To ask what movie scene never fails to make you cry even after numerous watches

I’m watching Moana with the kids today, for the billionth time (I don’t mind as I love the film) and no matter how hard I try I always cry at the scene where the grandma tells Moana to go and find Maui, then she’s dies and her spirit fish swims into the sea and above Moana. You’d think I would be immune to it by now, but no!

What makes you cry every time?

The last 10-15 minutes of It's a Wonderful Life, even though I watch it every year. In fact I'm welling up now just thinking about it!

Sanoffyhighstepson · 07/10/2017 09:18

V for Vendetta, Valeries monologue. I wail every single time. As soon as she says, “ for 3 years we had roses, and apologised to no-one” I am bawling.

Tastesjustlikecherrycola85 · 07/10/2017 09:22

The ending of Moulin Rouge

isthismummy · 07/10/2017 10:41

The final scene of Glory. The entire regiment are killed in battle and it's a slow motion scene of them all being buried in a mass grave. I first saw it when I was fourteen and was inconsolable. Just utterly heartbreaking.

Withnail and I where they are saying their goodbyes in the rain. You just know they are never going to see each other again. I've watched that film countless times and it still makes me well up.

Hazel's death at the end of Watership Down.

Richard Harrow's death in Boardwalk Empire absolutely broke me. I felt sad for days afterwards and it still gets me now. I really, really wish the writers had given him the happy ending he deserved. Bastards.

ladymariner · 07/10/2017 10:50

sockgap me too, its Christmas when I've watched that!
First ten minutes of Up should have a health warning.
Toy Story 3 makes me absolutely sob
ET when the flowers come back to life
Terms of endearment when Debra winger is dying

thepondstakemanhatten · 07/10/2017 11:00

The Railway Children is one of mine too - I've loved it since I was little

Pride when they all come to march at the end - makes me sob every time

I can never watch the ending of Armegeddon without getting choked up

thepondstakemanhatten · 07/10/2017 11:03

Forgot to mention Snape in Harry Potter - his 'always' gets me every time

MsGameandWatching · 07/10/2017 11:55

And The Good Dinosaur when the father gets washed away (another film ds now refuses to watch, bless him).

Dd and I looked at each other and burst out laughing at this Blush. It was the dad's expression on his face.

CockacidalManiac · 07/10/2017 13:43

Has the ending of the Iron Giant been mentioned yet?

Dustbunny1900 · 07/10/2017 13:49

"Up" doesn't get me crying either..but the ghost children in coralline do..and land before time as I've already mentioned. Different things will choke people up because of their experiences

missmollyhadadolly · 07/10/2017 13:52

Inside Out when Sadness finally gets to help Riley and Riley tells her parents:

"I know you don't want me to, but... I miss home. I miss Minnesota. You need me to be happy, but I want my old friends, and my hockey team. I wanna go home. Please don't be mad."

It always makes me cry. I think there's alot of pressure on women to present a smiley facade, at home and at work.

missmollyhadadolly · 07/10/2017 13:56

Sense and Sensibility

When Elinor fears that Marianne will die:

"Marianne, please try... I cannot... I cannot do without you. Oh, please, I have tried to bear everything else... I will try... but please, dearest, beloved Marianne, do not leave me alone."

Marianne is so, so important to Elinor.

missmollyhadadolly · 07/10/2017 13:57

Sorry, meant to say Emma Thompson as Elinor!

BaggypantsCrimplesnitch · 07/10/2017 15:02

@Don'tDrinkDon'tSmoke - that's the one! And yes, I think you're right. It was a little boy.

Albatross26 · 07/10/2017 15:16

Tim Burton's corpse bride, at the end where she turns into butterflies, it's beautiful

Willow2017 · 07/10/2017 15:18

Noticed 'The Lake House' was on and I love that film forgot about it earlier on thread. Cue me snivveling when 'Kate' sends 'Alex' his father's book with his photo in it, that wouldn't be printed for another 2yrs and the ending when she is waiting my by the mail box and they reunite. Good job I had tissues nearby😀

applespearsbears · 07/10/2017 15:32

ET - 'I'll be right here'
Daddy my daddy - literally sobbing by this point
Start of Up
Schindlers list
The English Patient

marymoosmum · 07/10/2017 17:12

The end of Homeward Bound gets me every time. The end of the beaches, the bit where Bambi's mother dies.

marymoosmum · 07/10/2017 17:14

The end of pretty much every Christmas film as well. Lol!

CodeineAndCornflakes · 07/10/2017 17:21

Haven't managed to RTFT because I keep crying but Casper (1995 film) saying "Can I keep you?" to Cat while they float together in the air together at the Disco ruins me every time.

Twinkie1 · 07/10/2017 17:24

When A Man Loves a Woman with Meg Ryan and Andy (Oh so beautiful) Garcia. Most of the bloody film.

gloriawasright · 07/10/2017 17:38

Cool runnings ,when they walk over the line after their crash .the applause and respect they all the other competitors ,who had previously mocked them .
and of course John candy's pride for his team .
Can't even type it without welling up .

strawberrysalsa · 07/10/2017 17:53

I must have a cold starting because I have gone through a pile of tissues reading this.

A lot of my weepiest moments have already been listed, Dumbo is an obvious one. But I have to add in the original, and I think best, Titanic film A Night to Remember. I am usually sobbing long before the iceberg hits.

Another film that has me welling cup just thinking about it is Invictus, the last 10 minutes or so are so powerful. Blindside also makes me sob, as does the scene scene in Deep Impact where the mother gives her elder daughter her baby...typing this seems to be making my cold worse, I seem to need more tissues.

strawberrysalsa · 07/10/2017 17:54

I'm blaming my poor typing on sniffing and dabbling my eyes

AsSummerTurnsToAutumn · 07/10/2017 17:56

Truly, Madly, Deeply. Great out of character sobs, tissues needed. This is when I also fell in love with the, (sadly now late), Alan Rickman.

A Monster Calls, (as a Mum).

The Book Thief. Having said that, I haven't watched it right to the end yet. I was watching it with my DC, who had already seen it. They warned me not to watch the end unless I was feeling on particularly strong form and said they couldn't watch it again themselves that day, so we switched it off before the end. We've both suggested watching it several times since, but haven't both felt up to facing it on the same day! I might wonder what all the fuss was about when I do, but it clearly hits the tearjerker spot with DC.
