To ask for help with size 3 nappies

I know this isn't strictly an AIBU but am posting here for traffic.

Need some advice from those of you who have used a range of size 3 nappies.

My 12 week old has just moved up to size 3 nappies and I'm having a nightmare with leaks- nappies aren't lasting longer than 3 hours without soaking wet/through clothes. In size 1&2 we got on great with Tesco Loves Baby brand (we tried Aldi and Asda in 1&2 and found they leaked and weren't the right shape for him).

Now he's in size 3 I've tried both of the Tesco- Superfit (purple) and Ultradry (green). Both leak. The Superfit is particularly thin. Was recommended the Boots size 3 Superdry by a family member- got those this morning and they are almost identical to the Tesco Superfit- very thin and not very absorbent.

Have accepted I may have to bite the bullet and buy Pampers- but can't figure out which would be better, the Premium Protection, BabyDry or ActiveFit. What's the difference? The website isn't very clear!

Advice would be very much appreciated!

All impartial tests (Which etc) ways give Aldi and Lidl as the best ones, so I'd suggest trying them again before going to Pampers. Plus they're much cheaper, so yet another reason to try them first.

I have a ~16lb baby boy, coming up to 4 months. We use cloth in the dY but a disposable in size 3 overnight, never change it so he wears it 7.30-7.30 approx, ie 12 hours! And Naty works fine for us. They're pricey, bit if you're prepared to shell out for Pampers I don't think they're more? And better for environment [halo emoticon]

Orangebird69 · 01/10/2017 18:22

he fed, not headed.... or try sizing up? But unless your baby is most gloriously chubby, size 4 seems pretty big for 3 months!

newmumFeb17 · 01/10/2017 18:24

I've tried pretty much all of them, including Pampers, and found Aldi the best by far. Pampers actually gave my DD quite a nasty rash!

Socksey · 01/10/2017 18:25

I wasn't in the UK when DS was that age but found a useful rule .... Papers for a girl and Huggies for a boy.... had very few problems after.... even if using budget ones.... find the closest... no budget disposables where I was living...

HeyRoly · 01/10/2017 18:28

Are you sure they aren't too big? Size 3 at only 12 weeks seems excessive.

Definitely don't go up to size 4. My son (who is not petite by any means) was wearing those when he turned two.

SilverAndCold · 01/10/2017 18:35

Ok so have been suggested to size up and down!

Size 2 is 100% too small. Weight guide is 6-13lbs. Leaves red marks on legs and tabs very far apart on waist.

He is just over 13lbs- is on 50th centile so am pretty certain he is not big or small for 12 weeks- so am surprised that size 3 is considered 'excessive'! Weight guide is 11-20lbs.

Size 4 would drown him- weight guide for those is 17-35lb.

How about putting a disposable nappy liner in the nappy for extra absorbency?

Creatureofthenight · 01/10/2017 18:41

My DD seems to do a lot of wees. We use Sainsbury's own brand and haven't had any leaks ( she's 3 months and a bit over 13lb).

ambereeree · 01/10/2017 18:43

Sometimes you have to size up on baby length as well. My DD is tall ao I always sized up above her weight group.

DoesHeWantToOrNot · 01/10/2017 18:43

I used babydry in size 3. We've just went up to the 4s. And she had 1 leak the whole time she was in them. It was when she hadn't pooped for a while and I think it was just the sheer volume of it when she did go that caused a leak.

HeyRoly · 01/10/2017 18:44

Maybe size 3 isn't excessive then! It's been a while since my youngest was that little, so I really can't remember how quickly my children sized up in nappies.

SonicBoomBoom · 01/10/2017 18:46

I use premium protection in the "too big" size up for nighttime, and either Baby Dry or Premium Protection (depending on deals) in the correct size for the day. I find premium protection thicker.

He was probably in the size 4s from about your DS's weight (maybe a bit more) at night. I've only just put him into 4s daytime now and he's 18lb.

SilverAndCold · 01/10/2017 18:47

So is the general consensus Pampers Baby Dry is more absorbant than the Pampers Premium?

Seems like 3 is probably fine size wise- he's very average length and build.

My dd tried practically all brands & found Lidl the best for fit & no leaks.
Sainsbury's/Tesco gave dgd a rash & Aldi leaked a lot, pampers good but expensive compared to Lidl

DoesHeWantToOrNot · 01/10/2017 18:50

Make sure you shop around though for pampers. When we went up to the 4s asda were doing 120 for £10 then we found 116 on a website for £9.98. So 236 nappies for just under £20. That'll last a good wee while.

kiwiblue · 01/10/2017 18:51

We also use pampers baby dry overnight and premium protection during the day. The premium protection are softer and have the wetness indicator. They're a better nappy I think (so feel nicer for the baby) and cost more than baby dry. The website recommended the baby dry for overnight though and we've found this a good solution.

dontcallmelen · 01/10/2017 18:52

Forgot to mention dgd just gone in size 4 Lidl nappies, she weighs about 23llb but she is eighteen months old & quite small for her age.

Rarotonga · 01/10/2017 18:53

OP They do have a size 3+ on the Mothercare website.

www.mothercare.com/items-for-baby/pampers-baby-dry-midi-plus-size-3-nappies-47-pack--11-22lbs5-10kg/766643.html

I wasn't aware of the plus for extra absorbancy when ds was in size 3 so haven't really looked for them in shops or online in that size, so am unsure where else you can get them.

With the premium protection, they were great in the day but were leaking at night. They are slightly less expensive than baby dry per nappy so that's why we stuck with them during the day.

We also use a reuseable outer bit of the nappy over the top as I read somewhere that could help contain the wee. It seems to be helping but some nights we get some leakage so not perfect.

MujosMama · 01/10/2017 19:00

I would say you're definitely using the right size OP, my 15 week old is in size 3s and has been for a couple of weeks, that's consistent with others in my group who have babies the same age

Different brands fit different shapes bums I think! We have a problem with morrrisons and Tesco nappies leaking at night but not with sainsburys or pampers premium (which I get when they are 2 for 1 in boots which seems to happen a lot takes them down to the same price per nappy as Asda!). But my son is long and skinny, I know my friend whose baby was much chubbier did not get on with any brand except asdas

SilverAndCold · 01/10/2017 19:03

just looked at the mothercare link for 3+ is out of stock!

For those of you who have used both the Premium and the Baby Dry- is the Baby Dry thicker/ and able to hold more liquid than the Premium then?

greendale17 · 01/10/2017 19:05

Another vote for Pampers Premium Protection here. Never leaked

Mittens92 · 01/10/2017 19:06

Aldi are the best nappies I have used. Also use Lidl as well with no problems

Mittens92 · 01/10/2017 19:06

Not I, my son I mean 😆

Hatstand · 01/10/2017 19:09

We never got on with any size 3s and skipped ahead to 4+ a few weeks ago. DD is 14lb.

Kpo58 · 01/10/2017 19:20

I found that the Waitrose own brand nappies where the only brand at that stage which meant I didn't have to keep changing my DD's sheets during the night and in the morning.
