To have expected logs to be stacked?

Changerazelea · 05/10/2017 17:55

Had a delivery of logs today, delivery driver tipped them in my driveway and then proceeded to tell me "We don't stack love"
Spent the next 2 hours moving and stacking them into my garage while DS screamed and I berated myself for not being assertive enough to have insisted driver helped me move into garage.
Does common courtesy no longer exist? Driver seeing me with baby in arms surely should have offered to help...
First world problems but AIBU?

I had a fridge from John Lewis. The deliverymen didn't say: 'Here it is love. Plug it in yourself,' even though I could have. It was part of the service.

The last sentence being key.

Stacking in this case was not part of the service.

limitedperiodonly · 05/10/2017 19:18

The thing is that his next customer might have wanted help because they had an arm in a sling. And the next one might have wanted help because they had a bad back. And on and on.

That's the point of providing a service. If you help people who aren't all physically fit or enthusiastic, you can charge a bit more. Let's be honest, most of us aren't up to humping a winter's load of logs. I'd be nonplussed by someone who dumped them in front of my house and told me to get on with it 'love'. I wouldn't use them again

Expemsiveuniform · 05/10/2017 19:20

Limited then you use a service that does stack - and you likely pay more because they can’t just giveaway free 2hours if work per delivery.

Redglitter · 05/10/2017 19:28

The driver probably presumed that the baby wasn't a permanent fixture 'in arms' and would be put in a pram etc at some point. I could understand more if someone had maybe a physical disability but a baby- ehm no.

limitedperiodonly · 05/10/2017 19:33

I agree that is all down to the service agreement. But people are terribly keen to come down on the side of workmen and berate customers, particularly if they are perceived to be 'entitled' in some way.

Sometimes workmen are cunts and you are entitled to be entitled.

SilverySurfer · 05/10/2017 19:35

BarbarianMum
If only it were possible to put babies down...
If only someone had thought to design a portable contraption that would hold a baby outdoors......

That's a fantastic idea and will make someone a fortune. (Rushes off to design baby carriers - I shall name them pram and buggy and they will be sold throughout the world) grin]

Expemsiveuniform · 05/10/2017 19:35

In what way was this man a cunt?

That’s a bit strong considering he didn’t do anything wrong.

(Unless the op paid for stacking in which case he should’ve stacked)

5rivers7hills · 05/10/2017 19:37

Ordinarily I totally get it but it is really unreasonable to have expected some help as I had a baby in arms?

Put baby down. Stack logs.

MadMags · 05/10/2017 19:40

Unless your baby was surgically attached to your arms, you're being ridiculous!

And actually, even if baby was surgically attached, that's still not his problem!

Bluntness100 · 05/10/2017 19:41

It depends on the compamy and usually on their website it says if it’s stacked or dropped. I’ve had both and in my experience those who stack charge more. The cheaper ones tip and leave.

I have empathy, it’s back breaking stacking them but you get what you pay for.

Altwoo · 05/10/2017 19:43

So you think that because you have a baby, you should get better service than someone who is childless? Where else do you think you should benefit additionally for having a kid?

Expemsiveuniform · 05/10/2017 19:43

How did he kno the baby was yours? If I borrow a baby could I get my log man to stack do you think.p?

Expemsiveuniform · 05/10/2017 19:45

Arsing Phone.

That’s what they say with logs.

Warm you three times.

Once when you cut them.

Once when you stack them.

And once when you burn them.

Onthehighseas · 05/10/2017 19:50

Let's be honest, most of us aren't up to humping a winter's load of logs.

Eh? I've had major spinal surgery and I could do it. Slowly, but I could bloody do it....

limitedperiodonly · 05/10/2017 19:55

In what way was this man a cunt?

If you've never come across a cunty workman you're exceptionally lucky. But that's not the point. If the OP paid for a particular service or was misled into thinking it was part of the service, then his behaviour was wrong. If she misunderstood then he should have explained it and been on his way. It's not hard.

However, many people offer service above and beyond payment because they find themselves in a situation where they consider the person to be deserving. I sometimes do it. Maybe the OP was that person. The deliveryman couldn't or didn't want to help her.

existentialmoment · 05/10/2017 19:57

The deliveryman would be FIRED if he spent 2 hours at a time stacking logs for customers when he isn't actually paid to do so.

It's really not him being a cunt, it's those calling him one who are.

Expemsiveuniform · 05/10/2017 19:59

This particular workman was not a cunt.

If stacking was needed the op should have specified. She will know better next time. When her babe in arms is up a bit too

Fruitcocktail6 · 05/10/2017 19:59

I think YABU. Purely because you've said something like this as I had a baby in arms? several times and it's irritating.

Put the baby down ffs.

Josieannathe2nd · 05/10/2017 20:00

We pay extra to get them stacked- takes them about 45 mins- it’s not a quick ‘favour’ or giving you a hand it’s a job that takes time. Choose a different company next time.

limitedperiodonly · 05/10/2017 20:01

I've had major spinal surgery and I could do it. Slowly, but I could bloody do it....

Well done you Onthehighseas. Does anyone want to raise on that?

limitedperiodonly · 05/10/2017 20:04

So he should just say 'I'm sorry Madam, but I have no time to do that.'

Mulberry72 · 05/10/2017 20:07

YABVU.

GrumpyOldBag · 05/10/2017 20:09

We get a log delivery every winter - a trailer load. Also dumped on the drive.

We always expect to stack it ourselves.

I try to time it for when the DC are around to help.

YABVU.

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/10/2017 20:09

Why would a log company care if you have a baby or not? They are not there to ease chores for you

Lockheart · 05/10/2017 20:10

My mum and I stacking the logs every year is a tradition! The dogs “help” too of course Grin I’m afraid YABU to expect them to stack the logs unless you’ve actually paid for them to do it. The baby can go in a pram for a couple of hours.
