash. I love the ready made mash you get in the chiller cabinet though.

Frozen, diced onion is great - I hate chopping.

SusanTheGentle · 07/10/2017 19:54

Does anyone know if you can do it yourself? We've got tons of spuds from the garden and I cba with doing mash all the time but I love it - if I could just do tons at once when they're ready to harvest and freeze it I'd be laughing.

Eminybob · 07/10/2017 19:54

We don't have a microwave so get the premade stuff in the fridge section as it can be done in the oven.
Life is too short to make your own mash.
I've just had some from Aldi today which was really nice.

MusicToMyEars800 · 07/10/2017 19:55

Crisp That's one of my fav comfort foods too Grin
I love, love, love frozen mash, I've had it from, Morrisons, Tesco and Asda, and they are all delicious!

JsOtherHalf · 07/10/2017 19:55

Tea tonight was frozen mash, meatballs, and a tomato ratatouille with frozen veg (onions, mushrooms, spinach, peppers) tinned tomatoes, chorizo, lazy garlic and chilli.

Fresh veg in our house has a tendency to be forgotten about Blush

LoudestRoar · 07/10/2017 19:56

I found out that you can set frozen mash on fire in the microwave, so you don't have to....

RaindropsAndSparkles · 07/10/2017 19:57

Brill. And frozen spinach. Sainsbury's frozen pizzas are also very very good. And bagged up Caesar salad.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/10/2017 19:58

I would never occur to me to have a poached egg with mash . . . poached eggs go with KIPPERS!

Llanali · 07/10/2017 19:58

Frozen mash, frozen diced onions, frozen chopped garlic and chilli are the work of genius.

Frozen casserole veg packs are pretty high up that spectacular scale....

Tollygunge · 07/10/2017 19:59

All the people saying why would you make your own, what's actually in the mash? Is it loads of salt and shit or just potato?

bluebump · 07/10/2017 20:00

Frozen mash is brilliant, I was dubious when I saw it but love it. But then I did used to love Smash.

londonmummy1966 · 07/10/2017 20:01

Susan yes you can make your own. I always make more than I need so I've got some in the freezer - together with bog sauce so I can do a quick assembly cottage pie when I need to.

My perfect frozen food is Iceland cauliflower cheese - bung it in the oven when I'm preparing fish pie, get it out. Quick whizz in the food processor and use it in lieu of mash as a topping. Yum.

Leeds2 · 07/10/2017 20:01

I just can't bring myself to buy it!

I love ready made mash from the chiller cabinet though.

SunnySkiesSleepsintheMorning · 07/10/2017 20:04

Mm I’m not a fan but I agree with Leeds2 about the ready made chilled mash. Mine never tastes as good, no matter how hard I try. :(

MyCatMyRules · 07/10/2017 20:07

Yy to frozen diced onions. £1 for a large packet in Morrisons and lasts for ages - tastes just as good as fresh. No peeling and chopping involved, you just use what you need. also your eyes don't end up looking like piss holes in the snow

SemiNormal · 07/10/2017 20:07

I always use microwave mash from the chilled bit, I've been scared to try frozen and I probably won't now if it tastes like Smash - that stuff is (or was backin the 90s) so salty and horrible.

Bluefrog26 · 07/10/2017 20:08

Frozen cauliflower cheese is amazing. I thought it would be awful but buy it quite often now

Rainshowers · 07/10/2017 20:09

I always have a bag of frozen soffrito (carrot, onion and celery) in the freezer. It feels lazy, but whenever I need it for the base of a sauce I always find I'm out of one of the ingredients and going to the shop means inevitably picking up ten other things I don't need!

Am intrigued by the frozen mash, think I'll need to add some to the shopping list.

Straycatblue · 07/10/2017 20:10

Frozen McCains ready baked jacket potatos. Take out freezer, microwave for 5 mins add filling. Taste amazing.

to think frozen mash is a work of genius?
MsHarry · 07/10/2017 20:11

Not tried it but in a hurry I microwave sweet potatoes in their skin like a bakes potato and mash. They cook a lot quicker.
