In my circle 5 babies have been born this year. All the mums are in a relationship or married. Two of the the babies have reflux,Both their mums are perfectionists in general and have eating/weight issues. The babies are being breast fed so I wondered if there is a connection

Not in my experience Confused. It's due to the immaturity of the baby's gut and in some cases allergies or intolerances, not the mother's diet.

PorpoisefullyObtuse · 29/09/2017 18:00

My 8 yo has had reflux her entire life. I'm so glad that you've pointed out it's my fault. Cheers.

Blahblahboo · 29/09/2017 18:11

No link. My nephew is still on meds for reflux at 10 but I did wonder if it developed initially because he was breastfed via pump instead of boob. You know because it's the baby sucking on the nipple that influences the milk and this didn't happen, so he didn't get the right milk that he needed.
Anyways the point being that there is no current link

miniloco · 29/09/2017 18:48

Why would being a perfectionist cause reflux, a weakness in the oesophageal sphincter?

Elephant17 · 29/09/2017 18:56

Odd post... I can't see why Confused

Also not sure why their marital status is relevant to your question

lynlyn85 · 30/09/2017 15:34

I just wondered if they were trying too hard to be the perfect mum

Pickleypickles · 30/09/2017 15:35

Trying so hard it gave them reflux Confused

MrsMotherHen · 30/09/2017 15:37

I know 4 babies one being my own 16week old all with reflux not one is breastfed. So thats one link gone.
Your talking shit!

SteelyPip · 30/09/2017 15:39

OP, this post is incredibly insulting. Please do your research. My son had reflux issues which blighted his and our life until he was about 6. It was caused by his prematurity.

Redredredrose · 30/09/2017 15:40

Ffs. Seriously? Yes, my son has reflux because I'm 'a perfectionist'. Not because he had a cow's milk protein allergy. Honestly, there's always some fucking idiot out there finding yet another bloody way to beat mothers up for their parenting choices.

Changerofname987654321 · 30/09/2017 15:41

I am alway confused by the married/partners point.

Lostmyemailaddress · 30/09/2017 15:43

I wouldn't say so I have had 2 dcs with reflux the older 1 was prem and it is common with prem babies. My youngest is 10 weeks old was born 4 days before her due date and has also been diagnosed with reflux both ff.
I have never tried to be a perfect mum and have 7dcs I think it's just one of those things. It's cause because the sphincter muscles and weak and that allows acid and milk up easier. It's in no way a reflect on the parent babies from all sorts of background can suffer from it.
Some babies can grow out of it my older dc with it dis but we're unsure with youngest as the meds don't really work very well.

AuntLydia · 30/09/2017 15:43

Huh? How can they give their babies reflux by 'trying too hard'? I'm not remotely a perfectionist and have no weight/eating issues but had a baby with reflux.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 30/09/2017 15:52

You're judging these mothers very harshly, OP. Why? Why start a post about them trying too hard and whether that's caused reflux? It's like you want it to be true...

lynlyn85 · 30/09/2017 15:57

I only wondered if being uptight had any bearing on reflux. Thanks for explaining why it happens, but more scary the venom of MN when it's aimed at you for trying to find answers

OP posts:
LovelyPrep · 30/09/2017 16:01

Breastfeeding means you're uptight?
My son was formula fed and had reflux, my daughter was breastfeed and didn't. I suppose my anecdotal evidence disproves yours Hmm
Try not to be so rude and judgemental next time you want information..

Ilovecoleslaw · 30/09/2017 16:03

You seriously think that being uptight causes someone's child to have reflux?

Give me strength

Easyonthetonic · 30/09/2017 16:03

Sometimes it's best to google when you're trying to find answers, use an NHS site.

HippadoppaloppaGammeldag · 30/09/2017 16:04

FF both my 2 DDs. DD1 had it, DD2 didn't. No link between type of feeding.

Redredredrose · 30/09/2017 16:07

How can a parent being uptight have any bearing on the child's cardiac sphincter? You're just being judgemental about your so-called friends. And yes, vitriol does tend to be directed at judgemental horrid who ask leading questions with the aim of slagging off new mums who are almost certainly having a difficult time with their reflux-y babies. Don't try the disingenuous 'only asking for information' bollocks.

JumpingJetFlash · 30/09/2017 16:18

So can you explain how a Mum trying to be perfect causes the baby to vomit prolifically? To add to your anecdata, I had a bottlefed baby who was 5 weeks prem and has subsequently been identified with hypermobility which is quite common with children who have reflux. Fortunately it settled down a lot when she moved onto solids but it was pretty miserable not being able to feed her outside the house as she vomited quite impressively and it was so embarrassing!

bedtimestories · 30/09/2017 16:23

My boy was born with silent reflux. I didn't bother with my weight or being a perfectionist. I found nothing went to plan. He was bf, breast milk is meant to have soothing effect on bf babies

missarcher · 30/09/2017 16:24

Well you sound charming.. I'm the most easy going (generally called the 'hippy' friend as well) and my 1yo has sever reflux, there's definitely no connection it's just one of those things that happens

seven201 · 30/09/2017 16:46

This is just bizarre! My 15 month old is still on meds for her silent reflux. She has allergies, was combination fed and I'm quite laid back. Although I feel slightly miffed after reading your judgy op.

seven201 · 30/09/2017 16:47

Oh and I'm about 2 stone overweight, and have been for quite a while. Can't be bothered to properly exercise and I love chocolate too much.
