DP thinks my new hobby (sprinting) is obnoxious.

Recently, in the spirit of health, I have decided to start running again. I'm not a fan of long distance jogging, so have opted to do sets of 100/200m sprints. The usual pavement I do my running on is about 10+m wide, so no worries there isn't a chance of me crashing into anyone.

My issue now, is that DP has told me (more than once), that what I'm doing is obnoxious and attention seeking. Confused

AIBU to think that's complete bollocks?

RunningOutOfCharge · 05/10/2017 20:43

i'd rather be a knob than a slob!!

DemonBaby · 05/10/2017 20:44

I actually quite like running as exercise goes, I just do it in the park.

scottishretreat · 05/10/2017 20:50

Loads of people run on the pavements or along the roads here - as long as you're not getting in anyone's way. All the parks are pretty small here - you'd have to run round and round them several times!

DemonBaby · 05/10/2017 20:50

That's exactly what I do!

WellThisIsShit · 05/10/2017 20:52

I'd say, but eccentric but as long as there's room and you're being considerate, then... errr, fine, surely?!

What's not fine is your weirdo partner. Where are his insults and nasty judgements coming from?

Has he forgotten that your supposed to love and support your loved ones, not be the first one ready to knock them down.

Is he embarrassed or feeling cringed due to his own personal hang ups? Which is rather idiotic of him and he needs to look at himself, not you, to work out why he's being rather vicious to the woman he loves... makes him look rather small and revolting doesn't it?

Anyway, back to YOU... it comes under the heading of 'all part of life's rich tapestry' to me. Variety and randomness is a lovely part of being alive, and I wish we humans didn't slam down hard on anyone who isn't ordinary and conforms in every single way.

Assuming that you don't expect everyone else to be changing course to accommodate you, and that if me and DS happened down the same pavement you wouldn't get arsey with us for not being able to hop miraculously sideways to bow down to your superior presence! And yes, that's what loooads of people do to me (crap body, have to use wheels), I think I'm only allowed out in public on sufferance and should be tugging a forelock and letting the higher status twerps on by!

The more the merrier though, in terms of using public space to do all kinds of wonderous things... and sprints are definitely wonderous from my pov! Grin

AuntieStella · 05/10/2017 21:20

I've got a copy of The Lore Of Running too. It's just over 2inches thick, and I hadn't really thought of its potential as a weapon....

I'm glad you explained a bit further ago, because what you are doing is fartlek - it's a proper technique and you'll know you're a real runner when you can say it with a straight face.

(it's Swedish for 'speed play')

And it's fine to do it on a wide promenade.

echidna1 · 05/10/2017 21:22

Susan (@ 1852).....I started running last Feb. through the 'Run Together' website (put in your postcode and it'll come up with all your local C25K groups)
We had a fantastic run leader who backed up the course with:

  • lots of warm up and cool down exercises, as well as
  • core strength daily exercises. Nothing got missed;
  • there was also back up from Sports Massage & Physio if anyone did get injured.
  • The motto was 'to always run with someone at the speed of Chat'
  • Advice on Trainers/interlocking laces/different surfaces I think that the danger is when you do it on your own, you don't realise what you may be doing wrong......

OP - don't see a problem with where you run so long as there is plenty of room for everyone......

practicallyperfectinmyway · 05/10/2017 21:35

Go for it OP!! Run / sprint like the wind.

So long as you're not getting in anyone's way, what's the problem?

All those saying it's odd, go to a park or running track etc, what's wrong with the space the OP has here?

Sprinting, hopping, jumping, you're out and about exercising, good on ya!

maxrayeseth123 · 05/10/2017 21:38

PMSL Grin oh op! You have made my day, this post is hilarious..I think everyone should take up 'pavement sprinting' - I have mental images of deranged women nationwide in skin tight outfits carreering around - it's just the best idea ever and everyone should do it! Your DP's comments are so funny, sounds like a telling off you would give a naughty teenager! Grin

MaisyPops · 05/10/2017 21:42

You're fine OP.

Sometimes I think people like to mock or sneer at anyone doing fitness things/ exercise because it makes them feel better about doing nothing.

I don't get how in some people's mind it's acceptable to drone on about your latest miracle shake/5 2 diet/ moan about how yoi can't have chocolate cake on slimming world / share diet things on social media etc, but go running or cycling, or share a fitneas event you're at or talk about an event you want to challenge yourself for and suddenly you're obnoxious, boring, self obsessed etc.

I'd rather see lota of people exercising than sit through anothet conversations about the trials of finding syn free puddings on slimming world or how aloe vera juice really ramps your metabolism up.

xqwertyx · 05/10/2017 22:13

I dont know how it could be obnoxious or annoying? I dont get that, you arent hurting anyone and if anyone is annoyed by it then they must be weird, how can someone running fast annoy you when it doesnt affect you in any way? Its HIIT so i get why youve opted to do it.

Imstyledilemma · 05/10/2017 22:32

You're fine OP.

this.
People are jealous.

Imstyledilemma · 05/10/2017 22:42

Crazy to think that the women that go to Slimming World think that
sprinting and running in general is
obnoxious
attention seeking Hmm

but all their crazy dietary restrictions is normal ?

The worlds gone mad.

Imstyledilemma · 05/10/2017 22:46

Go for it OP!! Run / sprint like the wind.

Yeah!
Don't let the jealous fat unfit bastards get you down.
You are doing something positive for your health.
Which is more than they're doing.

Adarajames · 05/10/2017 23:55

God I wish I could still run, used to sprint the long distances, loved it, fecking disability stealing my life Sad /misses point of thread/

manicmij · 06/10/2017 17:57

The latest research is showing a brisk ten minute walk on a daily basis is all that's needed to keep adding in order. Where do you have such wide pavements, wider than some roads. Seems a bit unusual to carry out sprints other than on a track. Hope you don't use blocks.

Curtaintwitcher2017 · 06/10/2017 20:59

Yeah I doubt the OP is using blocks. And research can be written on just about anything you want it to.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 06/10/2017 21:11

OP ignore everyone and do what you want. I'd rather people ran on a pavement rather than drop litter, spit, vomit or puff smoke at me.

I will go for a long run early tomorrow through countryside and town but all on tarmac road or cement pavement.

I will work harder/run faster on certain segments, particularly up hills.

When I'm nearly home and well warmed up I will do several sprint hill repeats on a short street near my house.

I will look very sweaty and probably quite strange at times, but I'm not attention seeking. I'm just getting fit and enjoying getting out and challenging myself.

KnowsStuff · 07/10/2017 10:27

The only way it would be "obnoxious " is if you have extremely bad personal body odour or something else equally offensive. You are not doing anything offensive like knocking people out of the way as you run.
It's like saying it's obnoxious to exercise?! It takes self discipline and willpower to maintain any type of regular exercise routine. Well done you

haveacupoftea · 07/10/2017 10:31

He's right. It's strange. Especially if you're in full running gear sprinting up and down the street 😂

Ploppie4 · 07/10/2017 10:47

Timing is everything. Doing it when there’s few pedestrians about is great. Totally understand not catching a taxi to a track. The best bit about running is how immediate it is.

Ploppie4 · 07/10/2017 10:51

I couldn’t do what you’re doing but hats off to you. My involves styles, mud, hilly fields, isolation.

Ploppie4 · 07/10/2017 10:52

Getting out of breath is an important part of staying fit.

AuntieStella · 07/10/2017 15:26

"He's right. It's strange. Especially if you're in full running gear sprinting up and down the street"

RTFT

OP has clarified that she is doing fartlek on a wide promenade, used by many runners
