Does anyone successfully do this ?

I'm after inspiration .

OP posts:

Eh what? Everyone on the thread has shared very general information. I've said that I freelance as a web content writer, but I've never said that anyone else could do exactly the same.

Freelancers aren't daft. None of the legal bods are posting that they freelance with Dodgy, Sue and Wills and are earning £40 per hour as of course anyone with a similar background would be straight on the email to Mr Dodgy offering their services.

And without blowing my trumpet, I know that not everyone can do what I do. Not everyone has the vast portfolio of work I've built up over the years to show customers. Not everyone can direct clients to feedback from previous happy customers. Hell, not everyone can string a sentence together in a grammatically correct manner.

In fact, have you even read the thread??

speakout · 06/10/2017 18:50

poppy- exactly.

I make and sell craft items. I earn £50K a year Some posters have been critical, suggesting that it's not possible, from "glitter and glue" I have been vague about my products which are niche, unusual and appeal to a specialist interest.
I don't want to give any more details of my actual products, for various reasons,
Hardly handing things to people on a spoon.

DiegoMadonna · 06/10/2017 18:58

I believe ohthisbloodycomputer was talking generally about those "earn $4000 a week from home" spammers, rather than actually having read the thread.

PoppyPopcorn · 06/10/2017 19:01

You won't get any argument here about MLM - all of those schemes are an outright scam which promise the earth and in most cases, deliver losses.

speakout · 06/10/2017 19:02

So not a very insightful post

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 06/10/2017 19:09

What kind of things are people selling online for £50k a year?

Not old pants and stinky trainers I hope? Grin

speakout · 06/10/2017 19:13

I make and sell new craft items.

Materials cost me peanuts. The products have added value- they are functional and appealing ( as sales echo).

I sell on ebay, Amazon and my own web site. I do some local trade and wholesale in UK and abroad. I make to order for special occasions.

No pants or dirty trainers.

happyinherts · 06/10/2017 19:16

I have earned circa £1k a week self employed working from home, but taking into account pitching for work, negotiating, invoicing etc, I probably put in 90 hour weeks. It's too stressful, not good for your health and I'm happier to earn between £300 and £400. It's important to take time out to exercise / hobby and these are the things which fall by the wayside when you're self employed.

You mean like a living doll full body latex suit:

caringcarer · 06/10/2017 19:30

People who walk dogs seem to earn a lot. One woman near me takes six dogs out at the same time and she told me she is paid by their owners to walk them. It would be quite a commitment though and she takes them even if it is raining. I think she also looks after some of them at her own home when their owners on holiday. If you could get enough dogs to walk and walked six at a time every day I expect you would earn £50k

speakout · 06/10/2017 19:33

happyinherts Absolutely- it's all about the balance.

I only work 20 hours a week. I could earn more if I put in more hours but I like a balanced life. Three mornings a week at the gym, time to myself, I have teens to ferry around, activities, cooking.
I can earn enough in 20 hours.
OH is on an OK salary, and that's enough.
Plus my job is creative, I need time to explore new ideas, new products. That doesn't happen if I am too busy and stressed.

I see going to the gym and keeping my mind in a good place as central to my success!

CountryLovingGirl · 06/10/2017 19:49

Is anyone a medical writer?

I'm NHS and would love to know how to get into this field as I desperately want to ditch nightshifts and awful 'other' shifts and do something else, but still using my skills. Working from home would be great too :-)

thereallochnessmonster · 06/10/2017 19:51

The woman who runs the doggy daycare place I use makes more than that, but she obviously has to be outside the actual house, albeit on her own grounds, for most of the day

Man alive! Really?? So there's that much money in dog walking and dog sitting?

speakout · 06/10/2017 20:00

My DDs friends mother does doggy day care.

£20 a day per dog, often overnight board for holidays, £30 a day for a week or two at a a time.

She generally has 10 dogs a day ( average sized family home)

So she is billing £240 a day.
£6K a month.

£72K a year revenue.

She is a single parent, runs a new Mercedes, no mortgage, has several holidays a year ( this year so far has been Madrid, New York and Cape Verde with her DD).

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 06/10/2017 20:01

I do IT contract work which is all from home. I earn between 70-80k per annum when I take on a contract. However, I’ve got 20 years experience in the field and although I’ve technically been a ‘sahm’ since 2003 because I used to work with DH in his IT company, and he has moved on but maintained his extensive contacts, so I’ve sort of maintained them too IYSWIM. No one employing me on a short term contract basis (and I really do pick and choose what/when I do them) is questioning my credentials or why I’ve been out for 14 years. I am fully aware that this would not be the case if I was living in the real world without DH help. As it happens I am good at what I do and I could work full time if I wanted but that would mean gradually doing too much away from home, client visits, travelling to meetings in London etc, and I don’t want to because tbh it’s a bloody boring job. So I’m looking to come up with something that I can do for myself, using my current skills, and do a lot of it from home. I’m thinking maybe consultancy from the client perspective rather than the IT company perspective (so I don’t get bogged down in the rubbish!). So, OP, what is it you want to do? Your skills sound impressive. I’m not familiar with the role though, are you looking to do something to use your current skills, if so do ILEX legal secretaries freelance? Or are you wanting to completely retrain? If so, I don’t think focusing on the monthly pay check is the best starting point. It’s got to be something you really want to do and will enjoy. Like I said, I could earn 80k, but I’d be bored out of my skull and I could not sustain it for any length of time.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 06/10/2017 20:06

I earn 30k a year in a call centre wfh, I presume the supervisors etc who work from home earn a bit more. All "unskilled" work.

GrumpyOldBag · 06/10/2017 20:07

I do. Self-employed with my own company providing a very specialised consultancy service to other businesses.

pumpkinpieinmyeye · 06/10/2017 20:27

DH has a £50k basic plus commission working in software sales.

Thebluedog · 06/10/2017 20:33

Yes I do. But I have spent years working my way to this position to enable me to do it. I still have to go out and about visiting customers, but I'm based from home and sort my own diary so it's never an inconvenience.

Thebluedog · 06/10/2017 20:38

I don't sell anything, Im a full time employee for IT company. We sell IT services to various companies and I have a number of these customers to look after. It's my responsibility to ensure they get what they pay for in a nutshell. I really enjoy the work as I can work it around taking the dogs for a walk and collecting the kids now and again from school and I can usually make all the school plays/harvest festivals etc. It can be hard work but I find it really rewarding and I love the working from home. It's very common for people who do the same job to work from home rather than out of an office.

Loulou0 · 06/10/2017 20:44

I earn £40k working from home. I work for a charity in senior management. Took me a long time to get to this level though.

LookingforMaryPoppins · 06/10/2017 20:44

Yes, and more but professional qualification

Nomorechickens · 07/10/2017 09:04

Is MLM the same as pyramid schemes? Our NDNs do this in a therapy/self-fulfilment field. They make loads of money. They are quite loopy though and I'm not recommending it. Exploiting the vulnerable.
Please don't become a dog walker walking 6+ dogs at a time! Antisocial for other park users.

KnowsStuff · 07/10/2017 11:55

Speakout "I have teens to ferry around"
So unless you are a single parent (whose ex is required by law to provide financial support for any children until they age 18) - you have the financial security /help from your husband while building up to earning 50k only working 20 hours. Didn't do it by yourself as OH's situation

OhThisbloodyComputer · 07/10/2017 12:32

I'm always a bit wary about people who tell everyone how much they earn.
