In the middle of nowhere on holiday. My iPhone fell into the hot tub (I know I know) what can I do to save it? Turned it straight off, took SIM card out, got no rice. Please help Sad

I dropped my 5S in the (unused) toilet the other week - I completely forgot it was in my back jeans pocket. I needed to leave home shortly afterwards for an appointment so didn't bother turning it off or using rice or doing anything at all and just accepted I would need to get it repaired or replaced. Two weeks later and I haven't had a single problem with it.

I have used the "turn it off and leave it in a bowl of rice for 24 hours" trick previously (same phone, same toilet) which also seems to have worked.

I reaaaalllly need to stop putting my phone in my back pocket Grin

My iPod went through the washing machine, left it in a bowl of rice for a day and It was fine Smile

Three times my 6s has been down the loo (I don't learn) and all three times its been ok after dying out in the airing cupboard.

Don't be tempted to put a hairdryer in it etc. Just put it somewhere warm and forget it for 24 hours.

Rice works but it hugely increases its survival chances if you don't switch it on for a couple of days. That said, I now keep a silica phone rescue pack in my glove box just in case after an unpleasant experience excavating a grain of rice from the charger socket. .

I broke my iPhone 4 by dropping it down the loo. It worked after the rice trick but would no longer connect to wifi.

Rice works for me every time. Get some rice!!

This has happened to me (twice) when my i-Phone got left in the rain**

Do not use rice. Use silica gel if you can find it or buy some Damp Rid type wardrobe absorbing crystals or even Kitty Litter from the supermarket. Switch phone off. Put a layer* (1-2cm) *into a lidded plastic container, somehow elevate the phone just above the drying agent (use anything for this, just something to lift the phone), seal with the lid and leave in a warm place for a day or two.

Check after a day by turning on, if it doesn't come on, just leave for another day. Be patient. Mine came back on after maybe 30 hours, the first time it only came back on enough to need recharging after which it worked as good as new.

Don't give up hope, I was amazed when mine came back as good as new. It takes a while though, so be patient.

*For anyone wondering, we don't have mobile coverage where we live, except on one end of our verandah where we can get one bar, enough to send & receive a text. So if I send a text, I need to leave it on the verandah rail to get a reply. Hence, accidently leaving it there overnight when it is unexpectedly rained.

My phone survived!! Working fine! No problems from what I can see. I think my protective glass helped save the screen and the fact, I moved like the flash to fish it out. Seems like apple are quietly making them somewhat water proof thankfully! Learnt my lesson though. No phones by water from now on!

Whoop whoop. Now try not to smash it on a pub floor like I did mine the following week Blush

seventeenlittleducks · 30/09/2017 22:06

I've had to take my glass off so I'm very nervous of it until my new one arrives. Fingers crossed it survives the next few days, I don't want to fork out for a new screen although cheaper than a new phone I suppose

I dropped my galaxy out walking the dogs in a stream and didn't notice. Realised 20 mins later and fished it out. Works just as well as before

That's fantastic seventeenlittleducks!

What a relief! After reading this thread, I've been thinking that just drying off the phone, leaving it in a warm place and patiently waiting is enough, and that rice/silica gel etc isn't really needed.

If I'm silly enough to leave my iPhone sitting in the rain overnight again (bound to happen) I'm not going to bother about the sealed containers & silica gel palaver.
