For not wanting to stay overnight at works doo

Redadmiralflyer · 25/09/2017 18:24

Colleagues are arranging a works doo for Xmas. I was up for a night out thinking it was going to be fairly local so I could have a meal, few drinks and a laugh with colleagues and get a taxi home when I want.
Everyone have decided the work doo is going to be over an hour's commute away in the train, overnight in a hot.
I don't want to go for the following reasons

  • don't want to travel home with a hangover
  • don't want to share a room with colleagues as I know I won't be able to sleep for feeling awkward or snoring
  • I suffer from ibs and if I get a flare up I will be stuck there holding in farts all night or even worse letting them go and getting a name for myself
  • I can't just leave when I want to leave, I will need to go back to the hotel room.

I feel like the only person who feels like this and everyone else is up for it. Aibu to say i can't make it or am I being a miserable old fart?

Sounds like my worse nightmare. I wouldn't go.

hardheadedwoman · 25/09/2017 18:26

Do you have to share rooms? If so - horrific!

kuniloofdooksa · 25/09/2017 18:27

I agree it sounds grim but I would either stump up extra to have a private hotel room or leave I'm time to get the last train home (feigning an early morning appointment possibly?)

Gizlotsmum · 25/09/2017 18:27

Would you have to share a room? We do an over nighter for our Xmas works do and all have our own room, can leave when we want and retire early if necessary.

RedSkyAtNight · 25/09/2017 18:27

An hour's not that far away - can't you just go for the first part of the evening, and then head home? Find it hard to believe all your colleagues will be staying over.

kuniloofdooksa · 25/09/2017 18:27

I'm=in

SweetChickadee · 25/09/2017 18:27

The only person I share hotel rooms with it DH. Not a chance.

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 25/09/2017 18:28

I think it would be odd if you had to share hotel rooms. No one would do that surely

0utForAWalkBitch · 25/09/2017 18:28

Grim. NOPE.

Redadmiralflyer · 25/09/2017 18:30

It's part of a package so wouldn't be able to just go without paying to stay over night. Yes it's twin rooms.
Only one other person has said no for other reasons.

Really sorry to drip feed but it's just ladies too

Pay to stay overnight but travel home that night anyway

Pay to stay but request a single room (even if at a supplement)

But please don't spell it "doo" (it's "do")!!

CockacidalManiac · 25/09/2017 18:32

No way would I be sharing a room!

Slimthistime · 25/09/2017 18:32

are you saying they'll only pay for shared rooms? That seems fair if they are paying

but if you just don't want to then say that you don't want all the inconvenience. I would be surprised if you were the only one but even if you are....I think arranging a do in a place that obliges you to stay overnight is a bit strange anyway.

(aside - why do people on MN say works "doo"? is it another in joke I missed?)

MissionItsPossible · 25/09/2017 18:37

Ugh, no, definitely not. YANBU. Will it be awkward if you just say you don't want to go somewhere so far away so won't be joining them this time? You wouldn't have to say all the reasons you said here if it did. If it would make it awkward regardless, then make up a reason why you can't go but do it sooner rather than later because although a sudden emergency would be more realistic, it would be VU to do that the day before/few days before the event.

BackforGood · 25/09/2017 18:37

No, it doesn't sound like my kind of 'dooo' either. So I'd just say 'sorry I can't make it' and leave it at that.
If anyone was really interested, then I'd tell them why I didn't want to go (as in, didn't want to stay over and then too far to travel home) so the arrangements might be different next year, but that can be a bit awkward without making it sound like you are criticising the organiser.
I'm not going to my works do this year again because the arrangements don't appeal to me, but I thanked the organiser for taking on the thankless task that is arranging it, and commended her for not offering a choice but just saying 'it is this time, this place, who wants to come?'

FannyWisdom · 25/09/2017 18:40

YABU.
What's a Doo?
could skip one or two but...

Moose23IsHungry · 25/09/2017 18:41

Another question about "doo", I have seen people outside of MN use this term and it confuses me.. is it a real word?

Sounds crap to share a room, it's not a school camp. I'd either see if I could get a lone room if there's an odd number, pay an upgrade to stay alone, or travel home late. But I like my workplace (who would never make us share anyway).

CockacidalManiac · 25/09/2017 18:41

What's a Doo?

It’s a dog that investigates ghosts.

Slimthistime · 25/09/2017 18:49

Cockacidal wins the thread Grin

Slimthistime · 25/09/2017 18:51

sorry saw your update

they only have twin rooms?

Would you want to go if you stayed in your own room?

I don't share rooms either. I have raging insomnia and there's nothing worse than listening to people sleep and having to be quiet. In fact, I'll never forget one friend telling me I made her wake up several times "because I could sense you being awake"!!

So that's one option I guess. I don't think work parties are worth all the angst unless you're a very senior person who "has" to attend?

ringthelandline · 25/09/2017 18:53

It would be perfectly reasonable to offer a bit more and pay the single room supplement. I bet if you do lots of others will follow suit.

Or make a fictitious reason why you have to be up early and leave at 11pm.

Don't go because you should.

19lottie82 · 25/09/2017 18:54

Just get the last train home?

JigglyTuff · 25/09/2017 18:55

I shared a room once with a colleague and she brought another (married) colleague back to the room and I ended up on the sofa. Not impressed - never again Angry

Viviennemary · 25/09/2017 18:57

If you don't want to go then don't. But you could ask for a single room if you don't want to share and pay the extra. But sounds as if you're not that keen. Just give it a miss.
