... to return my Harry Potter tickets

Dearlittleflo · 02/10/2017 15:30

A few months ago I spent an arm and a leg (and quite a lot of annoying time waiting in online queues) buying tickets to HP and the Cursed Child. The performance is next year and I was planning to surprise my (then) HP-loving children with the tickets at Christmas.

Since then, they've rather lost interest and I'm now holding over £500 of tickets. I'd quite like to see the play myself but certainly not enough to warrant spending that much.

Do I return them or hang onto them? Is the play really that great? It feels like it should be a no-brainer- it's bonkers to spend so much on something that they are not fussed about. But I can;t help thinking that this is our only chance to see it. I was so chuffed when I managed to buy them.

OP posts:

watching with interest - forked out £800 in the past round of ticket allocations to watch it next summer. Crazy amount of money but DP and DCs are harry potter obsessed...

montenana · 02/10/2017 15:34

but in your position i'd refund them. They've got to be ecstatic about it (mine are), not "meh".

ShatnersWig · 02/10/2017 15:36

Most theatres don't do refunds but will try and sell your tickets on for you for a fee. With a show like this, I don't think they'd have a problem selling them on but it's how they advertise they have some returns as everyone knows it's sold out for months in advance. You may be better trying to sell them on yourself

PetraDelphiki · 02/10/2017 15:37

are you allowed to resell/pass tickets on?

PippaPug · 02/10/2017 15:38

Will be easy to sell - people will bite your hand off for them! Me included Wink

Moanyoldcow · 02/10/2017 15:38

All I have heard about the show is it's phenomenal. I'd expect you could sell them relatively easily if you couldn't make it (subject to whatever terms and conditions are in place from the venue).

puddingpen · 02/10/2017 15:40

It was brilliant. Absolutely magical. My 'meh' about HP DP absolutely loved it...

ApplesTheHare · 02/10/2017 15:41

The show is absolutely incredible but I wouldn't bother taking dcs if you don't think they'll been interested as it's very long. There were very few children there when we went actually, I imagine due to price and duration of the performance. There was a kiosk at the theatre officially reselling tickets so perhaps the theatre would buy some of yours back?

TeenTimesTwo · 02/10/2017 15:41

I think it's hard to get too excited about something that's ages away. I got tickets in the recent round and we are going next Sept. I'm more excited than my DCs, but I know they'll get more excited when it gets closer and love it when we finally get there.

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 02/10/2017 15:43

The show is bloody amazing though, they will still love it. How old are they?

Do not try to sell them on informally yourself. They’re red hot on touting for HPATCC. Even if you resell at face value it will be a nightmare with the proof of identity requirements. Go to the website and they’ll tell you how to do it properly - there’s a small but steady flow of returns available because people having to book 6 months in advance means that some circumstances
will inevitably change.

It’s a great show, and it benefits from having good seats, but 500 quid is a lot of money so I can see why you’re tempted.

shoeaddict83 · 02/10/2017 15:47

its AMAZING!! well worth the money but thats my opinion. The show, the tricks, the things they manage to do on stage is just incredible, honestly you'll love it! My DP had never been to a west end show before this and he was blow away by it.

allertse · 02/10/2017 15:48

Are they actually completely uninterested or are they just not mad keen because the novelty has worn off? Once they've read the books/watched the films a few times, played with all the toys etc its not surprising theyve lost interest a bit but that doesn't mean that interest won't be re-kindled with some new material?

It's incredibly easy to get a refund on tickets to HP (minus a very small admin fee) as they re-sell like hot cakes, so no worries on that front if its what you decide to do.

sizeofalentil · 02/10/2017 15:50

I'm not a giant Harry Potter fan (like it well enough) but went to see this and was blown away.

There's some genuinely terrifying parts, and the whole thing was just brilliant.

If your kids have ever liked Harry Potter, they will most probably love this.

5rivers7hills · 02/10/2017 15:52

Take them, the show is meant to be super amazing

SusanTheGentle · 02/10/2017 15:54

It is absolutely excellent. Honestly I would not sell them. I am a epiloguw refusenik despite being a big HP fan so I was all ready to poo-poo it but honestly, the stage craft was phenomenal.

Oh and definitely return them through the proper channels, they will resell, but they are incredibly strict on touting sites of all kinds.

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 02/10/2017 15:57

A quick check on the website shows that if you really want to go, and you have 150 quid to spend per person, and you don’t mind going on your own, there are a smattering of returns available over the next few weeks for 60/70 quid per show (in addition to the super-premium just add money seats).

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 02/10/2017 15:58

(That advice wasn’t to the OP, obvs, but to other people who want to go)

CoolCarrie · 02/10/2017 15:59

My niece and nephew went last month, they weren't huge fans, but their mum & dad are so the tickets were a very early Christmas gift for the mums' brithday The dc are both 11 and loved it. I think you should hang on to them and wait until closer to the date as dc can be fickle.
As pp have said you won't have a problem with resale, but do it though the theatre, not any other way.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 02/10/2017 16:02

find someone else to go with if your DC don't want to go.
DH and I drew straws for who would go, with neither of us fancying it in the slightest. DH come back raving about it.

MyWhatICallNameChange · 02/10/2017 16:05

I'll let you know what it's like next month. GrinGrinGrinGrinGrin

I'm so excited! And luckily my kids are still too, we've been waiting over a year since I bought the tickets. Unfortunately my youngest has since got into HP and I didn't buy tickets for him!

DemonBaby · 02/10/2017 16:25

Having seen it already, I'd sell them.

I'm a total hardcore potterhead and I was very very disappointed.

CoolCarrie · 02/10/2017 16:26

MyWhat, call the theatre and tell them what's happened re ticket for youngest, they should be able to help out with another ticket. I once measured an aisle seat in the theatre I worked it to help someone who had a broken leg and needed loads of space!
