To wonder where on earth the Jeremy Kyle show find these people?

(made an epic fail just now and posted this on landlords discriminating against Vietmanse people so here with a shiny thread all of its own!!)

Day off - just finished everything and decided to watch some rare afternoon TV... The Jeremy Kyle show is has a group of people arguing about theirsex lives with the title across the screen

"If you cheated on a trampoline we're over for good"

What on earth... where on earth did they find them and how on earth do they get them to do this on national TV?

Despicable man and show. Yes, the majority go on there of their own accord but trust me when I say their researchers target and approach vulnerable people and seek them out actively and I have actually been witness to this. Just putting that out there early so the threads not full of "Well if they want to humiliate themselves then they're free to do so". They will seek out vulnerable people or people with mental health problems and encourage them to appear.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 29/09/2017 15:42

They also pay for a night in a hotel and a meal and I believe you get £200 expenses, too.

Nettletheelf · 29/09/2017 15:51

They used to advertise on notice boards in community centres in deprived areas: 'would you like to set the record straight/resolve a dispute and get a night away in a hotel plus your travel and free dinner and drinks' etc..

KarateKitten · 29/09/2017 15:52

Mumsnet at times.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 29/09/2017 15:53

It's a despicable format, I don't know why it's allowed.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 29/09/2017 15:55

It's disgusting. Jeremy Springer used to do the same. It was always middle Class America laughing at the lower classes who were lured in by free travel, hotels and a chance of fame.

WaxWaxWax · 29/09/2017 15:56

They advertised in a town I used to live, on community centre noticeboards and local Facebook selling pages. They did interviews in a local pub one day. They were quite clearly targeting those living in the "socially deprived" part of town, those who didn't work, those who weren't well educated, and those who were vulnerable.

They were offering an all expenses paid overnight stay in Manchester and free DNA tests or lie detector tests.

Talkietalk · 29/09/2017 15:57

Yep - they pay for them

Unhappyyear1 · 29/09/2017 15:59

It's desperate peoples chance for their 15 minutes of fame. They don't care what for. Plus if the £200 expenses is true that's alot of money for some.

Unhappyyear1 · 29/09/2017 16:02

I'd like to know who funds it. The advertisers I suspect so ultimately us consumers.

UnFuckingAcceptable · 29/09/2017 16:02

Didn't a judge once slate the programme for its 'bear baiting' tactics after a fight after the show ended up with a guy in court?
How anyone can watch this, especially in the studio, is beyond me. Talk about having no respect for your fellow man.

brasty · 29/09/2017 16:04

They actively seek out vulnerable people. It is the modern equivalent of going to Bedlam asylum and laughing at the lunatics.

livefornaps · 29/09/2017 16:04

It's manipulative and so sad.

Some people even come back to the show a second time - Jeremy talks to them in a way that both leers at them and makes them feel important. They are clearly fuelled by the drama and excitement of the whole thing - that's the only way you'd be blind to how cruel and base the show is. I wonder if for some of the participants if it is the first time in their lives that they have been made to feel important, and that they matter.

silverking · 29/09/2017 16:07

I can't watch the Jeremy Kyle show. I find all that shouting really stressful and I have to turn the tv over. Years ago I did love a bit of Jerry Springer though.

brasty · 29/09/2017 16:07

And if you are desperately poor, travel to London, meals and a night in a "posh" hotel in London, is a big draw.

Watched a programme where they met some of the people who had been on Jeremy Kyle. I always remember one young man whose mother was livid about it, because her adult son had moderate learning difficulties and had been wound up by the production staff. Not that the show had said that of course.

Needalifeoverhaul · 29/09/2017 16:07

I hate everything about this programme with a passion. I refuse to watch it now. I can't stand the way he deliberately provokes and humiliates people whilst playing the ' I'm helping you' card. Like pp said, it's vulnerable people who are subjected to this bullying behaviour

MumsOnCrack · 29/09/2017 16:08

It's recorded in Manchester not London...but...

They have helped people find their families and kick drugs. It's not all bad.

MargaretTwatyer · 29/09/2017 16:11

Ah nothing like a bit of the Jeremy Kyle show to start a bit of MN pearl clutching.

Personally I think it makes a lot of MNers uncomfortable as it reveals uncomfortable truths about some of the underclass; I think many would like to pretend that they're noble unfortunates just waiting patiently for Jeremy Corbyn to pay for the college course that will lift them up by their bootstraps.

I live fairly close to an estate which sources a lot of their guests and they seem fairly typical/not even the worst. I think it's something a lot of people would like to remain hidden.

It was much worse under the last Labour gov and before benefits reform.

Minidoghugs · 29/09/2017 16:12

I feel like its all very staged. I sometimes catch it but it's not my thing really. But have you noticed how many of the people have awful teeth? I always brush mine after watching.

scortja · 29/09/2017 16:14

Also it's not the middle classes laughing at the working classes - the audience are the same 'class' as the guests..

The middle classes are the ones who consider it 'bear baiting,' Bedlam, etc etc..

I thoroughly enjoy it!

scortja · 29/09/2017 16:16

It was much worse under the last Labour gov and before benefits reform

Why do you think this is? (genuine question)

hannah1992 · 29/09/2017 16:17

I hate the shows where it is solely for "entertainment" sometimes I wonder whether some of the couples that do lie detector tests are even a couple.

However, the find the families, drugs and the ones where people take their disabled children on to raise awareness I think are good.

Can't stand the rest of it. I remember one show a while ago where a woman's ex had taken her on for a DNA test on her baby. She had gotten pregnant months after they had split. Best thing was was the woman and her ex were both white but the baby was mixed race 🤔. I really could not believe what I was seeing. If that's not set up I don't know what is

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 29/09/2017 16:17

scortja I was referencing Jerry Springer in terms of the audience - if you watch that you can see a class difference in studio audience and stage. Always naked people on stage too!

listsandbudgets · 29/09/2017 16:17

Very sad. I couldn't watch for more than a few minutes.

£200 and a night in a hotel in exchange for your dignity and the prospect of becoming a national laughing stock, Targeting the vulnerable , winding up people with learning difficulties...

Not sure I'll be watching it again

Some are actors, thankfully.
