... that all his friends are given £200 a week by their parents as spending money. I'm calling bullshit.

Actually, I feel like I've had the stuffing knocked out of me. I thought I was generous at about £80 a week.

So, AIBU?

£80 a week is about what we are giving DS who has just started Uni. He is in a self-catering flat, so that has to cover absolutely everything (except his rent which is paid for from his maintenance loan).

It seems like a lot for a 16 year old who is still living at home & having most of their meals provided by their parents.

Obviously. Obviously if you are on a limited income then no one expects you to fund treats for your DCs as a matter of course.

Conversely just because we can and do fund some treats for our DDs does not make them entitled, lazy brats FFS.

Yes, we fund them to a very large extent. But they also do extra chores round the home for extra allowance, and they both volunteer in the community (DofE) and play several sports for their school. So very far from lazy and I have zero tolerance for any brattish behaviour.

Good God, my GS1 gets £20 per week for his dinner money. I have found to my peril that giving him money is a disaster as he spends it on weird and wonderful, useful items like Halloween masks. He is bought what he needs, has a mobile phone and if he goes to an event he is provided with enough to cover food, drink etc or entrance fee.

It sounds like I am being less than generous here but £80 per week, well that is a part time wage to some people.

He does tell me that his friends have been bought £1,000 mobile phones. Just why?
