Will never book with them again.

coddiwomple · 30/09/2017 10:39

Can you afford alternate airline and/or trains if things go tits up?

Unfortunately, for some destinations Ryanair is the ONLY airline. I avoid them like the plague, but there are a few cities where it's them or find alternate mode of transport. I wish other airlines could jump on that and stop their monopoly!

supersop60 · 30/09/2017 10:41

Don't trust them. Plus, if they see people still booking, they will think they've got away with it.
I'd love to know what the real story is here - there's something we're not being told.

happilyeverafta · 30/09/2017 10:41

Jeez you lot are acting as if they've personally assaulted you!

It's a no frills cheap airline, you get what you pay for.

Nobody remember the great BA fuck yo?!

happilyeverafta · 30/09/2017 10:41

Up not yo* lol

theEagleIsLost · 30/09/2017 10:44

No - because I don't think they'll have sorted out their issues in that time frame so they may not get you there and back.

TheRealBiscuitAddict · 30/09/2017 10:46

This is the airline who routinely discriminate against the disabled, who charged passengers for wheelchair use, who sell a flight for £9.99 and charge you £65 to print a boarding pass and the list goes on.

I would never have used them prior to this because of how incompetent they really are but I think that anyone who uses them after this debacle needs their head read. To whoever said that they think that this will be the end of Ryanair I sincerely hope so.

ArseholesOnToast · 30/09/2017 10:47

Regarding rolling staff leave over, I saw in the news that staff have a limit of 900 flying hours a year and it's illegal to go over this, so I think that's why. Happy to be corrected as I was only watching the news with one eye.

Butterymuffin · 30/09/2017 10:53

Ah, thanks Arseholes Grin

troodiedoo · 30/09/2017 10:55

There's no frills, there's poor customer service and there's utter contempt for them. I'd avoid at all costs.

Longdistance · 30/09/2017 10:56

Are you mad? Where is it you need to get to? Wizzair are really good.

CiderwithBuda · 30/09/2017 11:02

Apparently about 150 pilots left and went to Norwegian Air who were offering signing up bonuses. It seems like they all went at the same time leaving massive gaps in staffing. Hence the holiday issue. I suspect none of the pilots were allowed to take holidays over the busy summer months. But they legally have to take holidays as they have a limit on their hours per year.

Ryanair have always treated everyone badly. They tried to be nice for a while but it could never last with O'Leary at the helm.

I suspect also that they have overstretched themselves with routes and hubs and were skating on thin ice with regard to staffing levels etc.

I'm Irish and live in uk. Used to avoid them like the plague but in the last couple of years had started to use them. Not any more!

I have a flight booked from Dublin to Bristol at the end of October. So far it's not been cancelled but I have a back up in case it is.

I really couldn't trust them again.

worridmum · 30/09/2017 11:06

Basically according to my BiL who is a pilot Ryanair pays its pilots well below market rates and pressures staff to work dangerously long hours. The only good thing he has said is that they promote pilots to captain much quicker then other airlines.

Hence why alot of their pilots have been poached because the money and work conditions are shit and the holiday problem is a cover story because they cannot say we treat our staff like shit and pay them peanuts and they have mostly voted with there feet and gone to other airlines can they?

To be honsert yabu to even think of using Ryanair they are a shit company that treats its employees like slaves

woollyminded · 30/09/2017 11:07

I used to fly with them, knew what it was and treated it like a bus i.e. sat wherever, just a bag in my hand, didn't need to be fed or buy lottery tickets. But leaving people stranded and badly out of pocket is too much and now that I have heard how badly they exploit their staff (this isn't all about holiday leave, they have a big ole retention problem) I'll use another company now.

I hope we don't lose the affordable flight model as it has been great to be able to pop over and see friends and relatives informally. Before the budgets it was weddings and funerals only or all the holiday leave taken up with trains, ferries and buses. But I think there is a middle ground where customers and crew can be treated with a bit more respect.

So no, Ryanair is not to be trusted. There is a big chance that you will be dumped pre-flight, re-routed, stranded and that this may well be because O'Leary has hoovered up all the cash he can find and bailed on you and his staff.

CloudNinetyNine · 30/09/2017 11:10

That doesn't sound like a good thing to me - it suggests they have less experienced flight crew.

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 11:12

I would be very surprised if the airline is still in business by the end of the year.

Fly Jet2 instead. They are very good.

coddiwomple · 30/09/2017 11:12

Look where Ryanair is registered, and how they cleverly dodge tax... I seem to remember they have been "Investigated" recently but they always find the loophole. Fair enough, they are not the only ones, but they treat their staff like crap, they treat their customer like crap.

I don't like the "hidden charges". Every single time I compared their cost with another airline like BA, they ended up being more expensive! I only use them when there's no other option.

Popkids · 30/09/2017 11:16

This article from an ex-pilot put it into perspective for me. Pretty sure lots of airlines are trying to cut staff costs but as ever it looks like Ryanair treat their staff with the same contempt they have for passengers.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/sep/20/ryanair-treat-pilots-better-crisis-long-haul

Roomster101 · 30/09/2017 11:17

I have always avoided Ryanair and often fly from a different airport to our local one just to use another airline. I know they are slightly cheaper than other airlines but they do this by ripping some people off as has happened recently. I don't want to give money to an unethical company that treats its customers and probably staff with total contempt.

CamperVamp · 30/09/2017 11:17

I was offered a free use of a holiday apartment over Oct half term and haven't taken it up because the only flights I could get (apart from expensive scheduled ones, which I can't afford, free apartment or not) are Lyin' Air.

Not worth the risk, hassle, disappointment, booking time off work etc.

redexpat · 30/09/2017 11:18

Ive never had a problem with them, you do need to read the small print, the staff are much more polite than other airlines, theyve never lost my bags and they fly to my local airport. Having said that I wont book anytjing in the next few months, not that Id planned to anyway.

Please watch this, it's hilarious.

SusanTheGentle · 30/09/2017 11:21

I like low cost airlines, I have no problem with the no frills thing. But what I completely hate about Ryanair is how they turned low cost into such a fucking complicated and miserable experience. I'm happy to pay less to easyJet and get a basic experience. I'm not happy that working out how to book a journey and SHOCK actually check my bag ends up taking three hours. That's Ryanair's fault.

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 11:22

redexpat I have never had any airline staff be rude to me.
