To think my boss should announce my new position as manager??!!

Herewegoharry · 22/09/2017 21:28

Have just been promoted and all has been signed and sealed.

Went for what I thought was going to be a meeting with all the staff regarding the new structure and how we move forward.

My balloon was well and truly burst when my now stepping up to Manager was not even mentioned once and i could tell not one person had any idea that i was now the manager. WTF!!

Why on earth wouldnt this be brought up and announced? How am i supposed to manage my staff when they have no idea that I am their manager? How would you deal with this

To be honest, I did envisage some teething problems but not this one Confused.

I seriously want to revoke my signing of the contract and go back to my old position, (which I could do). What a crappy start to what was supposed to be a wonderful new beginning.

Maybe they have been told? Just without a fanfare?

LouHotel · 22/09/2017 21:32

Could it be another person in your team also went for the position and hasnt been notified yet?

Also ask your boss when it will be announced but make it clear you would like an official announcement.

whirlyswirly · 22/09/2017 21:32

Congratulations on the promotion. Try not to overreact and speak to your line manager to find out what happens next.

It's very hit and miss how things are announced where I am. I haven't seen an organisation chart in years and have had two promotions which people have probably only noticed because my email signature changed.

Your team need to know you're their line manager though - there may be all sorts of reasons it wasn't appropriate to announce it in front of the whole organisation but it clearly needs to be communicated somehow.

Just ask.

namechangedforthisreply · 22/09/2017 21:33

Congratulations.

Did you ask your manager after the meeting why your promotion was not announced?

I would guess there are other structural changes yet to be announced, is that possible? So perhaps other promotions or role changes?

AlternativeTentacle · 22/09/2017 21:33

What did he say when you asked when it is going to be announced?

Katescurios · 22/09/2017 21:33

You need to arrange a meeting with your staff and introduce yourself as their manager.

1:1s with everyone to establish a baseline of how you will be understanding their roles, setting/continuing objectives, development plans etc and establish how you intend to communicate with the team and what your expectations are of them.

You are the manager now and have to act that way, its not necessary for you to be announces by anyone else.

Congratulations on your promotion, it will I'm sure be challenging at times but also very rewarding.

Herewegoharry · 22/09/2017 21:34

defo not been told. There are a couple who without fail wold mention it to me. I dont care about the fanfare. I care about not being able to manage my team, do my job, if they think im still in my previous job.

Thanks for all the congrats. I actually feel totally miserable now and like the main boss doesnt have my back. I am seriously thinking of back tracking and cancelling the whole changeover

OP posts:
blueshoes · 22/09/2017 21:36

He may not have thought about it. I have some abysmal managers in the past.

Just ask him when he intends to make the announcement and that you cannot move forward with your team until he does it.

OlennasWimple · 22/09/2017 21:44

Did you have a name change fail there, OP?

This would be a really silly thing to cause you to backtrack and lose the promotion, IMHO. Clearly everyone needs to know about the change in line management, but there may have been a reason for the staff meeting not being suitable for the announcement.

whirlyswirly · 22/09/2017 21:47

Look, I mean this kindly but you are going to need to toughen up a little. Managing others can be brilliant and also the most thankless task and you need to develop resilience to all sorts of situations.

your manager obviously thinks well enough of you to promote you, this is just detail. Don't dwell on it, just sort on Monday and try to be as positive as you can about suggesting how you can move forward.

Herewegoharry · 22/09/2017 21:47

Yes epic fail!

I hate change at the best of times and my emotions are going from really excited to terrified as it is. I'm looking for any excuse to do what i always do and pull back

OP posts:
whirlyswirly · 22/09/2017 21:48

I do that too. It's self destructive. You'll be fine!! Smile

StarfishSeahorse · 22/09/2017 21:51

It's sounds like you're throwing a massive strop and being a bit over dramatic about a minor miscommunication, why don't you just ask when your team will be notified and decide your reaction from there.
You don't even know why it wasn't announced yet you're throwing your toys out the pram already and thinking about cancelling your promotion.
Calm down! Are you sure you're cut it for management? You seem a bit highly strung.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 22/09/2017 21:54

I would just have assumed that other people on the team went for it and perhaps hadn't been told it was now unavailable yet

Do you really want the management job?, it seems to me that you aren't thick skinned enough?.

OnionKnight · 22/09/2017 22:21

If I were you I'd go back to your previous role, you are nowhere near thick skinned enough to be a manager if this minor blip is making you react like this.

CantSleepClownsWillEatMe · 22/09/2017 22:34

Oh look you'll be fine as a manager, ignore the digs here. Some people just can't resist doling out a kick in the ribs to a stranger on the internet, probably the highlight of their Friday night Hmm. In my experience it's the uber confident new to the role managers that crash and burn...

Talk to your boss. Don't make a production of it or be embarrassed/apologetic. Just ask when/how he intends to announce this. My experience has always been an email to the department from the main department head, usually along the lines of "I'm delighted to announce Clowns appointment to x post effective from(date). We wish her every success, I'm sure you'll all be supportive yada yada.

Op If you've not managed a team before then yes, it's a learning curve. It does "toughen you up" in the sense that you now have to consider things from a management perspective where in the past you possibly weren't and didn't need to be aware of the more high level stuff. That takes a bit of time but don't worry about it and don't walk away, you might kick yourself later for missing the opportunity. Plus you could end up with some right numpty managing you instead! Grin

Parker231 · 22/09/2017 22:37

Did you speak to your manager about your promotion being made public? Usually an email will do the job.

WiseDad · 22/09/2017 22:58

katescurios nails it. The perhaps someone else hasn't been told they don't get it point might be true as well.

Only thing I can add is recall all the good and bad managers you have had in the past. They are not you and only you can make a go of this but the past will affect how you manage. Don't overcompensate to avoid being "bad" or chase being "good" too hard.

You don't say how senior you are nor how experienced the team but just remember the first team is the hardest one to manage as it's all new. Just remember you got their on merit, announcements are short term, your behaviour long term matters more.

bianglala · 23/09/2017 01:13

Its understandable that you are feeling all sorts of emotions and want to prove to your boss you can perform, but I do think you are overreacting. I was in the same situation a few months back mine was announced but as I'm quite new some people chose not to comgratulate me and even tried to make my job harder. Managing a team takes time IMO, if you quit now it will reflect badly on you.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 23/09/2017 05:57

Why didn't you just ask him after the meeting? Confused

Runningpear · 23/09/2017 06:01

You need to ask a quick & easy question "when are we announcing my new role as xxx manager?". If it's a non committal answer, ask your boss if they mind if you announce it 'for awareness'.
Don't chuck the towel in already over this, as PP have said you will need to develop a thick skin to be a manager.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 23/09/2017 06:14

Depends on the company but I'd have thought it would be more usual for the other members of staff to be told about a new manager (especially one promoted internally) when not in the presence of the new manager.
A big announcement at a full team meeting would be a bit odd tbh.
If you've already taken on the role, then they already know. If you haven't, then there will be a reason why the other members of staff don't yet know!
When does the role actually start?
