... to return my Harry Potter tickets

A few months ago I spent an arm and a leg (and quite a lot of annoying time waiting in online queues) buying tickets to HP and the Cursed Child. The performance is next year and I was planning to surprise my (then) HP-loving children with the tickets at Christmas.

Since then, they've rather lost interest and I'm now holding over £500 of tickets. I'd quite like to see the play myself but certainly not enough to warrant spending that much.

Do I return them or hang onto them? Is the play really that great? It feels like it should be a no-brainer- it's bonkers to spend so much on something that they are not fussed about. But I can;t help thinking that this is our only chance to see it. I was so chuffed when I managed to buy them.

I haven't been but I'm sure they will enjoy it but I wouldn't give the tickets for Christmas because you won't get the reaction you were expecting as they will probably wish they had something else. Just look upon it as a family outing.

It's so worth it!! Even for the most lukewarm hp fans it's amazing

Loopytiles · 02/10/2017 16:29

I've heard "meh" reviews from several colleagues and disliked the script/plot to I would sell them through the correct channels.

Brittbugs80 · 02/10/2017 16:30

Don't sell!

I'm desperate to see it. Even the outside of the theatre looked amazing and I took pictures of that.

It might be one of those things they can't get excited about till nearer the time. I've had tickets for Matilda since June and we don't get till July next year as it sold out and I'm not excited yet!

The show is meant to be amazing in terms of acting, special effects etc but having read the play I was extremely disappointed. It's a ridiculous storyline that disregards some of the basic wizarding 'rules' that Rowling wrote into the novels, the characters are different and act in a way that I couldn't unite with the characters I love. Rowling didn't even write it. She should have left it at the novels.

Having said that I think your DC would still love to see it, and it's not something you can just buy on a whim again! So I would think long and hard.

I speak as a hardcore fan - it seems only the hardcore fans are disappointed, most others seem to love it!

soupforbrains · 02/10/2017 16:39

I'm a total Potterhead and I've seen it three times

I ADORED it. It's a fantastic production and as PP said the effects and staging are incredible. It's absolutely worth seeing and if you can I would suggest perhaps you find a friend to go with you and keep your own ticket and your friend buy theirs from you?

£500 is a LOT of money (my tickets weren't nearly that much) so I can completely understand wanting to return them. If your kids aren't fussed any more then I would say it's too much money to just go for the sake of it... (even though it's totally brilliant)

WickedLazy · 02/10/2017 16:43

I bought the screenplay, which I can read again and again, wouldn't pay that for tickets for anything!

Like the films. Most hardcore hardcore fans are Hmm about the films too I think.

1900LB · 02/10/2017 16:50

@DemonBaby - yes, I dislike the films too. I like to watch them, but have to completely separate them from the novels in my mind as I just compare too much Blush

Apologies for coming across a tad crazy!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 02/10/2017 16:51

Don't get rid! I feel like once you've got tickets that's your only chance to see it!! I'm desperate to see it and seem to spend half my life queueing online for them! Don't get rid!!

millifiori · 02/10/2017 16:56

I'd hold onto them for now. My DC loved HP. Then went 'meh'. Then went to HP World and adored it. Then lost all interest. Then begged and begged for tickets to that show (not got any yet.) I was surprised. But they really did want them, ahveing lost interest so many times then recaptured it. Kids go off and on HP. It's pretty timeless, classic stuff for all ages, so it's not as though they've outgrown it, iyswim.

MrsEricBana · 02/10/2017 16:59

Oh definitely keep. My friend is married to a theatre producer and sees everything. She said it was best thing she'd ever seen and person they took hasn't read any HP or seen the films and LOVED it. Enjoy!

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 02/10/2017 17:03

There are definitely individual seats available over the next couple of weeks Lego. Hit the website and check each date individually (the ones I found were for pairs of performances) until you find the slightly less insanely priced ones.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 02/10/2017 17:14

Calman unfortunately my mum may never forgive me if I go without her otherwise they'd be perfect!! I've tried for the Friday forty so so many times and last time they released some, I was number 6 in the queue and the site crashed and kicked me off

Won't lie...I cried!!

ShoesHaveSouls · 02/10/2017 17:27

It's fantastic, OP. Well worth seeing even if you're not a particular HP fanatic.

DemonBaby · 02/10/2017 17:42

Same!!!!! 😳

Hassled · 02/10/2017 17:45

From what I've read/heard about how good it is, even if your kids are a bit underwhelmed at Christmas, they'll be overwhelmed when they actually get to see the play. I'd hang on to them and take DCs as planned.

CandyMelts · 02/10/2017 17:48

It's freaking magical, you must go OP!

homeworkinghubbard · 02/10/2017 17:51

I was in the same position - £500 of tickets when I wasn't fussed and could do with the cash. Ended up going as I just never got round to flogging them, and it was INCREDIBLE. Still get goosebumps whenever I think about it. Just the most amazing production and effects. If you can afford to not sell them, I think this is one of those times where the experience is much greater than the £££.

TheMadGardener · 02/10/2017 17:52

I was unable to go because of our house move clashing. I emailed Nimax about 2 weeks beforehand and they gave me a full refund with no quibbles as they knew they could easily resell the tickets. Potter head friends have told me it wasn't that great anyway...
