www.piriallergy.com/product-range/piriton.html

Often have this in our cupboards we get lots of allaergy reactions to stuff - and can stop itching or give at least some relief.

PollyFlint · 27/09/2017 10:47

I just cant understand if it is fleas why no one else is being bitten.

They probably are being bitten - it's just that they're not allergic to the bites like you are.

DP and I both got bitten a lot by hideous flies on a trip to a tropical country once and although he felt and saw them biting him loads of times, he didn't get a single visible or itchy reaction. Whereas I got huge red bites the size of 50p pieces from every single one. So you might just be unlucky and are more allergic to flea/bedbug/mite bites than the rest of your family.

Zaphodsotherhead · 27/09/2017 10:54

Wearing loads of clothes won't help against flea bites! They can get inside your clothes and then get trapped and bite more - try not wearing so many clothes and socks etc.

Put fipronil on your dog and, once he's treated, let him lie in the bedroom. He will attract the fleas to him and once they bite him they will die. It's got to be chemical flea killer, all that stuff from the supermarket will repel fleas but it won't kill them.

To check if it is fleas, put a cup of warm water on the floor in your room. The warmth attracts the fleas and you will see them floating in the water. They are nasty buggers and it's hell getting rid of them!

AllToadsLeadToHome · 27/09/2017 10:54

Johnsons is rubbish. You need Indorex or Acclaim or similar. Permethrin is the active ingredient in most of the ones that work, but be aware that it isn't great for the nervous system and don't inhale it.

Healthier option is diatomaceous earth but is is dusty.

It might be mosquitos/midges.

RB68 · 27/09/2017 10:56

It cld be mozzies. try holiday anti bug spray, keep windows closed for a few days and see how it goes. I would also take some piriton etc. Its extra mild and damp and they are on last legs hopefully. I heard one in my room last night and they bite me to death as well

Mittens1969 · 27/09/2017 11:01

Not everyone reacts to fleas, OP. I get terrible flea bites, my DH doesn't at all. So I always have to take a lot of care to protect my cats from fleas. It's a ruddy nightmare when one of the cats gets fleas.

anoldiebutagoody · 27/09/2017 11:03

Not sure the flea spray you are using is doing the job. The best one I have found is Indorex spray it is more expensive but usually does the trick. Also get some flea treatment from your vet for the dog, it's usually much better than the supermarket ones.
If it is bed bugs, it is more of a problem apparently they are attracted to you when you exhale- have you seen any black specks in your bed? We bought a new metal bed frame online and it was infested with bed bugs, they only bit DH too. Local council sent someone round to spray our bedroom (after we had gotten rid of the bed) which killed them.

womaninatightspot · 27/09/2017 11:05

I had bedbug bites once it looked like I'd been whipped! Like raised lash marks.

Have you tried smoke bombing the house I've found it to be really effective for fleas?

GingerRogers84 · 27/09/2017 11:10

Our dog recently picked up harvest mites and I was getting bitten constantly. First time I’d heard of them. The only thing that will get rid of them is the frontline spray prescribed by the vet.
Before we realized who the real culprit was, we were treating the house and pets as though it was fleas, without any luck.
Apparently harvest mites come along with the blackberry season.

freshlemons · 27/09/2017 11:18

Might be Scabies? Google it.

Sarahlou031 · 27/09/2017 11:22

Literally seen a black spec on my arm and it started to jump not fly.
It was tiny ..
Is that a flea?

OP posts:
Lweji · 27/09/2017 11:29

That would likely be a flea.

If you get bitten in the night, I'd strip off the whole bed, straight to the washing machine, then strip off all clothes also directly to the washing machine, start a hot (at least 60ºC) cycle and straight to a hot shower.
And spray all possible places with insecticide. Mattress, rugs, sofas, chairs, everything.

SemiNormal · 27/09/2017 11:32

Might be worth getting some of these www.amazon.co.uk/Rentokil-FI65-Insect-Killer-Foggers/dp/B00EHKKSV0/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforum-21 - not tried them myself but I've moved some furniture today and noticed tiny black bugs, not sure what they are and we don't have bites but I'm thinking it will be worth getting these as they appear to kill everything/anything and have some good reviews.

kali110 · 27/09/2017 11:34

fipronil is what fleas are becoming resistant too.
MoSt vers won't sell spot on now ( fipronil is the active ingredient)
Bob martin also used it, a lot of johnsons products also contain it, though i found one that doesn't.

kali110 · 27/09/2017 11:35

Advantage and avocate are the best

hilbil21 · 27/09/2017 11:36

Absolutely indorex it is the only one that works in my opinion

thetemptationofchocolate · 27/09/2017 11:39

Yes that was a flea.
I second the recommendation for Indorex, it's dear but it works. Spray everywhere - soft furnishings, carpets, even tiled floors.
Advocate to put on your pets, that works too.

PurpleTango · 27/09/2017 11:58

Sounds like you have a flea infestation. Flea bombs are the way to go - gets rid of them all in one go instead of faffing about for weeks with sprays etc

You can get flea bombs in pits at home or on sites like Amazon. Good Luck

bookwormnerd · 27/09/2017 12:05

I would agree with indorex as well and lasts for a year. I have also found with treatment comfortis is the best. You can get from vet as pill. You can literally see the fleas dropping off dead within half an hour, as soon as we switched our cats to this treatment we have had no more flea issues. I find its better to go for more expensive treatments as the cheap ones are a false economy as dont work

QuiteChic · 27/09/2017 12:09

Where do you walk your dog ? I get this every autumn, but apparently it's grass mites (and I'm highly allergic to them !) Try using a mosquito repellent on yourself.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/09/2017 12:10

It's fleas!
Indorex for the house- it's cheap on Amazon ,I noticed last night it's down to five something a can and you'll need 2 cans.

Advocate spot on for the animals, you get it from the vet. Wash animal bed in a hot wash and get a flea comb.

QuiteChic · 27/09/2017 12:13

Steam cleaning is highly effective for furniture and mattresses if it is a flea problem and subjects you to less chemicals.

JaneEyre70 · 27/09/2017 12:14

We found the Bravecto tablet from the vet worked in 24 hours with our dog. Wash all your bedding and towels (and the dogs) at 60c, and spray Indorex everywhere. Horrible critters.

Laiste · 27/09/2017 12:31

I just want to repeat what another poster upthread said because it's important.

Once you've treated any host animal with decent flea treatment LET THEM ROAM ALL OVER THE HOUSE!

It's tempting to think 'bloody fleay dog/cat - not letting them in the bedroom again' ect. But once treated they are carrying the poison in their blood and the fleas will only die by biting that treated animal.

Healthy un poisoned fleas can hang around for weeks otherwise, biting humans.

Was reading up about this during the summer when our puss had a few, and a fascinating fact is that cat fleas cannot reproduce when feeding on human blood alone.
