I heard some things the other day.

I also heard that one or two airlines make pilots buy the fuel on their own credit card - it improves the cashflow for the airline and allows them to get it cheap and on "free" credit.

I also heard that the same airline declares more fuel emergencies than any other. Either to jump the landing queue (arriving later than your slot costs money) or because the bare minimum was loaded - to save money.

Not a UK based airline so hard to verify

notanewuser · 01/10/2017 15:17

Any airline that behaves this way will inevitably take short cuts that leads to a disaster

MrsGuyOfGisbo · 01/10/2017 17:12

Watching this with interest as have to go to a place soon where the only easy way to get to is on Ryanair. Have never flown it before but probably will now as everyone else is boycotting so hoping it means there will be fewer people on the plane.
But of course no-one actually will boycott because cheapness and convenience will always get punters in.

Currently watching the situation with Monarch very closely (worked for them for many, many years). Terribly sad for my colleagues/friends who have pretty much accepted (despite the 24 hour reprieve) that the end is nigh. I truly hope they are wrong as Monarch and EasyJet are far superior to Ryanair.

Goshthatwentwell · 01/10/2017 17:47

Radio 4 were saying Monarch were concentrating on long haul rather than short haul. Bit like Norweign. Hope they can manage it.

pasturesgreen · 01/10/2017 17:53

Wasn't a fan of Ryanair before the current upheaval, no way I could be persuaded to fly with them now. I'd much rather spend a bit more and be reasonably sure I'll actually be able to fly wherever I need to go and back and the dates I choose.

pasturesgreen · 01/10/2017 17:54

*On the dates

pineapplehead48 · 01/10/2017 17:55

I have two flights (returns) booked that weren’t on the cancellation lists. Just checked in and the cheeky bastards have purposely sat us apart - several rows apart on opposite sides, on a plane that is 3 quarters empty so we have to pay to sit together Angry the flights only and hour so I won’t be giving Mr O’Leary another £7 the money grabbing little fucker HmmHmm

Backinthebox · 02/10/2017 08:22

notanewuser some airlines do have more fuel incidents than others. The Spanish authorities got fed up with it and set out recommendations to stop it happening as frequently as it was (see linky.) Myself, I've never had to declare a fuel shortage, because I take enough fuel for the situation on the day (whether the extra fuel be for weather, ATC in France on strike again, etc.) Interesting to note that the report above recommended that Ryanair ensure that all of it's pilots were fully competent to speak English (the ICAO standard language) in an aviation environment, which while not mentioned elsewhere it suggests they were not all competent.

Talk among pilots is that Ryanair are in line for a big one. The closest they've come to date is a near-crash in Rome when a captain lost situational awareness due to being unable to think straight as his son had died days earlier. He felt he could not ask for compassionate leave as he feared he would lose his job.

Ryanair also got into a massive public argument with the aviation press, most of which has now been removed from public view, for reporting an incident at Memmingen. It left pilots flabbergasted at the time that Michael O'Leary himself would resort to such cheap mud-flinging at a respected aviation publication as the Aviation Herald. He retracted his abuse, but the incident still happened.

No airline attracts such disgust among professional pilots as Ryanair. But, hey, Cheap Flights!

ShatnersWig · 02/10/2017 08:24

I bet O'Leary is rubbing his hands with glee at the Monarch situation. There's the pilots he needs.

PurplePillowCase · 02/10/2017 08:28

we flew with them this weekend.
all went smoothly.
on time.
if they fly the route you need they are absolutely fine ime.

CamperVamp · 02/10/2017 08:36

"if they fly the route you need" Well, that is the question at the moment, isn't it?
Now cutting 35 routes entirely for months on end... how many passengers thought they were getting a paid for flight, and now aren't?

The safety stuff is disturbing. To anyone flying in or out of an airport where they operate or under their flight path.

GeorginaWorsley · 02/10/2017 08:36

I won't fly with Ryanair after an incident last year where I was called upon to help in a situation(medical ) and there was no oxygen in the canisters

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 02/10/2017 08:39

Shatner you can't just transfer to another airline and fly the next day, it takes a fair while to go through their training and procedures. Monarch isn't a quick fix, plus the aviation market is expanding (despite Monarch) at the moment so I expect that those redundant pilots will be able to secure better positions that working for that idiot.

Backinthebox · 02/10/2017 09:44

When you join an airline you have to go through their initial type rating course (not sure exactly how long this is elsewhere.) You do about 3 weeks of ground school, 4 weeks of simulator and then 3-6 weeks of training flights. You also do about a week of safety and emergency training and other ground company specific duties. So 12-15 weeks at the very soonest. That's not going to fix flights cancelled in November. and if they were able to get them on line faster, you'd have to wonder what short cuts Ryanair would be taking!

If I was an experienced Monarch pilot, I would be taking my experience and type rating anywhere else. There is plenty of demand for decent pilots.

ShatnersWig · 02/10/2017 09:45

Back No, but don't forget Ryanair have scrapped a load of other flights now through until March....

Backinthebox · 02/10/2017 13:42

The British Airline Pilots' Association is a very tight knit bunch, and I've been informed this morning by the union that another major and very reputable airline has already stepped in to offer lots of the pilots jobs. Whatever happens, the union will do their best to make sure any Monarch pilot is given the best opportunities for future employment. Ryanair does not permit employees to be members of a union or professional body - you reap what you sow!

Travis1 · 02/10/2017 14:23

We're booked with them for the end of November, they were the only ones flying the route we need so now it's an 8 week wait to make sure the flights go ahead.
