Why the hell did i agree to petsit this cat??

So I've been seeing this chap for a few months, and he's due to go abroad for work this week for about a month. I agreed to petsit his cat as the cattery let him down and he's a bit stuck (we already have two but they're very friendly to other cats so thought it would be fine and I'd keep them separated for a while).

Cat came here Friday so have it in the kitchen with litter tray and I've never known a cat shit so much (normal poos) and the smell is unreal! I've had lots of cats but dear god never experienced this. Ah well can't be helped and cat send perfectly happy and friendly. Unfortunately One of my cats has disappeared since Saturday morning so I'm worried his nose has been put out of joint :-(

Anyway, when my chap brought the cat round all that came with was a third of a bag of Tesco value cat litter (I've already gone out and bought decent odour absorbing litter as the smell is so bad!) and NO food at all.

If it were me I'd have brought vast supplies with the cat. Last week i asked if he was up to date with flea treatment, i was told 'he's fine, no fleas' so i asked when was he last treated to be told a month ago so i said he was due another in that case. I was adamant about this after a previous flea infestation so I'm religious about trading my cats and have a flea free house. Anyway, he's ordered treatments to be delivered here but he clearly thought i was going overboard.

To top it off cat shat the carrier when he brought him over, when he phoned me last night i asked if the carrier was still outside, when he said it was i said 'well I'm not dealing with it' to which he replied 'oh just leave it outside till i get back and the rain will wash it'. I was at work and shattered and busy so didn't really register enough to respond.

I don't even want to continue seeing this guy, I've been a bit unsure for a while and after a crap shag saturday night and realising I'm not going to miss him at all when he's away i know there's no future but he jets off today so I'm going to deal with it when he gets back i guess.

I've just got to suck up having the cat as it's too late to do anything but WIBU to tell him I don't know what planet he's on that he thought it was ok to leave a shitty carrier in my back garden for a month and not leaving any supplies and that he's taking the piss?

I'm so cross with myself for agreeing to this!!

The cats are all obviously distressed. Could you take the visiting cat back home and just go round to feed it each day?

SparklyMagpie · 02/10/2017 10:02

His cat not his fat

Whenwillitgeteasier · 02/10/2017 10:04

I'm going to speak to him when he comes and tell him he'll need to give me money for cat food and litter. I can't back out of having the cat now and he doesn't have anyone else but I'm going to shut him in spare bedroom with food and litter so hopefully mine will come home. I guess I'd better tell him if mine doesn't come home soon i will have to arrange for him to go to a cattery which he'll have to pay for.

I've got wormer here so I'll do that today.

I do agree... i have brought this on myself!!

is he close enough that you could pop over and feed it every day at his instead?

Not that you should have to, but you did agree to catsit and its quite short notice to change your mind

ifonly4 · 02/10/2017 10:08

I guess the poor cat can't help having smelly poos. Most people adore their cats and would have sent with them a full week of supplies to ensure they were settled if nothing else. He's taking the piss and obviously not the one for you, so get the money for the cat food & litter and dump him.

myusernamewastaken · 02/10/2017 10:13

I looked after a friends cat last December when she went on holiday for 3 weeks...ive still got her...they didnt want her back and i fell in love with her so shes mine now.

Vikingcat86 · 02/10/2017 10:14

Sounds like you've bagged yourself a keeper there! Wink

LolaTheDarkdestroyer · 02/10/2017 10:16

Give him the cat back ffs, tell him it's not going to work neither are you and him, you are probably hating on the cat a but because you e gone off the owner, but he is taking the royal tbf.

Tesco value cat litter? Wtf that would have been a dealer breaker for me.

Ellie56 · 02/10/2017 10:18

Tesco value cat litter
Ewww

yorkshireyummymummy · 02/10/2017 10:18

CF ALERT,!!
I would tell him if your cat is not home in two days you are taking his to a cattery so you need him to leave you some money for that in case it happens. You also need him to clean the carrying case thingy before he goes. OR you could tell him you will feed his cat at his house. But no way would I look after it for a MONTH. That's beyond cheeky. Tell him he is binned after you have the money in you hand. He sounds awful , not suprised you are binning Him! Good luck!

AlternativeTentacle · 02/10/2017 10:19

I guess I'd better tell him if mine doesn't come home soon i will have to arrange for him to go to a cattery which he'll have to pay for.

Just tell him that anyway. Why are you letting this be your problem?

AnnieAnoniMouse · 02/10/2017 10:19

You haven't got long before he gets there, but I'd find a nice cattery that has space, book it & get him to pay for it over the phone, plus any costs for food/shots etc. I'd take the cat for him & to the vet first if nescessary (he can pre pay) but that would be it.

I'd dump his arse today, face to face, before he goes. It's a MONTH, not a week, you need to start getting on with your own life not waiting for him to come back.

LizB62A · 02/10/2017 10:22

The stink could be caused by whatever food he's been giving it...

cherrycola2004 · 02/10/2017 10:22

get his card details and get the cat booked into a cattery. be better for the cat, you and your cats. he can then pick the cat up when he's back and that's that.

GladAllOver · 02/10/2017 10:24

LTC! :)

DingDongDenny · 02/10/2017 10:27

I agree - but don't say you might book the cat into a cattery, say you will be booking it in once you find one that's available. After all it was meant to be going to a cattery anyway. Unless he thought he would save himself some money...

GabsAlot · 02/10/2017 10:29

you wont get in a cattery unless the cat as had its yearly vacs and wormed-and u hav to prove it

so he might b lieing about cattery letting him down unless this was the reason

hope your cat comes home soon

Whenwillitgeteasier · 02/10/2017 10:30

I know loads of you are saying to tell him to take his cat away but i honestly can't do that when he's on the way to the airport, i will tell him cattery will have to be sorted if mine doesn't come back in a couple of days.

This has at least made dumping him far far easier i suppose. I'm going to see how conversation goes when he comes round. I have told him to take away carrier, it's going on the fucking bin otherwise.

PovertyPain · 02/10/2017 10:30

Get off mumsnet and start phoning around cat sitters and catteries, so you can give him the details ,when he arrives. Get the money from him up front, so you're not stuck with the bill. I don't believe a cattery has let him down. I think you've connected with a potential cock lodger.

Check pet sitter's both in your area and his. Some pet sitters do pop ins, which is better for the cat. They will check on it, feed it and change it's tray. If he has no boundaries in your home then he should be happy to give you his address and key, if he's rushing to the airport. Realistically you can't simply hand him the poor cat, as you don't know what he'll do with it.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 02/10/2017 10:36

Why won't you book the vets/cattery now & get him to pay for them over the phone, you can take the cat there later AFTER he's cleaned it's carrier out. He CAN do that before going to the airport.

Think of your cats if not yourself.

FizzyGreenWater · 02/10/2017 10:38

No you can't dump the cat but tell him firmly- it's going in a cattery. Now, before your poor cat takes off for pastures new.

Whenwillitgeteasier · 02/10/2017 10:38

I'm phoning and messaging catteries now! There's not much in my area unfortunately but one an hour away might be a possibility

OP posts:
Branleuse · 02/10/2017 10:40

id definitely tell him that he needs to hose down the cat carrier before he goes

Ontheboardwalk · 02/10/2017 10:40

Are you able to feed the cat at his addresses? Or as other people have said, get a cat sitter at his address? Less stresssful for the cat and no doubt cheaper

GladAllOver · 02/10/2017 10:51

As pp said above, you will need vaccination certificates before the cattery will take it.
