Any fruit or vegetables at all? I have a friend who says she never eats any fruit or vegetables at all.

I have never heard of this. I think surely it's very bad for your health. And limiting Hmm

DP will eat peas and carrots on Christmas Day and with a roast. Maybe the odd banana here and there, other than that nothing. I’m not a big fan of fruit but I love most vegetables, the kids love both fruit and veg which is handy!

chickenwire17 · 30/09/2017 13:47

Someone asked how I got nine portions of fruit & veg yesterday:

porridge for breakfast (I sometimes add berries or whatnot)

lunch - baked potato & cream cheese, salad leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, runner beans from the garden (five portions)

mid afternoon - apple and a banana (two portions) & handful of nuts

Dinner - macaroni & broccoli cheese with butternut squash, tomato & runner beans (two portions; I have already counted beans and toms)

supper - banana (already counted).

My step father has not eaten any fruit or veg for the 45 years I've known him.
When I learned that cows have a single enzyme that enables them to turn grass into protein, I did wonder if my step dad was and to manufacture vitamin c somehow in his body as he's never got scurvy. I do have a bit of a tangential mind though.

Galena · 30/09/2017 17:23

Chickenwire, potatoes don't count as one of your 5 a day because they are starchy. Also, it's worth looking at packaging to see how much of something constitutes a portion. It's easy to think you have had more portions than you have, because actually what you have had is actually only half a portion...

marymoosmum · 30/09/2017 17:31

Yes! Me. I throw up every time i attempt to eat any. I take vitamin tablets and drunk fruit juice.

Queenofthedrivensnow · 30/09/2017 17:40

Exp. he's still alive

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 17:48

Do you think it is psychological marymoosmum?

Tealdeal747 · 30/09/2017 17:52

I eat fruit- mostly bananas, apples and satsumas but very little veg.

I'll eat chips but hate boiled potatoes.

I will eat raw veg like carrots or baby spinach but won't eat these cooked.

Red pepper I'll have a small amount cooked on pizza or in a sauce but not big bits or raw.

I don't eat salad- lettuce, cucumber, tomato.

I have tomato sauce on pizza but don't really like tomato based sauces.

I like mushrooms but they don't have much nuitrition in them!

I force myself to eat boiled broccoli once a week but that's pretty much my cooked veg for the week.

I just find the taste/ texture of most veg very unpleasant.

I was forced to eat it as a dc so think the negative/punishment associations have stuck.

lollypoppins83 · 30/09/2017 17:54

I don't eat fruit. Can't stand it. But I love veg..

waltonbornandbred · 30/09/2017 17:57

I had a DC who would only eat beige food but eats more or less everything now an adult.

With the acception of strawberries because of the 'seeds'. Biscuit

waltonbornandbred · 30/09/2017 18:00
  • acception - lol
  • exception
LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 18:01

I think some of the issues here is the way some people cook and present vegetables. Plain boiled broccoli is rather dull, so why not dress it with extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.

Salad is boring without salad dressing. My favourite is just a plain good quality balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil, plus a bit of salt and pepper.

GiraffeFluff · 30/09/2017 18:02

To those saying that potatoes are a vegetable - nutritionally they're classed as a starch. So they don't count as one of your 'five a day', unfortunately!

AssassinatedBeauty · 30/09/2017 18:10

They might not be one of the 5 or 7 a day, but they are definitely a vegetable. Albeit a starchy one.

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 18:11

But it doesn't count as a vegetable, in the same way as rice doesn't, even though it is a plant.

marymoosmum · 30/09/2017 18:14

Probably Japonica. I eat enough other stuff and I have had two healthy children, the older one (who is the only one who eats solids atm) loves fruit and veg.

mathanxiety · 30/09/2017 18:18

DD4, aged 16 Sad. Point blank refuses to eat any fruit or veg. Apparently, all vegetables are 'bitter'. She eats pizza.

I make her take vitamins and I also hide pureed veg and fruit in baked goods. Chocolate brownies hide a multitude.

AssassinatedBeauty · 30/09/2017 18:19

It doesn't count in the 5 a day, but it is still classified as a vegetable. Rice isn't a vegetable. Eating a portion of potatoes with their skin on is a healthy thing to do, assuming you're not adding lots of butter/cheese etc.

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 18:19

Carrot cake anyone?

mathanxiety · 30/09/2017 18:24

DD4 will not eat carrot cake as she can see the little bits of carrot in it.

ethelfleda · 30/09/2017 18:27

I've met a few people who don't. I think it really odd but then we are all different - I absolutely love fruit and veg! Most days easily get between 5 and 9 portions a day! I could eat a plate of broccoli and I get a lot of satisfaction from cutting open a perfectly ripe avocado... mmmm
Asparagus is beautiful, I adore sweet potato and baby plum tomatoes are amazing!
I travelled around East Africa a few years ago and was in my absolute element with the fruit and veg on offer there... I am actually making myself hungry thinking about it! And can't wait to start batch cooking soup with loads of veg in for winter!!!!
Don't get me wrong though... I like junk food as much as the next person... pizza for dinner tonight Grin

missuspritch · 30/09/2017 18:41

Yes! My husband doesn't eat any fruit or vegetables atall, he eats toast, porridge, ham and cheese toasties (no butter), sausage rolls or steak slices, battered chicken breasts, chips, pie in a tin and a few select other things... that's literally it. He's fairly well built, not skinny but very far from fat.

Once however he did try to be 'healthy' by making fruit smoothies, banana blueberry and strawberry based ones, he made the first one, drank it and half hour later he said his face felt funny.... it had swelled and turned slightly purple.. turns out he's allergic to bananas 😂😂 hilarious at the time and still just as funny now ...

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2017 18:47

How do posters with partners who have restricted diets manage when eating out?

dowsabel · 30/09/2017 18:47

I was married to someone who didn't eat them. He spent our marriage convinced I was trying to kill him with hidden veg or he would suffer death by parsley. It was infuriating and learned behaviour from his parents (only child, over indulged, mother with significant MH problems, his dad used to sieve Homepride cook in sauces to get the veg out - he was 27 and a qualified doctor at the time 😳 I should have seen the signs!). I managed to get him to accept onion but it was a nightmare. Happily he is his new wife's problem now and I don't have to fantasise about stabbing the back of his hand with a fork as he picked through a meal like a gorilla checking his mate for lice!

marymoosmum · 30/09/2017 18:59

Quite easily. I eat meat so order meat and ask for no veg, or we go to a place locally that does carvery.
