to fucking hate exercise?

Just HATE exercising. I know it's good for your health and blablabla but fuck me I find it dull. I wish I was someone who enjoyed it.

The only thing I really do is walking because I don't drive so it fits into what I'm doing anyway - eg walking into town rather than taking the bus. And I don't actively enjoy that either, just don't actively hate it.

Hate running, hate aerobics of any sort including zumba (I'm SO uncoordinated), quite like swimming so I do that occasionally but our nearest pool isn't very easy to get to, can't cycle for the same reason I can't drive, hate the sodding gym, HATE yoga and pilates.

Anyone else just a lazy fucker at heart? Or am I being VVU and exercise is amazing and I just haven't discovered that yet?

I sympathise. However, I must admit I do enjoy walking and try to get a long walk each weekend. In my previous job I used to be able to walk to walk which was just over a mile away so I figured that over 2 miles walking a day wasn't bad exercise. Unfortunately that is not really an option now.

Is there anywhere nice you might take a stroll in your lunch hour?

I don't care for swimming. Well I can't actually and I take no pleasure in being in the water. Not unless it is abroad in summer when I can just float around with something nice and bouyant to hold on to!

I also tried exercise classes. I used to think that exercising to music sounded nice. However, when I tried it was some god awful loud disco beat and the instructor at the front calling instructions I could hardly hear. Everyone else knew all the moves and I just felt like a fool trying to copy everyone else and keep up with them.

Tainbri · 26/09/2017 13:06

Hate it too! Would rather stick pins In my eyes than do any kind of group activity. Do walk, take her stairs etc. I did buy a Fitbit though and try to do 10,000 steps a day as a goal but I don't even break into a jog let alone run Blush

ParsnipLeekAndLemonSoup · 26/09/2017 13:06

I work from home so I genuinely have no excuse not to exercise, none at all.

One of my hardcore gym bunny mates pointed out smugly there was no point walking if you didn't break a sweat Hmm

So you like walking and swimming. That isn't a bad start. I have very limited time to exercise and find that diet is far more important anyway for weight loss/control. I'm on weight watchers and have lost 20lbs with another 35lbs to go. Incorporating walking into my daily routine has been enough to get things going.

Tainbri · 26/09/2017 13:12

There is point in walking. The heart foundation recommends it. It's movement and has health benefits and is definitely better than lying in the sofa with a glass of wine (my preferred choice Grin)

Nicknacky · 26/09/2017 13:16

I swear by crossfit. Varied, never gets repetitive and the movements are all quite basic although there is advanced levels. Definitely gets results.

ParsnipLeekAndLemonSoup · 26/09/2017 13:17

I have tried crossfit

No one can say I haven't given things a go ;)

Nicknacky · 26/09/2017 13:21

How long do you stick at it before you try something else, just out of interest?

gorygloria · 26/09/2017 13:27

I did enjoy the weight loss I achieved by going the gym and consuming only poached eggs, grapefruit and water but exercise bores me shitless. Anyway it's dangerous, have you seen now many places are now offering treatment for sports injuries? Would you go to the supermarket or work if getting injured doing it was such a big risk?? Grin

InvisibleKittenAttack · 26/09/2017 13:27

I also don't like it.

sadly, for your health, being thin via diet isn't enough. So yep, exercise has to be done.

Actually, all the healthy men I know don't go out to exercise, but to do a hobby, at most they'll go to the gym in order to be better at their hobby, but the focus is on something they find fun and as time off.

All the healthy/fit woman I know exercise as an end in itself - just to be healthy. Not because the exercise is part of the hobby, or so they are stronger/better at the hobby, but to be healthy/strong/thin.

I think exercising for health rather than fun is bloody hard. I wish I could find a sporty hobby I like. Sad

OP - what about rambling if you already don't mind walking? If it was getting out into the countryside and enjoying the view or walking to somewhere nice, might you enjoy it more?

ParsnipLeekAndLemonSoup · 26/09/2017 13:32

How long do you stick at it before you try something else, just out of interest?

A long time really! I always give something a go for at least a couple of months before I allow myself to stop.

I was hoping someone was going to come on here and say "Hey OP - 10,000 steps a day is all you need - that's fine!"

No one? Anyone?!

OP posts:
ParsnipLeekAndLemonSoup · 26/09/2017 13:33

And yes I could ramble and do when we can get out of London but I can't do that every weekend, I simply haven't got time (genuinely).

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 26/09/2017 13:37

For me it depends what you want to achieve. Walking 10000 steps a day is better than sitting on the sofa but isn't enough for me and wouldn't have much of an effect on my fitness levels.

I like sweat, challenging myself, pushing myself to the best of my ability and seeing my body and fitness change.

But i think if you are doing it because you feel you have to do something then you will struggle to find something you enjoy enough. But if you are just looking to walk, then that's perfectly ok too.

coddiwomple · 26/09/2017 13:38

I think exercise for the sake of exercising is not great to start with. You just need to find the right thing for you, then it does become pretty addictive. I have seen exercise haters suddenly click - doing various things - and ending up competing and training for a few hours every day!

If you don't like it, you don't like it but it's such a generic term that it sounds a bit over the top to put everything in the same bag.

MephistophelesApprentice · 26/09/2017 13:40

I hate exercise and do it because I have to, so I'm with you there.

For me part of the difficulty is exercising in public, or where people can see me. Combination of ASD and PE lesson trauma means that gyms are right out and jogging is only possible in the dark.

Oh, and all that runners high stuff is bullshit put about by people who've never had a real high. Might as well try and get buzzed standing up sharply. Only purpose to exercise is to be attractive to the opposite sex, imo.

ParsnipLeekAndLemonSoup · 26/09/2017 13:40

I'm not looking for any end goals really nick, I just want to somewhat mitigate my chances of dying of heart disease or a stroke.

Weight loss no, diet is key to maintaining my weight loss for me.

I like sweat, challenging myself, pushing myself to the best of my ability and seeing my body and fitness change.

None of those things thrill me Grin.

I am like you OP, I hate exercise of all types and always have done until I started doing Taekwondo. Turns out I love doing martial arts because I am frankly great at hitting people and learn self-defence.

However, if you are walking and don't fancy anything else then I don't see the problem - more exercise than I am doing at the moment.

RubyWho · 26/09/2017 13:43

I hate most excercise apart from: Treadmill (recent, used to hate it), yoga (because our instructor is hilarious, I'm crap at it) and weights.

I am massively lazy. But I do like doing the above things. I do them because they're out of my comfort zone and found I do actually enjoy them. Took a while though.

For the record, runner's high is most definitely real! Running works for me because I have an addictive personality so now I'm addicted to the high (instead of the ciggies.... Although I do still miss them) I think walking is considered v good exercise mentally and physically isn't it? I'm no expert though. Agree with others that gyms, classes, yoga etc are all torture. Sounds like you are doing OK though op, but like I saw, I'm no expert! Maybe buy an energetic dog that needs walking twice a day, that'll get you out hail rain and shine, whether you like it or not! (possibly not an option in London though....)

moonlight1705 · 26/09/2017 13:49

Its great OP - talk about relieve the tension and stress. I also had a back problem and its helping sort out my flexibility and core strength...........this is me talking who hated every minute of exercise before!

You get to break boards as well Grin

RosaDeZoett · 26/09/2017 13:50

*like I say....
