To say No thanks when asked for my post code at the till

drfostersbra · 03/10/2017 19:49

I'm always in a rush and I just want them to chuck my stuff in a bag and take my money, I don't want to be on a mailing list, have a store card, catalogue or emails, just fuck off!!

Each time they ask I say no thanks then they go all cats bum mouth with me for the rest of the transaction.

Joules, Jo Jo Maman and white stuff are the worst for this.

The other day I was buying my screaming baby a dribble bib in the Joules sale quickly before a music class and the woman serving told me that they were having a charity day and please could I donate in the bucket, when I said I was in a hurry and didn't have coins on me she gave me an application card so I could direct debit money or something. THEN asked for my post code and was thoroughly shirty with me when I said no.

It's so annoying!!

I refuse as well. And also I say no to them asking for my email address under the guise of sending me the receipt that way.

Doglikeafox · 03/10/2017 19:51

I find this really annoying too. Not only because I might be in a rush, but also because I find it really unnerving to give a complete stranger my postcode, in front of several other complete strangers. It's just odd and a breach of privacy imo. Some people might say 'just say no' but I think it's unfair to be put in that uncomfortable position in the first place.

icelollycraving · 03/10/2017 19:52

They have to do it. If you don't want to give it that's your choice. It's one of the soul destroying parts of retail. They shouldn't get arsey, that's pointless.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 19:52

This is the absolute best thing about having an accent. People assume you're on holiday!

May I suggest the Queen's post code... SW1A 1AA.

DesignedForLife · 03/10/2017 19:53

YANBU, I think it's really cheeky, especially when they add the line of "in case you loose your receipt", when really what they are trying to do is build up a profile of your purchases in order to market better to you in the future.

MrsEileithyia · 03/10/2017 19:53

Ugh I hate it too. There is one shop in particular that asks for my email address every time to send the receipt and it does my head in. More so because I created said email address when I was 14 and it’s an Uber long waffle of total embarrassment. It has three underscores for crying out loud.

LovelyPrep · 03/10/2017 19:55

I was asked for my postcode today in Asda and I must have looked really stupid, it took me by surprise as I haven't been asked before and I just sort of shook my head and my mouth opened and closed like a fish Blush need to rehearse my response. I don't give my email out either. Don't suppose postcode is that much of a problem but it's just a faff when you want to get in and out.

shooeghMcFee · 03/10/2017 19:55

I get asked this a lot too. I just say 'no, I don't think so'. To be fair, the sales assistant never seems to mind.

deepestdarkestperu · 03/10/2017 19:55

We have to ask. If I don't, I get pulled up practically immediately. If I don't get a certain number of registered customers over a month, I get pulled up by management. Luckily, I work somewhere with a lot of loyal customers and I'd say the vast majority are registered with us anyway, so it's rarely a problem (it backs up our guarantee and means you don't need your receipt for a return/refund or if something is faulty).

Saying that, I don't mind if people don't want to give their details. When I shop, I don't give mine out either, but please just be polite when you decline. I hate it when people get snotty or even slam stuff on the counter and walk out because they're "fed up of being asked".

If it bothers you, just say you don't want to register, or that you live abroad or something. But don't get rude with people who are just doing their job!

RosyPony · 03/10/2017 19:57

"No thank you"

Job done, I hate people and shopping at the best of times and I have a name that requires spelling slowly and lots of explaining, so just no!

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 03/10/2017 19:57

I just say "I know you have to ask me but can I say no thank you?" . They are usually understanding.

I think it "helps" that my kids are shits when out shopping- it's a mixture of shop assistants feeling sorry for me and wanting my children out of the shop asap Blush

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 03/10/2017 19:59

"Would you like your reception by email?" is the latest scam. I want to buy a tshirt and get out, not allow you to sell my personal data.

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 03/10/2017 20:00

*receipt

PickleSarnie · 03/10/2017 20:00

Joules are terrible for this. Really fecks me off. I'm not buying a house or a car or a gun. Just yet another stripey jumper. And I don't want anyone to know about my stripey addiction tbh.

CowOnTheMoon · 03/10/2017 20:00

I just say “can I just have the paper receipt please”

Gatehouse77 · 03/10/2017 20:01

I was asked for my email address in Staples (or similar). When I asked why he said for promotions, etc.
I said, no thanks.
He said I still need it for your receipt.
I said, no you don't.
I got a paper receipt.

I know they have to ask but, to be fair, I've not had any 'attitude' when refusing.

Killerqueen2244 · 03/10/2017 20:04

When I worked in a shop that did this we all really hated doing it but unfortunately your beef is with top management. They send targets and if you are consistently below them you do get hauled into the office about your under performance. It’s frustrating!!

shouldaknownbetter · 03/10/2017 20:05

I've always said 'no thank you' in a polite way and never been bothered further.

If I was to be, I'd simply say 'I'd rather not give that, thank you'

Assertiveness has never been an issue for me -I've toned down from bolshy over the years.

Fauchelevent · 03/10/2017 20:07

Please do not give a “funny” postcode. The sales assistants aren’t asking for the pleasure of asking and they’re also probably not cats bum facing for any reason other than they know they might not reach their target and/or they may take the “no” a little personally.

allegretto · 03/10/2017 20:08

I always say I live abroad andnobody questions it.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 20:09

Please do not give a “funny” postcode. Why not?

It preserves my personal information while giving the person something to input (and fucks off marketers). Job's a good 'un, surely?

deepestdarkestperu · 03/10/2017 20:12

Please do not give a “funny” postcode.

Why not?

Because we get pulled up if we record false postcodes - I would rather someone didn't give a postcode at all. We can't force people to register their details, but if you give us false information, it just screws with our stats and all you do is get the shop assistant in trouble for adding false information to the database.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/10/2017 20:15

The Queen's post code is real and how on earth would you get blamed for information that could be true?

I want to screw with the stats because I hate this kind of insidious bullshit marketing.

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 03/10/2017 20:17

Agree it's just quicker to give a fake one.
Screw their stats

Tartyflette · 03/10/2017 20:17

I don't give a false postcode, I just don't give my postcode.
