to only shampoo my hair twice a week?

isawahatonce · 03/10/2017 17:30

I have, since I can remember, always washed my hair every day or every other day with shampoo and conditioner (except while travelling or otherwise inconvenienced). However, this morning, when I came to wash my hair, I discovered that the shampoo had all been used up and not replaced from the handy toiletries drawer in the other room. Rather than get out of the shower to fetch it, I just skipped shampoo and only conditioned my hair.
I don't think my hair has ever felt nicer or been less frizzy in my entire life.
It doesn't feel dirty but I feel like it may niggle on me that I haven't washed my hair properly if I make this a regular thing. I was thinking of only shampooing twice a week, when I'm not at work, so that people will only see me when I have lovely soft not-a-complete-mess hair. Please tell me I'm not being unreasonable or gross, I'm imagining a perfect vision of the future where I'm not known as 'the one with the hair'. It'll be wonderful.

Just washed my hair and that's an hour of my life I won't get back!

I have ringletty curly hair and wash it every 4-5 days. In between that I just put gel on it and shower cap for bathing. It doesn't tend to smell but by day 4 or 5 it definitely goes less curly.

I am a bit mingling though as I'm at the gym most days (except the day after a hair wash!) and don't even wash it then...

PurplePillowCase · 03/10/2017 21:39

I rinse it every day in the shower but only use shampoo every 2-3 days.
only using conditioner makes my scalp itch...

Carolinesbeanies · 03/10/2017 21:43

Im a twice a week washer, and also there used to be quite a following on the Longhair forums of "no poo" conditioner washing only. (Its years since Ive been on but guess theyre still out there). Apart from anti cfc's or whatever it is in some shampoos, theyre great advocates of conditioner only washing.

I gather it works really well. Youre not odd Smile

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 03/10/2017 21:46

I shampoo every other day but I recently ran out of conditioner, noticed it made no difference to my hair so haven't bothered since.

MammaTJ · 03/10/2017 22:02

I wash mine once a fortnight nowadays and it is great. After a few days, I put it in a pony tail anyway, so not noticeable. Actually, I washed it yesterday and by tea time had put it in a pony tail!

gorygloria · 03/10/2017 22:12

I’d have to have my hands chppped off to achieve a once a week hair wash. Touch it very frequently so gets lank at roots. Know a few women who do once/twice a week and it always looks fresh, but they do use irons every day

helpfulperson · 03/10/2017 22:21

Wow, this thread has been a revelation
a) I didn't realise there were so many of us 'once a week' girls and
b) I didn't realise there were 'long hair forums', I feel a wasted evening on the internet coming on,

Wallywobbles · 03/10/2017 22:22

I wash my hair when I swim. Sometimes that's once a week sometimes it's 4x. Loads of conditioner and oil though. Stupidly thick long curly hair though. I dread doing it at home because it's a bloody chore.

MyfatheristheKing · 03/10/2017 22:27

I never shampoo my hair. I only use conditioner but do co wash it pretty much every day

Ollivander84 · 03/10/2017 22:28

I never use shampoo. Wash maybe every 3-4 days with conditioner only

SummerRoberts · 03/10/2017 22:30

I only wash my hair once or twice a week. The more I wash it, the greasier it gets and then I need to wash it more. It works for me and my hair never looks disgusting.

AnyFucker · 03/10/2017 22:30

Twice a week for decades here

Fluffyears · 03/10/2017 22:35

It’s a myth that every day washing is damaging. Modern shampoos are mild enough for daily washing. I have long greasy hair so it gets washed every day or it looks awful. It’s not a faff, wash dry in a towel whilst I get dressed then blast dry and brush (my hair is poker straight naturally). Twice a week I ‘reverse’ condition it.

stickygotstuck · 03/10/2017 22:47

I don't think it's shampooing often that's damaging, it's the water. Hard water dries the skin, and therefore the scalp too. Too dry = more sebum is generated.

Carolinesbeanies · 03/10/2017 22:55

Co-wash! Thats what they call it. Conditioner only washing. TY myfatheristheking. Smile

Maddiemademe · 04/10/2017 07:29

Once a week for me too. I have very white bleached hair and the only way I can keep in a somewhat good condition is too limit any products going on it.

When I stopped washing so frequently the hair feels a lot more manageable, soft and I have far fewer breakages.

Maddiemademe · 04/10/2017 07:30

**is TO even Confused

deepestdarkestperu · 04/10/2017 07:53

Everyday here - I’ve tried no-poo methods and I’ve tried co-washing or just not washing everyday and it was disgustingly greasy after day two.

It doesn’t take me long. I have shower and wash it everyday - it only takes 10 minutes. Then I let it air dry and straighten, or tie it up damp and leave it up.

Fluffyears · 04/10/2017 17:57

sticky maybe thats true asxmu hair condition is still really good after daily washing and I live in Scotland with very soft water.

KanielOutis · 04/10/2017 18:12

I only wash with conditioner. Every day though or my hair looks like a birds nest. Another curly girl. The best investment I have made is a Dyson hairdryer. Diffuse dry in about 15 minutes.

Lucisky · 04/10/2017 18:55

I have mine washed and blow dried once a week at the hairdresser. I have very dry, very thick hair, and if I wash it myself I can't style it properly and it just turns into a large haystack. When it was longer was not such a problem as I'd put it up, but now it's shorter, I can't do that. Only a hairdresser can get the silky smooth look that I crave!

PolkaDottyRose · 04/10/2017 19:00

No, you aren't being unreasonable. I have started washing my hair much less (every 3rd day), and it has massively improved the condition of it..and it hasn't felt dirty at all. I won't be going back to washing it every day.

Justturned50 · 04/10/2017 19:44

Am I right in assuming that the once a weekers have long hair? I have a very short cut which transforms to a birdsnest overnight. No other option but to wash it.

strawberrygate · 04/10/2017 19:49

I wash mine every day as otherwise it's revoltingly greasy. i do only shower once or maybe twice a week at the most though, and no, I don't smell

Funnyfarmer · 04/10/2017 23:09

@jennyonaplate. I'm cg too. Grin
Only a few months in though. I love it. Smile
