In the middle of nowhere on holiday. My iPhone fell into the hot tub (I know I know) what can I do to save it? Turned it straight off, took SIM card out, got no rice. Please help Sad

Rice doesn't work anyway.

Put it in a warm dry place. Wait. It's either fucked or it isn't.

seventeenlittleducks · 29/09/2017 18:24

SIM card is completely dry no red light inside sim point (frantic googling)
I'm just so gutted, not because it's my phone because it's a bloody expensive phone Angry

Put it in cous cous as that's smaller than rice. If you can find some silica gel then that works really well. It's the stuff that is in new shoes and handbags.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 29/09/2017 18:39

Turning it off may well have fried it...on the off chance it hasn't, put in rice and don't touch it at all for at least 2/3 days

TheBakeryQueen · 29/09/2017 18:44

If it's just water it will more than likely dry out fine. You did the right thing turning it off. Pop it somewhere warm to dry out but if you can get some rice then pop it in with it in a tub.

Wait until dry before turning back on.

lazydog · 29/09/2017 18:46

"Turning it off may well have fried it"

Errr, no. Turning it off quickly is the one thing that might have saved it! Ideally you'd want to remove the battery too, but not so easy with an iPhone.

seventeen Definitely track down some silica gel pouches if you can. Failing that, put it somewhere warm and don't even consider trying to turn it back on for 3 or 4 days. Basically, the longer you can wait, the less the chance that it'll still have residual water inside and therefore the less chance of something shorting out when you turn the phone back on.

BishopstonFaffing · 29/09/2017 18:48

Silica gel pouches frequently found inside zip pockets of suitcases

lazydog · 29/09/2017 18:48

You ideally want somewhere very warm, but not hot, so do not put it on top of a radiator or use a hairdryer on it, but do have it somewhere >30C if poss.

No advice, but my phone disappeared down the u bend last year and after hoiking it out I left it in rice for the night. It played up for a few days, the screen would randomly swipe left or right and the touch button wouldn't work but after about a week it sorted itself out.

Good luck

DarthMaiden · 29/09/2017 19:18

Once dropped my iPhone (was a 5s at the time) in the bath I promise I wasn’t mumsnetting at the time Grin.

Like you, I switched it off and took out the SIM.

I left it to dry out for a few days and it was fine - in fact it still is, my DM now owns it after upgraded to the 7plus.

Like a pp said, put it somewhere dry and airy. Don’t be tempted to switch it on until it’s properly dried out - so a good 72 hours plus.

Honestly there’s a chance it will be fine.

BikeRunSki · 29/09/2017 19:26

Rice worked for me, but that may have been coincidence of course.
But - I got a grain of rice stuck in the charger port, and had to have this surgically removed by the Apple geeks at the Genius Bar - apparently I was very lucky that the rice was fractured so they were able to get it out without damaging any contacts etc.

If you do go for rice/cous cous/silica grains, put your phone in a pop sock first!

TopBitchoftheWitches · 29/09/2017 19:28

Rice does work if the phone is switched off straight away.

dd2 might have dropped hers into the toilet once or twice

WhatInTheWorldIsGoingOn · 29/09/2017 19:31

My iPhone has been in the toilet twice. It's really important that it is switched off immediately and then absolutely not turned back on until it is completely dry. A good couple of days in a tumble dryer. I'm typing on it now!

ShotsFired · 29/09/2017 19:35

I flushed my iphone. I was at an event and I had no idea what to do, so I fished it out and immediately stuck it in the Dyson airblade and hoped for the best.

Googling later suggest that the rapid drying out is what probably saved it, as it's not the water itself, it's the short circuiting caused by the moisture when you turn it on again.

So rice is ok, but really you need to ACTIVELY move the moisture out as fast as possible, not passively.

LivingInMidnight · 29/09/2017 19:36

If it's a 7 it's water resistant so hopefully very little water will have got in. I'd be a bit worried about what might be in the hot tub water and might use a bit of rubbing alcohol. Studies have shown rice doesn't make much difference but warm airflow does.

whirlyswirly · 29/09/2017 19:40

My iPhone se survived a dunk in the bath. Didn't turn it off or do the rice thing and it was fine. Took it to have the screen fixed when I dropped it a week later (Hmm) and they checked and said there was no water damage at all.

When I googled it, it turns out they're trying to waterproof them but it's not reliable enough to advertise. Hopefully yours is the same.

lazydog · 29/09/2017 19:40

A good couple of days in a tumble dryer. Shock

What??!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/09/2017 19:42

A good couple of days in a tumble dryer

Really?!

seventeenlittleducks · 29/09/2017 19:50

It's an se but a goggle search did suggest a bit of waterproofing Shock
Tumble dryer? Confused
Just live chatted with o2 and they want £200+ for me to upgrade. I thought you could free upgrade after a year, had my contract 18 months of a 24. Fuckers Sad

flutterby12 · 29/09/2017 20:01

I did the same and had the screen replaced a few days later and it was fine. Was bricking it because the girl before me lied when they asked if any water damage and they could tell by the sensors but thankfully mine was ok!

seventeenlittleducks · 29/09/2017 20:09

Whirly what iPhone was yours? I'm hoping I've got lucky but ahh holiday will cost double what it was if not because of my stupidly, I'll laugh else I'll cry Grin

OP posts:
whirlyswirly · 29/09/2017 21:37

It was the SE model - equivalent to a 7 I think - got it about a year ago. It's going strong still despite my best efforts to kill it.
I felt sick at the time. I properly launched it into a full bubble bath and it sank to the bottom Shock

seventeenlittleducks · 29/09/2017 21:38

Ah that fills me with hope! Come on apple prove me why I love iPhones!

OP posts:
whirlyswirly · 29/09/2017 21:39

Do not tumble dry! Just leave it be and hopefully it'll recover. I think I blasted mine with a hairdryer but that was it.

ShotsFired · 29/09/2017 22:09

I think (am hoping anyway!) that the pp who mentioned the tumble dryer has theirs on every day, and was suggesting that OP places the phone in it when it is warm from being used? Not actually tumble drying the phone!
