I think it's great to have a post talking about good things about formula for once but part of me feels bad for laughing so much.

Mothers don't express that childbirth is painful.😂

IroningMountain · 28/09/2017 17:18

No pretending that it never hurts stops women from seeking help.

Sayyouwill · 28/09/2017 17:20

I have never read or seen anything ever that says breastfeeding never hurts or is a piece of piss.

speakout · 28/09/2017 17:22

I disagree,

I have seen many women struggle on in terrible pain because they think it's normal.

IroningMountain · 28/09/2017 17:35

www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/breastfeeding-first-days.aspx

When I had my first not one leaflet, book or NHS worker mentioned the realities. Still don't seem to.

tiktok · 28/09/2017 17:35

Am I on the same planet? Who pretends breastfeeding 'never hurts'? I have seen posters saying that for them, it wasn't painful, but who would say it 'never' hurts? I mean, it is absolutely accepted that breastfeeding can hurt like a bitch. It's one of the most common complaints about it. It hurt me like ker-azy for weeks, with each of my three.

I got help and it sorted itself out. Most people in BF support know full well BF can be painful and difficult, and they want to ensure more women get the right sort of help to make it NOT painful and difficult.

I suppose some classes and some books might say nothing about the pain, but they must be drowned out by the sound of women shouting 'aaaaaagggggh' and weeping with it.

tiktok · 28/09/2017 17:37

Ironing, there is a page linked to from that link which covers BF problems, including sore nipples and mastitis.

BertrandRussell · 28/09/2017 18:09

"When I had my first not one leaflet, book or NHS worker mentioned the realities. Still don't seem to."

You did notice the list of possible problems at the bottom of the page?

I saw a post the other week where someone said it doesn't hurt if you are doing it properly, I think many people would disagree though!

Clearly someone with no experience of inverted or flat nipples, tongue tie, stubborn baby who won't or can't take enough of the breast, letdown pain, thrush, mastitis....

It's arsehole comments like that that can cause so much harm. 'You're doing it wrong.' So helpful.

IroningMountain · 28/09/2017 18:32

Yeah tucked away as an after thought in a link as if it's unusual to have problems. Why not at the top, listed in clear view?

I don't know anybody who picked up their newborn and breast fed without problems.

YANBU!

I found myself nodding as I read through that blog post!

Yeah tucked away as an after thought in a link as if it's unusual to have problems. Why not at the top, listed in clear view?

Because it's explaining how it works, what to do, etc, narrative style - the same as just about any instruction guide or user manual. Troubleshooting is almost always at the end. Check you've got the basics right, then move onto the specific problem.

The information is there, and more importantly it's the top link if people google 'breastfeeding problems'. Very few people actually browse websites for info any more - they use search.

However it's there, it's clearly signposted, and it's accessible by search. It exists. It has shortcomings, particularly in listing by solution/diagnosis rather than problem/symptom, and it misses stuff, but we've already established the NHS isnt particulary shit hot at breastfeeding support.

I don't know anybody who picked up their newborn and breast fed without problems.

I do, quite a lot. Unfortunately I wasn't one of them, but I'm pleased for them.

tiktok · 28/09/2017 18:46

Ironing you are just being perverse.

I: no one ever says bf hurts

MN: yes they do!

I: I have never seen it. Look here's an NHS link which doesn't! ([link to very short introduction to bf with tips on getting it off to a good start]

MN: but it links to a page called 'bf problems' which says it can hurt!

I: bah! The link was not in the headline!

MN: collective eye roll.

Headofthehive55 · 28/09/2017 18:48

And I know no one who had problems breastfeeding within my friendship group it seemed to be an enjoyable activity.

tiktok · 28/09/2017 18:48

Ironing, problems with bf are common. Not universal but very common. All of us agree. What's your point????!

TurquoiseDress · 28/09/2017 18:49

Ah, I've not RTFT- it's 24 pages! Shock

Headofthehive55 · 28/09/2017 18:50

If it were such a difficult activity it's a wonder that the human race has survived.

TurquoiseDress · 28/09/2017 18:50

I appear to have arrived in the cross-fire!

Headofthehive55 · 28/09/2017 18:51

Are you not more in danger of putting people off trying to breastfeed by telling them it's going to hurt and it's difficulty?

IroningMountain · 28/09/2017 18:51

I honestly don't. Interestingly none of us discussed it at the time. Years later it was apparent the effortless image portrayed wasn't a reality.

Yes you can search but I think there should be more honesty in promotion material. If girls grew up thinking it was probably wasn't going to be like it is pictured in idilic photos they'd be far better prepared and more realistic when learning. I generally prepare myself far better for things when I know in advance there will be hurdles.

Dustbunny1900 · 28/09/2017 18:53

I picked up both my new babies and bf without problems (except for a clogged duct or two I got out rather quickly). It's been an amazing and easy experience for me with incredible benefits. But saying so makes me look like a smug douche so I keep my mouth shut. Doubt I'm the only one

IroningMountain · 28/09/2017 18:56

Not a MN collective eyeroll,yours.Hmm

Seem to be posts following yours saying the opposite.

I didn't know problems were common,it wasn't that long ago. I read widely.
