AIBU to serve sweetcorn with sausage and mash? My 3yr old dd has suddenly decided that peas are the work of the devil and I'm making mini toad in the hole castles (individual yorkies filled with mash and sausages covered in gravy and peas. Usually). My head says serve sweetcorn instead of peas but my heart says it's really wrong. Thoughts, oh wise ones?

Toad in the hole castles Grin

She's feeding a three year-old, not trying to win Masterchef.

Apart from one twatty comment, this may be the only sensible MN food thread I've ever seen!

Sweetcorn and mash is nice. I'd make a mash barrier between the sweetcorn and gravy, but I'm weird in general about mixing foods.

I am with the “if they eat it who cares if it’s an ‘odd’ combination” school of thought.

I don’t think it is a particularly odd combination anyway though

Gilead · 01/10/2017 14:01

We had toad in the hole last night, with broccoli, sweetcorn and gravy.

Pacificplaza · 01/10/2017 14:04

It should be beans I think

Mulberry72 · 01/10/2017 14:06

Sweet corn is the work of the Devil.

It reminds me of old men’s teeth.

PandorasXbox · 01/10/2017 14:15

Always have sweet corn with sausage and mash. It's the law in this house!

Sooooooooooooooooooooo · 01/10/2017 14:22

Of course it's ok to have sweetcorn.

Butterymuffin · 01/10/2017 14:28

For me, sweetcorn is the work of the devil, but if you and those eating the meal like it, crack on! It's a vegetable, it's all good.

Grumpysocks · 01/10/2017 14:30

The sweetcorn is fine, absolutely totally 100% fine.

I absolutely hate threads like this, not because of you op, but because you always get a few numptys that want to pick your meal apart thinking they're bloody Gwyneth Paltrow or something.

There are people right now literally starving in the world, there are toddlers in the UK that won't eat anything but biscuits. It really does not matter if op puts sweetcorn with her sausage and mash.

SnorkellingCat · 01/10/2017 14:36

I think it's fine, my 2 year old has to have peas and sweetcorn with sausage and mash, if I serve just one she refuses the whole meal so makes my life easier if she has both.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/10/2017 14:41

Sweetcorn is SUPERB with gravy and mashed potatoes. It really is.

I usually use frozen sweetcorn, as the taste is slightly different from that of tinned and I prefer it, but tinned sweetcorn is still infinitely more delicious that carrots.

Toad in the hole is a dish fit for a king, and adding sweetcorn raises it to a dish fit for the gods.

Go for it.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/10/2017 14:43

Sweetcorn is too starchy. I'd go for broccoli.

I think any veg is better than no veg. He's 3 and probably doesn't eat broccoli...yet. My dd was very vegetable averse at this age and only now eats it under duress.

Pinky333777 · 01/10/2017 14:44

Why not peas carrots and sweetcorn. Or something else like green beans?
I try and serve a few diff veggies at once as it's almost guaranteed someone won't like at least one of them! So I give them a smaller portion of whatever they don't like and try to encourage just a spoonful.
I've even resorted to serving one pea before for a child who doesn't like them.
I try to teach that it's polite to at least taste what's cooked for you, not to mention healthy for your body to have a variety.
But no, sweetcorn wouldn't be weird x

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 01/10/2017 15:08

Oh yes, sounds fine. I used to 'stuff' my individual Yorkshire puddings with sweetcorn and then gently dribble gravy into the hole to allow it all to meld... such deliciousness! Grin

dreamingaboutcheese · 01/10/2017 16:01

So, she got sweetcorn and DH and I had peas. She was very happy with that solution and ate them all and we didn't have to risk the wrong veg on our plates Smile

Dd was suspicious of the Yorkshire Pudding (meringue Smile) at first but ate it all when we told her it was a relative of the pancake.

pinky a lone pea actually crept onto her plate and she looked at it and put it carefully back on my plate without comment.

Thanks all for your words of wisdom. I'll do broccoli next time as she loves that and it will make me happier, being green and all...

lyingwitch. Ooh dd just did that with her mash and called it a volcano!

Schadenfreude thanks... I think so too. Will try frozen sweetcorn next time... I'm intrigued!

Sweetcorn and gravy? Is thos some kind of sick joke? Its sweetcorn and ketchup or nowt.

dreamingaboutcheese · 01/10/2017 16:06

mulberry I think you may have just ruined sweetcorn forever for me...

OP posts:
newmumwithquestions · 01/10/2017 16:08

Sweetcorn and ketchup??? Noooooo!

Gravy goes with everything. Except ice cream - that would be wrong.

dreamingaboutcheese · 01/10/2017 16:08

CoughLaughFart there is no chance of that, although buying a ricer has revolutionised my mash! Grin

In U.S. , at least in the south, sweet corn goes with anything hahaha

DS (7) is the proud owner of a sweetcorn eating medal!

Personally I wouldn't go for sweetcorn with gravy - I prefer sprouts and peas - but I think it's important to let children have a bit of control over what they eat.
