Science is a body of knowledge & the method for adding to it. It cannot be sexist.

You, on the other hand, remembering your views on this thread...

PricklyBall · 29/09/2017 15:26

Ah yes, Mythbusters on youtube. That well known high-impact peer reviewed journal, as found via searches using google scholar. Oh, hang on a minute...

Pigface1 · 29/09/2017 15:29

Ho ho.

TooDamnSarky · 29/09/2017 15:30

Actually I do think that science is highly sexist. But not sure why that video is relevant to this discussion.

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/09/2017 15:39

YABU to think that Mythbusters speak/experiment for all of science.

CoteDAzur · 29/09/2017 15:45

"I do think that science is highly sexist."

Science cannot be sexist.

A scientist can be sexist.

The scientific community can be sexist (although you would need to interview a statistically significant number of scientists to come to that conclusion).

People can be sexist if they believe women can't be good scientists.

Science isn't and can't be sexist.

Coconutspongexo · 29/09/2017 15:46

That link doesn't suggest science is sexist..

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 29/09/2017 15:50

CoteDAzur is correct.

BarbaraofSevillle · 29/09/2017 15:54

The scientific community can be sexist (although you would need to interview a statistically significant number of scientists to come to that conclusion)

Perfect scientific explanation Smile

I saw this picture the other day Grin

YABU. But a dictionary or pick up a copy of new scientist or sonething.

AtHomeDadGlos · 29/09/2017 16:51

I’m sexist?!

Oh dear. Here we go...

OP posts:
PricklyBall · 29/09/2017 16:58

I think, Cote, that depends on what you mean by "science". If you mean the underlying facts that science describes, then yes, facts are facts, they're not sexist, or morally contentious, or politically loaded. But "science" as the collective body of human knowledge which seeks to describe those facts is a human construction, and as such, can be coloured by and influenced by politics, moral beliefs, religious beliefs, sexism, racism...

Of course if you were an anti--realist about the philosophy of science, you'd contest whether it was possible to be sure there was an underlying world of objective facts, since everything we know about it is mediated by our theoretical framework and interpretation of it.

AtHomeDadGlos · 29/09/2017 17:01

I think what prickly is trying to say is that if you have bigger boobs you get tipped better. Especially, as it turns out, by women.

OP posts:
CoteDAzur · 29/09/2017 19:50

No, that's not what Prickly is saying.

And you need a hobby.

Does your wife/partner know that you try to chat up women about big boobs on the internet while she is out working to support the family?

PricklyBall · 29/09/2017 20:42

Well quite, Cote. It takes a very special level of perviness to interpret a comment about realism versus anti-realism in the philosophy of science as a comment about boobs. Not to mention a very special level of stupidity (whether wilful or innate I couldn't possibly say).

donquixotedelamancha · 29/09/2017 22:44

I was going to post about the nature of Science, but can't put it better than cote did.

I was just about to point out that just because OP is a bit silly and OTT about smoking when pregnant, it doesn't follow that he must be sexist. Then this arrived:

"I think what prickly is trying to say is that if you have bigger boobs you get tipped better."

So I give up.

CantThinkOfAUserNameNotTaken · 29/09/2017 23:57

Cote put it greatly though this part is very true Science cannot be sexist science can be very very sexy.
