To hate roundabouts

This morning, once again cut up on a roundabout by a wanker going in the right hand lane when going straight ahead. I had to slam on breaks and the horn. I know it's not a big thing but I dread coming up to them now.

Maybe pay for a couple of lessons, to give you a bit more confidence? There are absolute idiots on the road but if you know how to handle it you'll find it much easier.

honeysucklejasmine · 01/10/2017 21:46

I assume the roundabout markings don't allow that? Cause that's not necessarily wrong.

But YANBU, poor lane discipline on roundabouts is very annoying.

FannyWisdom · 01/10/2017 21:46

Are there any road markings on the lanes of the round about and does the straight ahead exit have two lanes or one?

PatMullins · 01/10/2017 21:48

So you were in the left lane going straight ahead? Not taking the first exit?

cardibach · 01/10/2017 21:48

Depending on the roads entering and exiting the roundabout, right hand lane for straight on may well be ok.

imjusthereforasec · 01/10/2017 21:49

It's a standard four exit roundabout, two lanes coming to the junction, no road markings, so left hand lane for turning left and straight over and right hand for turning right.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 01/10/2017 21:49

I agree, might well be ok.

Fruitcocktail6 · 01/10/2017 21:50

That's not always wrong though. I don't understand what happened exactly?

Fruitcocktail6 · 01/10/2017 21:50

Were there two lanes coming off the roundabout straight ahead?

Becca83 · 01/10/2017 21:51

If there are 2 lanes to exit the roundabout, I don't see the problem?!?

PurplePillowCase · 01/10/2017 21:53

yanbu
they cause a lot of confusion and don't solve any traffic flow issues.
my theory is they were invented by insurance companies...

LilaoftheGreenwood · 01/10/2017 21:53

so left hand lane for turning left and straight over and right hand for turning right.

Incorrect, I think.

PatMullins · 01/10/2017 21:54

Yeah OP I think you may be wrong on this one

FannyWisdom · 01/10/2017 21:54

It's not wrong, if the lane is right turn only they paint a big arrow showing right.

Have some refresher lessons OP.

ghostyslovesheets · 01/10/2017 21:56

I don't think OP is wrong - 4 exits so left would be left and straight and right 3rd and 4th

unless is specifically says both lanes for straight on?

FannyWisdom · 01/10/2017 21:58

Roundabouts are ace for improving traffic.
If people know how to use them.
Not so good for brits who like to queue and have ' no, you hang up' moments at the give ways.

Becca83 · 01/10/2017 21:58

We need a diagram from the op!

LilaoftheGreenwood · 01/10/2017 22:01

Rule 186 - seems to be one of those "do what seems logical" things?

www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/using-the-road-159-to-203

Ghostys nobody's using the fourth exit on a four-way roundabout though are they, unless lost, which undermines the sharing out principle.

FannyWisdom · 01/10/2017 22:01

Depends on the exit lane and how busy the left turn is Ghosty unless the lane is marked otherwise you can use both to go ahead.

happy2bhomely · 01/10/2017 22:02

I've been driving for only 18 months or so. Something I have learned very quickly is that it makes no difference where anyone ''should' be or 'should' be doing. You can't control how someone else is driving. It doesn't matter who is right if you end up dead.

So, my advice for roundabouts is to look at the sign on approach and any lane markings, pick a lane and stick to it, and then MIRRORS, MIRRORS, MIRRORS.

And my advice to everyone is to get a dashcam so that you can prove that you were where you are meant to be in the event of an accident and claim.

imjusthereforasec · 01/10/2017 22:02

Apologies / picture for clarity.

Left lane goes left and straight on, right lane goes right or all the way round. This is how to use a roundabout unless road markings indicate otherwise.

Escapepeas · 01/10/2017 22:03

No, we don't need a diagram. That is, unless you're unable to understand a single sentence which is very clear.

cheminotte · 01/10/2017 22:03

I thought left was for first exit and second exit, right for second (if 2 lanes on exit) and third?

MyBrilliantDisguise · 01/10/2017 22:07

OP, if there are two lanes coming up, usually the left lane is for the first left turn, and the right lane is for either straight ahead or a right turn.
