Are Petit Filous really that bad? What yoghurts do you give to your kids?

From the "is this an acceptable tea" thread yesterday, there was a lots of comments about PF's being bad. So, what yoghurts does everyone give their kids? I need some ideas!

OP posts:

Mine like the half and half ones - they're called magic yoghurts in this house. Basically petit filou type thing with extra thickener, I think.

Also value creme caramel... I dread to think what's in those. They like turning them upside down and pulling the tab off. I tell myself this is educating them about physics.

Meh. They eat chopped fruit with natural yoghurt too.

RosyPony · 05/10/2017 00:12

Liberte Greek yoghurt, same amount of sugar as a petite filou but the pot is twice the size.

He eats a varied diet, rarely has sweets, regularly has cake and eats plenty of fruit and veg so I don't think a yogurt is going to kill him.

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/10/2017 00:14

Dd likes Greek yoghurt. I bash a little dark chocolate up in it to give a little bitter/sweet edge. Think 200g yoghurt to max one chunk. She ate it plain as a baby but won’t now. Petit filous are full of sugar as are most flavoured yoghurts. Annoyingly, the ones aimed at children are in the most part higher in sugar content than the adult equivalent. Once dd went to nursery she refused Greek yoghurt as they gave Rachel’s flavoured yoghurt so I do buy her flavoured ones. Dd does have it occasionally with a little jam and granola for pudding.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 05/10/2017 00:18

Oh lordy,Skyr is revolting stuff,no flavour at allConfusedGrin

Greek yoghurt for me,just plain.

Da was brought up on petit filous though, they were the least of our problems Grin

AnneGrommit · 05/10/2017 00:19

I get tubs of Greek yoghurt and add a spoonful of berries to their bowls. My mum thinks this is a terrible pudding because yoghurt is a health food so can't be a treat but honestly mine like it. I don't really have anything against petit filous and the like - I just never bothered buying them.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 05/10/2017 00:21

DS eats plain natural yogurt. This is literally the only decent thing in his super-fussy diet so do excuse me if I take a moment to be smug.

ViserionTheDragon · 05/10/2017 00:26

I'm with AnneGrommit on the Greek yoghurt and berries. Add a bit of honey if they really need it. Petit Filous is a sugar bomb for kids!

CocoPuffsinGodMode · 05/10/2017 00:28

I know some are better than others but I can’t get too worked up about yogurt. For most children if it doesn’t have any sweetness it’s not going to be eaten! It seems to be one of those things that makes MNers recoil in horror at the moment but bloody hell judging by some of the “what’s in your dc lunch box” threads I’ve seen, plenty of children are eating far worse than yogurt with a bit of sugar in.

OlennasWimple · 05/10/2017 00:30

Plain yoghurt is just....so....plain..... I eat it on my museli, or with fruit, but never just on its own

M&S and Morrisons yoghurts used to be decent, but TBH the PF pots are so small that I wouldn't sweat it if they eat them every day

FeedMyFaceWithBattenberg · 05/10/2017 00:35

I don't think one Petit flious a day will kill anyone plus they're bloody delicious

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 05/10/2017 00:36

Petit Filou isn't yoghurt, it's fromage frais.

Chocolate flavour is best.

But ffs don't waste it on the children Grin

silkybear · 05/10/2017 00:39

not really helpful but this thread reminds me of my mum giving toddler DD 3 petit filous after dinner one night and her running around the room at full speed shouting and doing jazz hands until 9pm. Hilarious now but not then!! plain greek yogurt with a bit of jam on top works quite well here.

Ginnotginger · 05/10/2017 00:46

My DGS aged 4 eats Muller corners - I used to buy the fruit ones but he came shopping with me once and spotted both the chocolate digestive biscuit and the shortcake biscuit ones.

xqwertyx · 05/10/2017 00:48

DS 5 has natural yoghurt with a bit of honey or jam mixed in. Still has sugar in it but i suppose i can regulate how much and what kind.

Migraleve · 05/10/2017 00:55

I have never given mine yoghurt! It seems to be an absolute staple part of toddlers diets but I missed that and it never crossed my mind to buy them yogurt. I suppose because I don’t eat them I don’t buy them kind of thing, just like mushrooms Grin

Insomnibrat · 05/10/2017 01:10

I wish they still made those Fiendish Feet yogurts, back in the days when we brushed our teeth with coal and strung our washing out in the back alley.

MrsOverTheRoad · 05/10/2017 01:12

Mine occassionaly have natural greekstyle yogurt with a bit of honey in it...but it's a sort of treat...it's not a staple food you know OP.

You don't HAVE to buy it.

kateandme · 05/10/2017 01:18

Balance.these aren't baaaaawd.as long as the other stuffs a balance.what next.what shouldn't we be having....next?

steff13 · 05/10/2017 01:22

I usually buy plain Greek yogurt, but I add a little frozen fruit and raw honey.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 05/10/2017 02:09

They do have high sugar but most yoghurts do. Unless you go down the plain Greek yoghurt route, but lets face it not everyone is keen on the taste. Even with honey etc mixed in I think the you still get the bitter after taste coming through.

I buy what ever is on offer, so long as it's not a low fat (aka very high sugar/full of chemicals) version.

DD loves yollies but I limit them as they are not the healthiest. She also likes the little pouches.

I like the little yeos - a few years back I only ever bought organic dairy products but I can't afford that now. I do like to give her probiotic yoghurt drinks but they can be very expensive so I only buy them when they go on offer (she dislikes the cheap Aldi version I drink myself)

MrsOverTheRoad · 05/10/2017 02:22

I don't know why people see them as a staple though...they're not something that's meant to be eaten daily.

IAmNotAWitch · 05/10/2017 02:36

Meh, my kids have novelty yoghurts sometimes, its fine.

Day to day though (and I am going to get hammered for this) I keep a 'chia pot' thing in the fridge.

Full fat greek yoghurt, chia seeds, a paleo meusli blend (more seeds/nuts/coconut etc), dried cranberries, vanilla bean paste and cinnamon.

The teenage boy can eat an IMMENSE amount of food generally but this is so packed with protein and fat he doesn't need that much to be satisfied.

Monday to Friday, we eat a lentil weaving vegetarian low sugar/carb diet.

Weekends/holidays are whatever the hell we feel like.

Seems to work, we are all in rude health.

liminality · 05/10/2017 03:58

I make my own coconut yoghurt, it luterally takes under 2 mins and tastes like a dream. Not a boast, my mum taught me and I was amazed how stupidly easy it is. Will never buy it again

IAmNotAWitch · 05/10/2017 04:49

liminality you can't make a statement like that without providing a recipe/instructions. Grin

WishUponAStar88 · 05/10/2017 05:00

Ooh how limitality
