Natural deodorant salt bars?!

They are awesome, they work (even on my sweaty and doubting husband), they are healthier (no breathing in weird chemicals), they last FORVER (one bar has already lasted over a year and I expect it to do another 2, no joke) and therefore they massively reduce both cost and waste. I reckon that using them has prevented us using 40ish aerosols over the last few years.

Try them and spread the love. Salt of the Earth is good, but packing lets it down, my current fave is Native Unearthed.

They are brilliant if you use them correctly. My DS has had one for years now!

However, I don't use it because after a year or so I started to react, dry itchy skin under my arms, inflamed etc.

Saz467 · 22/09/2017 19:20

@Brittbugs80 they are made of potassium alum. They are scentless. The Neal's Yard stuff sounds lovely.

^ Seriously, though, OP, I'm half tempted to try a salt crystal stick. But have heard very mixed reports on how well they do/ don't work.
Will watch this thread with interest.

Saz467 · 22/09/2017 19:22

@SusanTheGentle they are not antiperspirant - they just kill the bugs that cause BO. Works v well for me, but not everyone it seems. I'm not super sweaty but my husband is, and it works for both of us.

RunningOutOfCharge · 22/09/2017 19:25

They don’t work...not for runners. I’ve heard they do nothing for proper workouts

How much are they?

SusanTheGentle · 22/09/2017 19:26

Ah, thanks @Saz467 - it's the damp feeling that bothers me, I'm not naturally very smelly so if it was just that I'm sure they'd be fine, but I hate the clammy feeling!

Tumilnaughts · 22/09/2017 19:27

I started using native unearthed this year. My husband used to complain That the conventional deodorant I was using made me smell 'funky' by the end of the day, he was right. The native unearthed stopped that problem, I love it!

MaidOfStars · 22/09/2017 19:28

I don't breathe through my armpits.

MaidOfStars · 22/09/2017 19:31

I'm guessing that these won't work for someone who does 20k steps a day, plus one or two desicated sessions...

MaidOfStars · 22/09/2017 19:31

Dedicated, obviously. Although in context, desicated works.

picklemepopcorn · 22/09/2017 19:34

It will work if you can apply it thoroughly over the area you sweat. It stops the bacteria which cause the smell, rather than the sweat.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 22/09/2017 19:34

Tried them, made my pits sore and red unfortunately.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 22/09/2017 19:35

Because they don't work.

Lweji · 22/09/2017 19:36

I reckon that using them has prevented us using 40ish aerosols over the last few years.

Have you never realised there are roll on and stick deodorants and anti-perspirants?

Also, they are made of potassium alum

Alum is for aluminium. Which is the main ingredient in anti-perspirants. It's still an aluminium salt, which reacts with acids and bases to release aluminium.

Adelie0404 · 22/09/2017 19:40

I don't use anything - for some reason i never smell. I have asked my family members and no I don't. I can smell my teenage daughters school shirts (phew!) ok so it's not like I don't have a sense of smell. So I shower daily and don't use anything. I had laser to my underarm hair years ago (SO worth it) and wonder if that is why? I do think it is weird. I used to slap on the anti-persp/deoderant without fail. I haven't now for years. And yes I do go the gym too!
So all I'm saying is you might be a non-smelly person too!

EllaHen · 22/09/2017 19:41

I stopped using deodorant when I was breastfeeding dc1 almost 12 years ago. I haven't used it since. Realised I didn't need to.

I wonder how many folk don't need to and don't realise.

Same with conditioner. Although, it took me to my late 30's to figure that one out.

sonjadog · 22/09/2017 19:42

My SofE one cost about 5 pounds. I thought it was a lot at the time, but as it looks like I'll have it a couple of years, it's turning out a bargin.

Fannyfannakerpants · 22/09/2017 19:46

Adelie0404 yes, it will be the lasers. The bacteria live on the hairs so if you don't have hair then you won't smell. That's why people who shave should smell less.

littlecabbage · 22/09/2017 19:50

I don't use anything at all either. Stopped about 3 years ago as sick of white stains on my t-shirt underarms. I have asked my husband and close friends to honestly tell me if I ever smell. I'm pretty sure I don't but then I hardly ever sweat under my arms, even when running. I used Driclor as a teenager and it seems to have permanently stopped me sweating there - hooray!

I saw an episode of Embarrassing Bodies once where they showed how it is a lot to do with genetics as to whether you sweat much, and how much it smells. So yes, some people definitely do need products to stop them smelling.

lljkk · 22/09/2017 19:56

I can usually get away for about 24 hours without anything.
Prefer real deodorant after that, wasn't sure the salt stuff worked in any way.

HidingUnderARock · 22/09/2017 19:57

they are made of potassium alum so when you say natural deodorant salt bars you mean salt in the sense of any chemical compound formed from the reaction of an acid with a base, not like salt that we eat. And natural in the sense that pretty much everything is natural.

Potassium alum is a skin irritant, and was quickly tried and refused by everyone in my family.

If you used spray on deodorant before I am not surprised you find a rub on type better. I like dove invisible dry deodorant stick. It is very low odor and doesn't spoil the underarms of your clothes, although the "invisible" claim is pushing it a bit.

HesAWanker · 22/09/2017 20:00

They don't work for me and I definitely used them properly. I even tried a day with one armpit with sure maximum and one with a salt bar. (I'm not sure which brand - it looked like the salt of the earth ones but it was a different brand.). The result was really clear cut and the Sure won hands down. The reason I tried was that the Sure Maximum Protection is £5 full price and finding an alternative would have saved me a lot of cash.

filou87 · 22/09/2017 20:00

I have Salt of the Earth too. It works better than any deodorant I've ever used, contains no nasties and one stick is lasting ages!

Ecureuil · 22/09/2017 20:02

I know someone who uses them... she really smells. I don't think she can smell it herself, but it's really bad.

eurochick · 22/09/2017 20:14

They don't work on me. The Neal's Yard one sounds good though.
