Currently pregnant with baby 2. First was a DS but our original girl's name (which DH had chosen) he has now decided is too common (as in there are lots of them at groups he goes to). He has now suggested another girl's name but I don't particularly like it. It is apparently quite a common Welsh name but I'm English, he's Scottish and we live in Scotland. I don't strongly dislike it but I like more traditional names.

Does it really matter? I suppose a name comes to fit the child. It is phoentically-spelt and I can't see any problems with it turning into an annoying nickname.

Is it Angharad?

Ploppie4 · 30/09/2017 19:50

The name has to be liked by both of you. Not just him

Ploppie4 · 30/09/2017 19:50

OP what names does he like and what names do you like? Maybe we can help with ideas

Queenofthedrivensnow · 30/09/2017 20:06

I love angharad. If I have a dd3 it's bronwyn shortened to Ronnie. I'm Welsh

youhavetobekidding · 30/09/2017 20:14

What's the point of starting a thread like this without disclosing the name?!

Tiredtomybones · 30/09/2017 20:20

I have loved Bronwyn ever since the character in Neighbours in the late 80s/early 90s. I think she was Henry Ramsey's girlfriend. I couldn't persuade DH when I was pregnant with any of our babies though.

Scottishgirl85 · 30/09/2017 20:23

Meredith?

RhiWrites · 30/09/2017 20:25

Is it Rhiannon? Rhiannon is a great name. Smile

BitchQueen90 · 30/09/2017 20:32

If you don't like it, don't use it.

When I was pregnant exh HATED my top choice of girl's name and ditto me for his. We found one that we both liked.

We ended up having a DS though and we'd agreed on boys names from the start so didn't matter in the end. Grin

KatharinaRosalie · 30/09/2017 20:34

YANBU not to be keen on a name your DH chooses.
Would be YABU to name your child something you don't actually like just because he does.

FizzyGreenWater · 30/09/2017 20:34

Yes it matters! If either of you don't love a name - out it goes.

Simple.

JennyBlueWren · 30/09/2017 20:35

Yes it's Seren!
I don't particularly dislike it but don't particularly like it either. It just isn't a name I've even heard of before. I don't know what name I would choose though so don't have an alternative to put forward.

We do have 5 more months to choose...

He suggested Angus for a boys name which I quite like.

Haffiana · 30/09/2017 20:40

I have known three ponies all called Seren.

SemiNormal · 30/09/2017 20:41

Seren is a beautiful name but I think it's a bit overused in Wales. I do know of people outside of Wales using it too (to honor Welsh parents/grandparents without using their relatives names iyswim?).

I personally wouldn't use any name that I didn't absolutely love, if I felt a bit unsure then I don't think I'd use it. That said I do think that names just grow on people and that 99% of the time it doesn't matter what you call them because by the time their a few months old everyone (including you) will be saying 'Oh doesn't his/her name suit her ... she's looks just like a Seren/Angus' because you just can't imagine them being called anything else then.

MiddlingMum · 30/09/2017 20:48

Seren is really popular here - nowhere near Wales. Maybe they all have Welsh connections. I know three small girls and one small dog.....

allinclusive · 30/09/2017 20:48

Middle name it if you don't dislike it, or both draw up a list and hope there's one common name on it x

FizzyGreenWater · 30/09/2017 20:50

I think Wales has reached peak Seren and there is now an increasing overspill into other parts of the British Isles. It's very overused.

Whether I like it is neither here nor there - because you don't! So it's not going to be used. That really is all there is to say, although you could point out just how madly popular it is in Wales and put him off that way.

But really, all you say is NO.

Ploppie4 · 30/09/2017 20:50

Annie for a girl? Or Tess. Bess.

Pinkflamingo121318 · 30/09/2017 20:52

Seren is the bat in Abadas!
It was on CBeebies a couple of years ago, not sure if it still is.

But it was also on our list of names.. we are both English!

FloControl · 30/09/2017 20:58

I'd never heard of Seren as a name until now. My great-niece/grandniece (whatever she is) is called Ines (pronounced Innesh,) which is a French form of Agnes, apparently. Equally peculiar.

Grenoble124 · 30/09/2017 21:03

I think it is a beautiful name.

Sparkletastic · 30/09/2017 21:06

Huh.
I don’t know any Serens.
Maybe it hasn’t reached the southeast.
I like it.

Horsemad · 30/09/2017 21:06

I like Eleri for a girl. Good Welsh name Smile

Neuroticwoman · 30/09/2017 21:26

Heulwen?

implantsandaDyson · 30/09/2017 21:28

I wasn’t keen on my husbands favourite girls name, I just said no it wasn’t for me or mine and that was grand - we’ve three daughters and it never made it onto a list after the first suggestion. In the same way he didn’t like one of my favourite boys names so it was scrubbed. I do like Seren Grin I also like Stella.

I agree with FizzyGreenWater some names can just reach a peak very quickly and then you feel that they’re everywhere. I feel the same way about the name Aoife, it’s a lovely name but it’s easily the most popular for under 7s where I am.
