To hate roundabouts

This morning, once again cut up on a roundabout by a wanker going in the right hand lane when going straight ahead. I had to slam on breaks and the horn. I know it's not a big thing but I dread coming up to them now.

I approach this roundabout assuming that someone will go in the righthand lane and cut in, I am on the look out and drive accordingly. This morning the person was on my bumper for the previous mile so it was bloody annoying (even though you know it is probably going to happen)

And, LimitedPeriod, yes I can hate this roundabout and still be a good driver knowing full well that there are shitty drivers who don't follow the rules and make it bloody annoying for those that do!!!

Rule 186
Signals and position.
When taking the first exit to the left, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal left and approach in the left-hand lane

keep to the left on the roundabout and continue signalling left to leave.
When taking an exit to the right or going full circle, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
signal right and approach in the right-hand lane

keep to the right on the roundabout until you need to change lanes to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.
When taking any intermediate exit, unless signs or markings indicate otherwise
select the appropriate lane on approach to the roundabout

you should not normally need to signal on approach
stay in this lane until you need to alter course to exit the roundabout
signal left after you have passed the exit before the one you want.
When there are more than three lanes at the entrance to a roundabout, use the most appropriate lane on approach and through it.

From the link.
Straight ahead is intermediate.

I also used to drive somewhere that had a tidal flow system on a flyover. After a number of nasty accidents caused by people who couldn't understand it they made it one way.

They are the people who want signposts on roundabouts because they don't understand them. I suppose that's good because I don't want to be killed by them

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 01/10/2017 22:48

It’s scary how many people think that the lane you get in depends on the number of exits rather than using ‘the clock’ rule.

SixFeetUnder · 01/10/2017 23:23

It's scary how many people think the Highway Code includes a 'clock' rule Hmm

Left lane is for first two turnings unless otherwise indicated i.e. On the road markings

Njordsgrrrl · 01/10/2017 23:27

This is why I want to move to NW Scotland where OH lives and there are NO roundabouts you only have to watch out for deer..

limitedperiodonly · 01/10/2017 23:46

It's scary how many people cite the Highway Code as opposed to being able to drive

SpikeGilesSandwich · 02/10/2017 00:02

Disappointed this is about driving, I was hoping I wasn't the only one who had gone a bit fast on the roundabout in the park and made herself feel sick. Blush

The magic roundabout is ridiculously easy if you know where you are going.

I love roundabouts. Means I don’t have to wait if nothing is coming!

You'd think so. A newly renovated roundabout here has traffic lights that operate 24/7. Confused

DontOpenDeadInside · 02/10/2017 07:30

We have one exactly the same round here. But, people use the left lane to go to the 3rd exit. Been cut up loads of times (I can forgive bus drivers as they need the room to turn) The council have painted loads of little dots on a lot of round abouts here, yet still people show no lane dicipline, it's scary.

Years ago I used to use the Hanger Lane Gyratory System in west London which was famous for being very busy. One Monday morning they unveiled their new traffic light system to assist those idiots who can't decide when to go on roundabouts. The queue was backed up for about two miles. It continued for months. It increased my drive to work from 90 minutes to two hours- sometimes more. Thankfully I don't live there any more.

Links have already been posted showing the clock rule from the .gov website. The number of exits on a roundabout is irrelevant to which lane you’re in.
