To think DD shouldn't have been refused entry at the zoo???

DD went to the zoo today (project for her degree) and was asked for ID! They said anyone under 16 needs an adult with them Confused she's 19 in November. She doesn't drive (hence doesn't just carry ID around) and got the coach there and couldn't even get in. Ridiculous.

AIBU?

OP said DD doesn't drive so why would she go out of her way to have I.D on her for the zoo?? Some of the responses on here are silly.

ShutUpBaz · 21/09/2017 20:03

Sorry if you think one of mine is a 'silly' response. I've worked in pubs and restaurants for 14 years and see how much hassle lack of ID causes so my perception could be skewed. Everyone did when I was at uni as well. My bad. Apologies.

sparechange · 21/09/2017 20:04

All of the posters saying she should carry ID around at all times, please can you explain why?

In case she randomly stumbles across a bizarre age-restricted attraction, or for other reasons?

Spooksatthezoo · 21/09/2017 20:05

Surely a pub is very different? There is a law around alcohol.

TabascoToastie · 21/09/2017 20:06

I've never carried ID ever, and I don't know anyone who does.

The only reason to carry ID in this country is if you're young/young looking and want to drink or get into clubs.

AlexanderHamilton · 21/09/2017 20:07

I didn't drink so I'd never have thought to carry ID at that age.

What a ridiculous rule. There is a zoo near to dd's school. I never realised she couldn't go unavompanied if she wanted to.

She'll laugh at it eventually, to get ID'ed at the zoo Grin

Trills · 21/09/2017 20:08

She doesn't have a purse?

That's the strangest bit of the whole story.

ShutUpBaz · 21/09/2017 20:09

Fair enough. I agree there are laws in pubs so its different etc (was simply illustrating that my perception may be skewed) but I just find it strange that someone would carry no ID at all, even a student one for her university. Differing opinions and all that is what AIBU is for, right?

AlexanderHamilton · 21/09/2017 20:10

Uni ID is often a lanyard you wear round your neck not a little card you can carry in your purse or top pocket.

EdmundCleverClogs · 21/09/2017 20:10

It's often worth having some ID at all times. A pain, but some places are really anal about these things. I always get ID'd in my local supermarket for lottery stuff, I'm 30 years old and look it (and then some). What was hilarious today was watching a very large bearded man, at least 5 years older than me being ID'd for a scratch card.

Does she not get ID'd on nights out? My uni town, most places asked for ID at the door, even shitty dives.

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 21/09/2017 20:11

YABU
The zoo has a policy of not letting in unaccompanied under sixteen year olds, which they are at liberty to have and to enforce.
I'm sure it was annoying for your DD but carrying ID such as a NUS card or similar is a good idea and would have allowed her to enter the zoo on this occasion.
It is entirely possible that the zoo has some liability issues that are discharged if a child is with a responsible adult.

Veterinari · 21/09/2017 20:11

If she was doing her degree project at the zoo then surely they knew she was coming and had already arranged her entrance? They must have some arrangement with the Uni for student projects.

SoPassRemarkable · 21/09/2017 20:11

Not much help now but years ago I was refused entry to a castle because I was under 16 and no unaccompanied minors allowed. I just hung round the gate and accosted strangers until someone agreed to pretend to be my responsible adult. I gave them my entry money, I got in and parted ways with my new family!

HerRoyalNotness · 21/09/2017 20:13

Not strange to not have a purse. I hated them and handbags. If I went out I'd take a credit card and my ID and carry in my jeans pocket. I'm low maintenance and didn't need to carry other stuff

Spooksatthezoo · 21/09/2017 20:14

No because it wasn't a project with the zoo. It was about an animal at the zoo, unrelated to the zoo.

OP posts:
Ttbb · 21/09/2017 20:15

Why would she carry ID? She wasn't driving and she wasn't buying alcohol/fags so what could she possibly need it for? Certainly not for go No to the zoo? I recall going alone to zoos well before turning 18. How bizarre.

kali110 · 21/09/2017 20:15

I don't drive, i look very young so ill always have ID.
If they need ID she should have had it.

Spooksatthezoo · 21/09/2017 20:16

But @EdmundCleverClogs those are the law. Yes, she gets IDed in that situation. However, those are for if you are under 25.

OP posts:
endofthelinefinally · 21/09/2017 20:17

Well she has now learned the importance of carrying ID.
It is a shame but such is the way of the world these days.

Spooksatthezoo · 21/09/2017 20:17

And yes her ID gets worn around her neck. Something she wouldn't have when popping to the zoo...

Why's it strange she doesn't have a purse? She never has.

OP posts:
Yukbuck · 21/09/2017 20:18

To the poster who said they don't know anyone who carries ID around with them. I'm assuming none of your friends drive anywhere then? If you are driving somewhere you should always have your ID on you in case of being pulled over by the police or an accident.
Everyone I know carries ID most of the time as standard in their purse. You could have an accident and it's an easy way for hospitals / police to identify you.
I find it odd that people don't have an ID.
Does your dd go out ?

DrKrogersfavouritepatient · 21/09/2017 20:19

But this zoo has a policy that its staff were enforcing. There are no reasonable grounds for you to complain that they should have let her in.

If the rule is not featured anywhere in their literature then I concede it would be reasonable to address that issue with them.

StealthPolarBear · 21/09/2017 20:19

Depressing thought, that we should all carry Id at all times.
