To ask what movie scene never fails to make you cry even after numerous watches

I’m watching Moana with the kids today, for the billionth time (I don’t mind as I love the film) and no matter how hard I try I always cry at the scene where the grandma tells Moana to go and find Maui, then she’s dies and her spirit fish swims into the sea and above Moana. You’d think I would be immune to it by now, but no!

What makes you cry every time?

‘The last scene of Stand By Me makes me cry, with River Phoenix's character just fading out as it's so hauntingly prophetic but the scene that makes me cry like a baby is when Phoenix's character Chris breaks down and cries in the middle of the forest because he feels like he has no chance in life and is pre-judged because of his family's reputation and he just wanted the opportunity to be treated like any other kid instead of automatically being labeled as "that kid". It kills me because I know this is still the reality for some kids - people hear they're "One of the Smith kids" and make assumptions about them and perpetuates a cycle that most of them will never get out of.’

Me too-and especially because I read that the director told River Phoenix to think about something that made him really sad, and he was sobbing so much that afterwards he gave him a hug, and River told him he’d been thinking about how difficult his early life had been 😥

Not a film but the bit in my little pony, where the cutie mark crusaders realise helping others find their special talents is so much more rewarding than searching for theirs. Then they all get matching cutie marks, oh god I'm welling up just typing this. It's just so lovely and when their sisters sing about how proud they arg. Oh god the tears

LongWavyHair · 09/10/2017 13:18

Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
Where he is getting older on the inside but younger on the outside, and he dies as an old
man but on he outside he is a baby. Never fails to get me that film. The whole story is sad.

gloriawasright · 09/10/2017 14:10

Far too many to list but the one that comes to mind first is Ghost as it was on TV the other night.

StigmaStyle · 09/10/2017 17:38

I cry a lot at kids films - the bit in Tangled where the servant goes to let the king and queen know she's been found. Jessie's song in Toy story BLUB. And the start of UP is just disastrous - in the cinema I cried so much people were shushing me Blush. hen we watched it at home a few years later and I thought "Oh I can handle this now, I've seen it before." Nope. Emotional wreck all over again.

In adults' films, I cried so much at the end of I've Loved You So Long with Kristin Scott Thomas. OMG. Amazing film but so, so, so sad :(

gloriawasright · 09/10/2017 19:18

@Willow2017
Oh so many .every season has a moment that takes your breath away .
When Sophie bursts out of the barn with the other zombies 😭for weeks we had no clue she was there .
When carol takes the girl to look at the flowers ,
Daryl can bring me to tears with just one of his 'looks' he can be so sad .
That eeny meny miny mo at the end of the season when we didn't know who had been killed .
I can't wait for it to start again 👍👍

JAPAB · 09/10/2017 19:56

Just remembered a SNES game that made me sad. You are a human and there is some sort of floor collapse and you end up underground with a pair of goats who are husband and wife. But the wife explains that the husband was killed in the collapse, and when you interact with him it says
"doesn't appear to be breathing..."

So you and the wife try to find a way out but it turns out that the only way is by climbing up a rockface that she, as a goat, cannot climb. So she tells you to go on without her, and she'll figure something else out.

Anyway, a long time later it becomes possible to go back to that area, so I climbed back down and now the wife was lying next to her husband and when you interact with her, it says "doesn't appear to be breathing..." for her now also.

Well, it made me sad as a kid.

End of Toy Story Three and the bit where Mr Magorium sits down to die.

steff13 · 09/10/2017 20:02

The end of It's a Wonderful Life, when Harry toasts George, "to my big brother George, the richest man in town." Gets me every time.

Dontknowwherethelineis · 10/10/2017 00:52

Good Will Hunting where Robin Williams is basically telling Matt Damon to fuck off because he doesn't know anything about love and describes his love for his dead wife. He was an amazing actor.

ilovepixie · 10/10/2017 01:09

Dustbunny1900 · 10/10/2017 02:47

Oml, jesses song "when somebody loves you" is the saddest song in cartoon history, how could I have forgotten 😭😭😰

BitOutOfPractice · 10/10/2017 03:04

The bit at the end of Sixth Sense when the little boy tells his mom that he sees her mother, who is dead. He tells his mom that the answer to her question is “every day” and asks her what the question is. She tells him it’s “fo I make you proud?” I’ve cried a bit typing that FGS. M

And the bit in the araulway Children when her father comes home. “Daddy, my daddy”

TossDaily · 10/10/2017 03:33

Lots of the above. Also, the scene in Dumbo when he's in the parade and he's all proud then realises the crowd are laughing at him Sad

The end of Pan's Labyrinth.

Not a film, but the Van Gogh episode of Dr Who destroyed me.

But Toy Story 3 is a film I'll never watch again. DS1 adored Toy Story as a tiny child and has just left home. I was bad enough when I saw it at the cinema - I cried so much XH had to drive us home because I couldn't see properly.

If I watched it now I'd probably just explode or something Sad
