DH and I were online looking at holidays last night. We check overall TripAdvisor ratings, then look at the terrible reviews to see what people really dislike.

Is this the eternal optimist?!

There's a thread in classics called 'thickos on trip advisor' full of hilarious bad reviews

muminthecity · 30/09/2017 17:12

here it is, enjoy! Grin

MingeFog · 30/09/2017 17:20

Can I just jump in on this thread, as I'm loving it, but it's sooooo the kind of thread that may end up elsewhere. So, I say as loudly as possible;

DAILY MAIL JOURNOS CAN FUCK OFF AND DO SOME ACTUAL JOURNALISM INSTEAD OF LAZY COPY-AND-PASTING FROM A PARENTING WEBSITE

Thanks all, as you were Grin

Also, not a holiday review, but I did have some students moan to me about how boring Stonehenge is.

Ss: it's just some old rocks, it's so boring... I paid money for it
Me: did you read about the history of it/the people in the Visitor's Centre?
Ss: no
Me: did you listen to the information about it? (visitors get a walkie-talkie thing that you put numbers into, to hear as you walk around)
Ss: no
Me: do you like history?
Ss: no

Why go?!

MardAsSnails · 30/09/2017 17:32

Review of a hotel called something like benidorm pool party hotel 'there were no hot birds - total sausage fest of a hotel'.

MozzchopsThirty · 30/09/2017 17:32

I’ve done loads of trip advisor reviews
I’m always fair
Maybe a little sarcastic
And honest

This week I ended up with a refund from posting a pic on there of a large clump of black hair on the shower wall

LastNightMyWifeHooveredMyHead · 30/09/2017 17:42

The Now Show had a segment on complaints once - my favourite was "no-one told us there would be fish in the sea. The children were startled."

I'm recently back from a not-totally-touristic Muslim country: TA is full of complaints over the dawn call to prayer and lack of breakfast bacon - no matter which destination, and reviewers from across Europe (so not just Britain). I think there are half-witted morons wherever you go Grin

metalmum15 · 30/09/2017 17:53

Thickos on trip advisor 😂😂

I love the ones for places like Spain where people complain about things like ants and not being able to leave food out, or the fact they arrive at their villa and there's no milk etc (err...it's self catering - you buy your own. ) I can spend hours getting lost in reviews, on anything. Found myself spending an hour reading reviews on Amazon the other day for things I didn't even want to buy.

Dd works in a hotel and she’s dreading this morning being reviewed.

Guest asked for chopped onions. Dd asked if they were to be raw or cooked. Cooked of course. Chef makes them! Dd presents them to the guest who makes that face and says “WTF are these? They aren’t chopped”

Dd and I are now wanting to know what a chopped onion is? Is it in half, in slices, diced... what?

TheSnowFairy · 30/09/2017 18:27

Thanks minge and mum.

Mozz, your complaint sounds perfectly reasonable - far too reasonable for this thread!

(That's why I haven't included any Pontins reviews Wink)

I also read one where someone was complaining that they'd booked Majorca but were sent to Mallorca which they'd 'never heard of' ! They seemed convinced that they'd been sent to a totally different place Confused

Allthebestnamesareused · 30/09/2017 18:32

Chopped onions - I would say diced. What did chef serve?

Allthebestnamesareused · 30/09/2017 18:33

Anasnake - Jeeezuz! 😂

TheSnowFairy · 30/09/2017 18:34

An example:

'I have just found a review called "my mom died in this hotel"
She had a heart attack due to the lack of air conditioning.

Shock

I've worked for tour operators for the last 18 years, responsible for selecting the hotels that go on sale, so I get to see the complaints and online reviews. My favourite one was at my last company, for a gorgeous 5* hotel that had not long opened, opposite the Tombs of the Kings in Cyprus. The customer had complained that his room overlooked a building site and the rep had to gently point out he had a fabulous view of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Groovee · 30/09/2017 18:59

@Allthebestnamesareused apparently from DD’s description I would say diced...

isseywithcats · 30/09/2017 19:05

i use trip advisor loosely and post fair reviews myself, a few years back booked a hotel in malta and then read the reviews, the reviews were awful and i thought hell what have i done,
i dont know which hotel they stayed in but the one i did was nothing like the reviews it wasnt five star but as a base it was fine,
looking at next years holiday had picked what looked like a perfect hotel and three weeks ago was getting 1/10 bad reviews. before booking i revisited tripadvisor, and all the last 10 reviews have been bad, so yes this time i have been influenced and picked another hotel in the same resort which on trip advisor is getting mainly good reviews

RebelRogue · 30/09/2017 20:29

Negative reviews for hotels I've been at:

-road too dark at 3 am during coach transfer

  • maintenance staff not speaking english

-water in the pool was too cold in the morning

  • not a lot of guests spoke english
  • lack of bacon or anything pork
(Turkey)

-the bacon didn't taste like english bacon(spain)

  • the english newspapers were too expensive compared to prices in uk
gabsdot · 30/09/2017 20:32

The best trip adviser review I ever read was for the all inclusive resort we stayed in, in Majorca last year.
The review read "It was as if Jeremy Kyle bought a hotel"
And he was dead right. Real Brits abroad place. I didn't see that review until we were already there.

MyLittleHelper · 30/09/2017 20:41

Read a review of a 5 star hotel last night. Gave 4 stars as even though everything perfect not enough room in bathroom for all their toiletries which ruined their stay!

saveforthat · 30/09/2017 20:42

The swimming pool was salt water and we are sed to chlorine

problembottom · 30/09/2017 20:56

There's this fantastic pub in the heart of a lovely Lake District town that offers cheap rooms (say £60 a night for a double) and a great fry up in the morning. If you fancy a day's walking, a pint and a warm bed it's the place for you, otherwise you're surrounded by all manner of hotels and BnBs.

I once saw a terrible review from an American couple who were outraged there was no tea strainer in their room. Really, really outraged! Grin

TheSnowFairy · 30/09/2017 21:47

'The customer had complained that his room overlooked a building site and the rep had to gently point out he had a fabulous view of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.'
Grin these people should be named and shamed GrinGrin
