Use by was yesterday and I forgot to put it in the freezer last night. Still looks ok, not smelt it yet. I was planning chilli tonight.
Would you serve it to dh and the dcs?

If it smelt ok then yes

19lottie82 · 02/10/2017 15:43

Yes it's fine.

TurnipCake · 02/10/2017 15:43

Yes if it passes the sniff test

anythingbuttypical · 02/10/2017 15:56

What am I sniffing for exactly? At the risk of sounding extremely blonde!

You can't always smell bacteria

theothersideoftheworld · 02/10/2017 15:58

It will be fine. I used beef last week that was 3 days out. Fed it to my dh and he's been ok 😂

Weedsnseeds1 · 02/10/2017 16:00

It'll be fine. Sniffing food is a bit of an old wife's tale. You can smell if it's"gone off" ( caused by spoilage bacteria) as it will smell unpleasant, pathogens, which make you ill) don't normally give off a smell, so you can't sniff it to see if you'll get food poisoning.
One day is fine if it was properly refrigerated,, asafety margins are built in when allocating shelf life to products.

carefreeeee · 02/10/2017 16:01

If you were going to freeze it last night then defrost and use today it won't make any difference anyway - freezing for one night won't kill any bacteria!

Cooking on the other hand kills bacteria very effectively. It will be fine

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 02/10/2017 16:14

Nope. I wouldn't chance it whatsoever.

tippz · 02/10/2017 16:16

As long as it has been in the fridge, I would use it (if I ate meat!)

What on earth is going on with the posts by @anythingbuttypical? Confused

What on earth is going on with the posts by @anythingbuttypical?

She's the OP, not a random poster.

anythingbuttypical · 02/10/2017 16:27

I am the OP 2017. As I posted, my app had some sort of meltdown and posted a further 3 times Grin. I've reported the duplicate posts.

If it smells bad, don't eat it.

If it doesn't smell bad, eat it. There might be bacteria in it, but if you cook it properly, they'll die.. so if it hasn't gone off it'll be fine.

A day is nothing anyway.

BadPolicy · 02/10/2017 16:31

If it looks ok and smells ok, I would cook it really really well and enjoy it.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 02/10/2017 16:35

I am the OP 2017.

I know, that's what I said Grin

Timeywimey8 · 02/10/2017 16:48

Yes it will be fine. I suspect the suppliers build in a safety margin of at least 3 days. I can't think that they actually say the last possible; day that the food will be safe to eat as a use-by date.

As for things like milk and yogurt, they can be ok a week after the use-by date though I do notice the milk goes off very quickly once open if it's that old.

DameXanaduBramble · 02/10/2017 16:59

There really needs to be some training about this sort of thing, people fuss way too much, they don’t understand the difference between use by, display by, best before, (not saying you don’t, OP)

Anyway, yes, of course you can use it, it’s absolutely fine if it’s been refrigerated properly.

Crimblewick · 02/10/2017 17:03

I would use it. Cooking kills bacteria anyway. It's only 24 hours out of date. It's fine.

PandorasXbox · 02/10/2017 17:07

I would use it.

Choccyhobnob · 02/10/2017 17:17

Yeah, totally fine.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 02/10/2017 17:20

It'll be fine. In fact, I did exactly the same today - mince was use by yesterday and I forgot to put it in the freezer, so I bunged it in today for use later in the week. I've done it before without any ill effects.

SpringBreak · 02/10/2017 17:20

God yes. Cook on high. My lot have had bolognaise that the cat stick its head in and snacked upon while simmered no.
