dentist and fillings

I recently moved and had to change dentist. I had my check up the other day and he was amazed that I'm 33 with no fillings.

He called in all ththe dental nurses to look at my mouth while I turned scarlet on the dentist chairBlush

Surely it's not that uncommon Confused

Anyone else footloose and filling free in their thirties?

It did make me laugh because I've recently moved from the west of Scotland to "down south" and he did mention that the awful reputation of the west of Scotland Diet made him think we lived off deep fried mars bars Grin

Not me sadly but I know people my age and older (mid 40s) with no fillings. Also in west of Scotland! X

chickenowner · 03/10/2017 13:34

I'm also 42 and with no fillings. Smile

sendcoffee · 03/10/2017 13:36

33 here.

Had my first ever filling last year.

Fuckoffee · 03/10/2017 13:40

My grandpa died in his 70s with perfect teeth. He was the talk of the hospital when he got ill just before he died. They couldn't believe it!
My dad hasn't got any fillings and neither has my oh. I've got one which I weirdly feel ashamed of around my family!

OtterlyNutty · 03/10/2017 13:41

34 & no fillings Grin

Perfectly1mperfect · 03/10/2017 13:49

My dentist said it's partly good hygiene but also genetics and medications etc. My OH has always had a sweet tooth and maybe 1 filling. I have got a couple of chronic conditions requiring medication and have definitly needed more dental work since being on them but I had a couple of fillings and a crown before that. I always brush, floss and use mouthwash so it seems unfair. Our children seem to have inherited their dads teeth genes, which is good.

Birdsgottafly · 03/10/2017 14:05

IT can be a matter of luck. My DD has had terrible problems with her Wisdom teeth, which needed dental surgery and it meant a filling to the tooth next to it. She also grinds her teeth in her sleep.

I need implants at 49. I was only heavy antibiotics from Birth and had to have my baby teeth removed.

You can't control what happens in pregnancy/aggressive treatments etc. Nor do you have any power during your childhood when your teeth are forming.

forforksakeitsaspoon · 03/10/2017 14:07

I feel like if the time ever comes to have a filling I'll be crushed Grin

I had no fillings until five years ago. I got pregnant, spent the next nine months vomiting continuously and then needed three fillings. Repeat again two years ago and now I only have four teeth without fillings. Bloody children.

Ilovewillow · 03/10/2017 14:16

My husband managed to go filling free until 2 months before he turned 40, he was not impressed!

Pebbles16 · 03/10/2017 14:17

47 and only have one (which is right in the front because I tried to remove a staple with my teeth stupid

mrsm43s · 03/10/2017 14:18

44 no fillings here.

GigglyGoo · 03/10/2017 14:30

My husband is 38, no fillings. He is the youngest of three and his siblings don't have any either. Their mother used to give them fluoride tablets when they were little. They all have good strong teeth.

Firesuit · 03/10/2017 14:35

I only recently read that you have to get the bacteria that cause decay from somewhere. Apparently you usually get them from your parents, e.g. when they kiss you. So good/bad teeth can run in families just depending on whether the bacteria are passed on.

yumscrumfatbum · 03/10/2017 14:47

44 and no fillings

strawberrygate · 03/10/2017 14:50

Had my first filling at 45. I was really upset. I did have a white one as I'd have been even more gutted with that horrible grey stuff

hazelnutlatte · 03/10/2017 14:53

36 and no fillings - surely we can't be that unusual?

forforksakeitsaspoon · 03/10/2017 15:00

hazelnut

I think we are! Particularly in the west of Scotland where I'm from. I'll probably die of a heart attack before I have a filling Wink

44 and no fillings - although I've got a feeling that I will need one next time and yes, I'm crushed too!

JennyOnAPlate · 03/10/2017 15:59

Dh is 36 and doesn’t have any. I have a few but last one was probably about 10 years ago.

Beerwench · 03/10/2017 16:15

I got to 36 with no fillings and no dental work except a crown over a damaged front tooth from an accident. In the last 4 years I've had 4 fillings and a tooth extraction, nothing has changed regarding looking after my teeth or my diet they've just started to deteriorate - age kicking in?!

Timeywimey8 · 03/10/2017 17:03

I have a friend who's the same age as me (45) and has no fillings.

I've had one filling since I was 18, and it was a tiny surface one.

I think all the others I had as a kid were part of the old NHS "drill and bill" culture. I suspect that those aged under about 35 probably avoided all that - and also had fissure sealants, which I was told I was too old to have. So I've had quite a lot of work to refill teeth I had filled as a child, and where teeth have broken up round fillings and the like.

museumum · 03/10/2017 17:20

41 and no fillings. Just had a fissure seal though as the Dentist was starting to see very very early stages of decay.
