Just moved into new property and the budget is tight for carpets.
I need living room, bedroom and hall/stairs done for around £700.
My plan is to measure rooms and go to the carpet store and look for offcuts.
My dad said "no you go in and ask for the cheapest carpet they do"
I said no I want to check out the offcuts first and maybe use a cheap carpet for the stairs but nicer offcuts for living /bedroom.
Then my dad starts swearing "you think you know it all,you never listen " in a loud voice.
I want new counter tops and he says
"You don't need them, waste of time,"
Then once again shouting that I'm ignorant and never listen, know it all etc .
How is that the case? I'm listening but I have a different idea..
If I don't agree with him he calls me every name under the sun
Aibu by not going in and asking for cheapest carpet?

Tbh I would do both. Look at te off cuts AND the cheapest carpets.
I would outbthe good quality draper in the stairs because that's what will get the most bashing.
Cheaper one for the bedrooms.
I would also go and look at small independent shops. The one we have in our small towns is great, just as cheap as the 'cheap' carpet shops once you've added the underlay etc... but the carpet is often better quality and you get proper advice (e.g. on where it's important to have a better quality carpet)

Worktop... it depends of the condition they are in really.

Re measuring, do it yourself and then ask them if they could come over and give you a proper quote for it (they will need to come and do the measurements themselves - less risk of an error and if there is it will be THEIR error rather than yours)

OP you could be me. "You think you know it all, you never listen" is a classic line from my father.

How I've dealt with it: never run anything by him. Just do it. He had very strong views about what I proposed to do to/spend on my flat. I just did it. When he saw it done he had to admit it worked. And I never accept anything from him so he can't do the "I paid for this" line. I think he respects me more for taking this approach and our relationship is better than it's ever been.

Be careful measuring yourself and trying to fit offcuts. It could be a false economy if they turn out to not quite fit. Better to spend more on hardwear areas than rooms you will spend little time in.
