AIBU?

DP thinks my new hobby (sprinting) is obnoxious.

Recently, in the spirit of health, I have decided to start running again. I'm not a fan of long distance jogging, so have opted to do sets of 100/200m sprints. The usual pavement I do my running on is about 10+m wide, so no worries there isn't a chance of me crashing into anyone.

My issue now, is that DP has told me (more than once), that what I'm doing is obnoxious and attention seeking. Confused

AIBU to think that's complete bollocks?

Hmm, so about 25 kph on the pavement?

Obnoxious and a menace.

No different from riding a bike on the pavement at that speed.

So all you are doing is normal running with faster bits thrown in? Like about a billion people. Fartlek?

I don't see anything wrong at all in you doing this type of running.
The fact that you enjoy it is far more important than what other people think.
I think you should carry on and do whatever makes you happy.
DP should be happy that you're happy and not be such a misery guts about something you enjoy.

Ah, from your original post I just imagined you running back and forth really fast in front of your building repeatedly (possibly in a suit, in heels Grin), hence thinking it more than a little odd.

I think your H is embarrassed by it. I would be!

But yes, if you enjoy it and are not embarrassed fair enough!

That imagery is brilliant thanks now I'm chuckling at my screen in a public coffee shop looking more than a little odd!

I applaud the effort - amateur sprinter here - but am more worried about the risk of injury (to you!) if someone was to walk in front of you suddenly when you're at top speed. If you're talking about just doing a few strides it might not be so terrible.

I'm lucky enough to have a running track a short jog away so if I don't drive there it's a good warm-up run. Failing that, I do intervals in the park at 6am before it fills up with joggers. And always dynamic stretches beforehand!

I wish you all the best OP but this is one of the funniest threads I've ever read. "My New Hobby is Sprinting"

I think it's his jealousy talking, which is why the comments are designed as personal digs about your personality....they're meant to attack your self esteem.

Does he try and sabotage your life in other ways too?

What are his hobbies? Does he have any?

Why? What's 'embarrassing' about someone keeping fit?
It's not like the other half has to stand outside and watch is it?

Bodyshaming women isn't on either.....

I’d be embarrassed if my H did this outside our home: not proud of that, but know I would come over all DGrandmotherish (my grandmother scrubbed her front step daily) and worry what the neighbours would think!

Nothing to do with their body type/weigh.

Not rtft but love the idea of you sprinting a la Phoebe Bouffet from friends with your arms waving wildly Grin you should do that to piss him off even more.

You're totally fine! I think a lot of people have misinterpreted your initial post to think that you're charging up and down one street, hahahaha! I thought from the start that you were probably talking about interval training - running in repeat sprint bursts - rather than sprint training, which is a bit different. Interval training is something tons of runners do on the pavement, it's completely normal, on virtually every running training programme, and not something to be embarrassed or worked up about. It's not like you're shoving blocks down outside your local shopping mall and charging to the department store at the speed of Usain Bolt while wearing nothing but a pair of sports knickers and a bra, then screaming in joyous victory when you arrive! it does come across attention seeking to be honest. I once saw a woman bolting down a main road sprinting like hell. I burst out laughing when I saw her because she looked like a mad woman. Everyone was staring at her.
You do that kind of thing in the park, surely?

"I once saw a woman bolting down a main road sprinting like hell."

Yet plenty of men do this. Plenty.

I'd love to see this. Would be unusual and I'd wonder what you were ding but wouldn't think you attention seeking.

Where do you live? In my world I hardly ever to never see someone proper sprinting for exercise on a public pavement.. where do you live where that plenty of blokes are doing it.

Maybe the op could sprint there Grin

HeebieJeebies456 I don't think it's that. My DP just tends to be quite image conscious I suppose whereas it takes a lot for me to feel embarrassed (even way back when I was a teen). One of our few major points of contention!

guilty100 Don't forget to have a finishing ribbon set up between the doors (with a soundtrack of applause playing in the background of course) for maximum victorious effect! Grin

Your DH has a point - if you were wanting attention then this would do it.

Sprinting up and down the pavement does sound slightly wierd and a bit dangerous and could possibly make you look a little demented especially if you are wearing lycra....

Go to a park - throw down a couple of bean bags and sprint between the two. No one will bat an eye lid.

Totally fine, assuming you aren't getting in the way of people. I do sprint repeats up a hill with a house on the top, and often the people who live there are in the garden or their conservatory. Maybe after the 5th time i sprint past them they think I'm a bit odd, but I couldn't give a flying fuck.

I live in a northern city. It's quite an outdoorsy place and there are a lot of extremely good orienteers and fell runners in the city. But there are also a lot (and an increasing) number of people who are out running 10ks, halfs, marathons. But honestly, pretty much any serious runner who is intent on improving will be doing some interval training (or hill reps) where you push the body hard in bursts which are alternated with slower rests. It is one of the fastest ways of increasing your VO2 max, which improves your PB.
