I work for the government, so my salary is public information. However, there's a theory that keeping salaries a secret can keep people from being paid fairly.

Depends what you do. Most jobs -no. Chartered Accountant- £45-50k

OH and I work as a team.
My OH would not have been able to work such long hours, advance his career, spend time travelling abroad with work if I had not been there to support him.
I was unable to work for many years as a SAHM, no family support, and a son who had health problems and never more than 80% attendance at school.
I had to dig deep to find a way to earn money from home working around my commitments.

You suggest that I am in some kind of privileged position having my OH support my little vanity project- in fact quite the opposite- I would loved to have gone back to work, but not possible.

I made the best I could of my circumstances- and yes it has paid off.

CS so salaries public too.

millifiori · 07/10/2017 18:07

I earn a fair bit more than that pro rata, but don't work full time, so it comes in at under 50k. It's possible. I have a skillset that is used in lots of different ways, so the jobs I do are freelance and varied.

Oh god, won't someone think of the children?

Oldie2017 · 07/10/2017 22:18

In what sense? I would have thought those of us who earn a lot of money and work from home probably do very well by our children surely in all respects?

Teachers by the way consider extra work at weekends. My children's father teaches music often from 9am right through the day every Saturday at whatever hourly rate you pay for private individual music lessons. That's at home although sometimes he goes to their houses. My medical family members do some private work with clients at home part time too in addition to other work.
I do quite a bit of legal writing from home ( as well as legal advice which is mostly by email and phone).

If you did a few ILEX qualifications it might be worth trying to qualify in law, Read the new plans for qualification which seem a bit weird and wrong to me but the powers that be are pressing ahead with - probably some kind of dumbed down multiple choice part 1 exam and then a part 2 and immediately bob's your uncle you can set up on your own - God help the clients.

speakout · 07/10/2017 22:36

OhThisbloodyComputer I don't really get that comment.

Me working from home has been great for the kids.I'm always at home, no childminders, no after school clubs. Always there for assemblies and sports days, transport for extra curricular stuff.
No worries about taking days off when kids are sick and off school. I can ramp up my work during term time and cut right back during school holidays. I can combine housework with work, so take short breaks to hang laundry, put food in the oven.
It works brilliantly with family life and caring for kids.

Am absolutely intrigued to know what speakout makes and sells - I can only think of it being something super pervy!

speakout · 07/10/2017 22:52

Nothing pervy. Sorry to disappoint.

mishfish · 07/10/2017 22:54

I can do but young children limits the time I work. I have a professional qualification specific to what I do

MrsArchchancellorRidcully · 07/10/2017 22:57

I earn a lot more than that. But I'm a qualified accountant.

Plus it just means I'm based at home not in an office. My kids are in child care just the same as if I worked in an office out of the home.

PoppyPopcorn · 07/10/2017 23:01

Is MLM the same as pyramid schemes? Our NDNs do this in a therapy/self-fulfilment field. They make loads of money.

No they don't. They TELL you they make loads of money which isn't the same thing at all. Fake it till you make it.

Pollaidh · 08/10/2017 22:37

To clarify, my DC are never at home when I'm working. It would be impossible. They're at nursery/school, and we also have an after-school nanny. My home office is away from the rest of the house, with a lockable door. Actually most of my (decent) salary goes on childcare.
