To go into work with an upset stomach?

Not to be TMI, but 2 lots. With stomach cramps...? I don't have any bowel issues. Might need to go again, but it isn't constant and work in a supermarket, so not too bad.

Of course you shouldn't go in and you know it. You wouldn't have asked if you had no doubts.

And King, under no circumstances should you go in - the will have to get agency staff or something in. You need to stay home, it's ridiculous to even contemplate going in and of course they can't sack you for it.

tehmina23 · 24/09/2017 15:45

Your colleagues won't appreciate d&v which they will catch unless you bleach the entire toilet after use & don't touch anything.

I would be very pissed off if a colleague made me ill.

LoislovesStewie · 24/09/2017 15:45

If you have some sort of stomach upset then for the love of god stay home! If you go to work and get worse you may well be sent home hopefully before you can infect others. and yes I do realize germs are everywhere but please use some commonsense!

HarriRose · 24/09/2017 15:46

@tehmina23 I'm the only CA in and the team leader is male. The shop is cleaned at midnight before it opens again in the morning.

OP posts:
Bratsandtwats · 24/09/2017 15:47

You MUST wait until you are 48 hours CLEAR of your last symptom. Whether it's just vomiting, just diarrhoea or both.

Bratsandtwats · 24/09/2017 15:48

Lack of cover at work is not your problem.

tehmina23 · 24/09/2017 15:50

Is the staff toilet cleaned? If you have to go in & you use it, you must make sure it's cleaned with bleach so no other staff get ill.

LoislovesStewie · 24/09/2017 15:51

I think I am in despair ! Commonsense is not being applied and this is how illness spreads; you will touch other items and run the risk of infecting lots of other people. PLEASE think of other people who may get very, very ill if what you have is infectious. You don't know if it is or not and it's best to err on the side of caution.

Snap8TheCat · 24/09/2017 15:57

You do have a choice. Just not one you are prepared to exercise.

ShowMePotatoSalad · 24/09/2017 15:59

You shouldn't go in. If you are feeling better you should work from home.

NetRunner · 24/09/2017 16:00

Ffs... OP -AIBU? Mumsnet -Yes, you are! OP -No, I'm not and I'm going to do what I want anyway since, actually, I only asked for validation and am already convinced I know best... Hmm.

Just because YOU only had diarrhoea twice doesn't mean that's how the bug will affect someone else.

Hiphopopotamus · 24/09/2017 16:03

I think people don't actually understand what it's like for work for shit employers and no sickness cover. Get mad at the system, not the people dragging themselves in when they'd far rather be in bed.

Especially poor King who did call in sick and was told to come in anyway. Who wants to pay her rent and bills when she's sacked?

Hiphopopotamus · 24/09/2017 16:05

FFS potatosalad the OP works in a supermarket? How can she do that from home? Get some dolls out and play shops?

Aeroflotgirl · 24/09/2017 16:06

I would stay at home, its just not worth the risk.

Cantusethatname · 24/09/2017 16:10

You know what, this makes me think twice about shopping in bloody Tesco if this is the way its staff think.

And as for the care home person - Typhoid Mary, anyone?

FairNotFair · 24/09/2017 16:11

Do people honestly believe that someone with an upset stomach(from foor or bug) actually enjoys having to work in those conditions, just for shits and giggles?

BoysofMelody · 24/09/2017 16:15

I think I am in despair ! Commonsense is not being applied and this is how illness spreads; you will touch other items and run the risk of infecting lots of other people.

I'm pretty sure most people are aware how illness spreads, but are placed in an unenviable position of having to ignore the advice as they're either having their arm twisted up their back by unscrupulous employers or simply cannot afford to lose at least two days pay or face going through disciplinary action over their sick record and the threat of dismissal.

All well and good saying 'Don't go in' if you have a permanent contract, full time hours and earn enough that you can build up a cushion so that you can take a hit on two days wages, but for most people in retail that isn't the case.

ljny · 24/09/2017 16:16

You do have a choice. Just not one you are prepared to exercise.

Realistically, Op can exercise the choice to be sacked.

To everyone posting 'this is how illness' spreads, of course it is!
I don't know what the answer is. Support unions.? Become politically active?

Posters blaming Op for going in - check out your own privilege. Be grateful you can go sick without risking your job. And those of us who could work from home - we inhabit a universe far, far away.

Cantusethatname · 24/09/2017 16:20

But we're talking Tesco. Tesco must have sickness pay, D&V policies, food handling and safety guidelines. They must do.

If a care home resident gets D&V the home is shut to visitors and new admissions until 48 hours after the last person displays symptoms. I cannot believe in all honesty that any home will allow a worker to come in and spread D&V around. If they will, this should be reported to CQC.

JonSnowsWife · 24/09/2017 16:21

Of course people understand what it's like to work for shit employers, gosh I've worked for a few in my time.

People also understand how it can affect people with autoimmune issues. Someone who brought their kid in with swine flu so they didn't miss Santa passed it on to another child in the class who spent two weeks in intensive care with it.

OP. Regardless of the rights and wrongs of going in or not. How on earth can it be practical? DD once missed out on a special graduation because she was on some very strong antibiotics which did the inevitable. No way would she have lived that down had she had an accident.

WishingCarrot · 24/09/2017 16:22

A care home should get agency staff in to cover joffreys shift - they just don't want to pay the fees. So joffrey feels she must go in, as concerned about job security, and care home are saving money on emergency staffing. What would care home do if joffrey was run over by a bus??!!

Snap8TheCat · 24/09/2017 16:23

Actually not for me. I’m self employed. If I don’t wines I don’t get paid. I am a cm so can’t work with d and v I wouldn’t expose the children to it. And of course if I am too often clients will go elsewhere. So no I don’t have an understanding employer who still pays me even when I’m ill but I still don’t spread my fucking germs to all those around me. Awful behaviour.

tehmina23 · 24/09/2017 16:24

Tesco are actually very nasty when ppl are off sick from what I've heard.

Personally I get paid sick leave but get sickness meetings etc etc for being off sick.... but as I work on a ward I still wouldn't go in as d&v is a nightmare for immobile patients.

mumofone234 · 24/09/2017 16:26

You really shouldn't go. What if you hand money over to a mother who gets it and passes it on to a vulnerable young baby? Or an older person with compromised immunity? You could make someone seriously ill.
