To wonder who watches / reads adverts?

Just that really. I have a friend who works in advertising and she says business is tough right now. Are people getting sick of being bombarded with messages and does anyone actually bother? Personally I fast forward on adverts on my recorded sky programmes, I shut down stories on instagram when a promoted video comes on. I don't buy magazines only digital because I dislike the pages and pages of adverts and leaflets shoved inside. I also think most adverts on tv are a bit rubbish / cringe. Who watches and doesn't rapidlg scroll through the paid promotional content?!

I don't. I hate hate hate them. Always have. One of the major bonuses in the rise of box sets/Netflix is that I can dodge that crap.

PlummyBrummy · 01/10/2017 18:08

I also hate the insinuation that we should watch them because that's how our programmes are paid for.

Userlavender · 01/10/2017 18:11

@plummy i completely agree - i just find it so strange how the industry keeps going because i'm fairly sure most people can't stand them and switch off / over. Love netflix also for same reason!

I mostly listen to the radio and you can't escape the bloody things!

(I googled the money supermarket Dirty Dancing one though Grin)

NymanPerkins · 01/10/2017 18:18

And yet, in a month or so loads of people will be all soppy over the Christmas John Lewis ad.

Userlavender · 01/10/2017 18:47

@putthebunny this is exactly why i don't listen to the radio i just can't anymore 😷

I'm also quite surprised how the advertising industry manages to function and survive, let alone still be hugely profitable...

internet - adblocker software
TV - Only ever watch recorded stuff so I can ffwd through the adverts
junk mail - Straight in to the recycling
Commercial radio stations - Never listen to them!

This is me, 100%

These threads are always tiring. People always claim they 'never see' ads and 'aren't influenced by them' but that's clearly bullshit as brands rule the world. Just being on this very page I can see 2 ads. You're not avoiding them and you're not 'clever' by doing so!

PeterBlue · 01/10/2017 19:43

Yes, you can see them Should but are you taking them in? Can you say what they are advertising, or are they just little squares on the screen with odd patterns in then that pass straight by you?

I agree with you OP.

showergel1 · 01/10/2017 19:45

I like adverts. I don't like the autoplay ones in Facebook but I love good tv ones. Current favourite is the one for hiring a BMW where the parents don't care their daughter is joining a cult.

I also enjoy the new thomson to tui advert, i love keeley hawes and thought the 'we crossed the t's, dotted the i's and put u in the middle' was clever.

There's adverts everywhere even if you try to avoid them. I don't think they influence my buying choices (not hiring a BMW anytime soon) but they probably are in some way. I'm okay with that.

NevilleBennett · 01/10/2017 19:46

I find some adverts are actually useful. A few years ago, I was experiencing awful IBS stomach cramps. I was watching TV and an advert came on where a woman said "are you experiencing stomach cramps?" and I was. Then she said "does it feel like and she was right again. Then she said" and traditional painkillers don't help" and I instantly ran to the pharmacy and found the magical magical medicine of Buscopan

SinglePringle · 01/10/2017 19:46

I like telly adverts. They're often clever. Hate radio ads though.

Sparklemummyx0x0x · 01/10/2017 19:51

I try to avoid ads. Watch everything recorded. Do listen to radio in the car but switch over when news, ads come on. Don't really pay attention to the ads on websites either, doesn't make me want to click on them

You can't completely avoid them of course and they have their purpose, everybody knows the comparison insurance companies etc and no adverts, no business......

I don't fall for the celeb promoted items though....not going to buy a shampoo because Cheryl states it's so fabulous for hers, when the only reason she uses it is because she's paid millions.

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 01/10/2017 19:53

My 5yo does. He is enthusiastic enough about adverts to compensate for the 60m of us who pay no attention and truly do not give a fuck. He has a cleaning product recommendation for every occasion and hotel trivago gets a gratuitous mention at least twice a week.

specialsubject · 01/10/2017 19:54

I can see the ads here, but they are too small to read and I honestly don't register them. Although I see they are now fixed so you can't scroll them off the screen!

No radio reception in the house. Dont listen in the car due to too much jabber. Ad blocker on my laptop, ad silencer on Spotify. Never watch commercial TV live, don't buy magazines, ignore newspaper ads, don't live anywhere that they put up posters. And firmly convinced that if it gets advertised, it is crap by definition.

bookwormnerd · 01/10/2017 19:57

My kids Grin ds loves the pj mask one despite owning alot of the stuff and the ella kitchen there was a little a little turtle advert has him in stitches. Dd loves toy ones so they love a bit of advertising and dont want to skip them. They dont tend to beg for stuff off them though. I dont tend to take a great deal of notice but then I tend to download off catchup if watch anything anyway

Shouldnotwouldnot · 01/10/2017 20:02

peterblue you need to see a brands name on an ad for 1 second online for it to have a top of mind recall effect. I work in the industry and there's been extensive research done on this. Almost everything you take in from an ad happens in the first 3 seconds. Ads are optimised to this.

Advertisers don't generally want people to click on the ads unless they're retailers. If I want you to buy Cheerios why do I want you to click? Where would I take you to? I just want you to choose Cheerios over Frosties next time you're in the cereal aisle. And you're more likely to do that if an ad has primed you. And that often doesn't happen consciously, though obviously sometimes it does.

JustPutSomeGlitterOnIt · 01/10/2017 20:04

ME! I love ads! All the little details that make you wonder how they're trying to adapt their public image.

My dad works in adving, and I've grown up with him raving at the dinner table about this or that new advert.

We have a running conversation on watsapp about new ones we've spotted and what they might mean for the company.
And when he visits, we go to the pub and drone on about our favourites.

Honestly, reading this now, everyone must hate us.

I LOVE adverts!

GhostsToMonsoon · 01/10/2017 20:31

I always fast forward through ads on TV. I don't listen to commercial radio.
I admit I have bought some things that came up as sponsored posts on my Facebook feed.

specialsubject · 02/10/2017 09:31

Sounds like we are in 'the space merchants'

If the research is done via online polls, be aware that we are all doing whatever takes least time. I've had surveys where I'm asked to watch a long video and comment afterwards. How many actually watch it?

There's a flicky ad at the top of this page. I'm ignoring it.

insancerre · 02/10/2017 09:35

I hate adverts
I watch most if them open mouthed incredulous at the fact that someone actually merits it and people agreed it was good then other people made it
The PPI one immediately springs to mind, with the robot head
It makes me cringe

PlummyBrummy · 02/10/2017 12:29

It's precisely this kind of sly subliminal stuff that has me raging. And you can hardly claim that it's 'bullshit' to say we're uninfluenced by them then saying that we can't avoid them because they're pasted everywhere and psychologically calculated to have the most effect on us. For this reason I avoid them as much as I can and don't choose brands purely for the packaging or crappy advert. They have to actually work or do what they say they do too.

Shouldnotwouldnot · 02/10/2017 18:20

They do work though. Brands spend millions and millions on advertising and therefore every penny spent is scrutinised intensely to see what's working and what's not. And no this isn't done via an online poll (!) but via econometric statistical analysis of spend versus sales etc. The attention studies I mentioned were largely done via eye tracking studies.

Insancerre I'd rather say that ad has done its job! All PPI ads want you to do is notice them over the millions of others. Do you not think the crap-ness that made you notice it might well be the point...

I never understand why people get so exercised over ads. You still have free will you know. Ads mostly just allow you to get The TV and magazine content you want and websites you use all day, like this one, for free.
