Is this a thing?! And if so WHY WHY WHY
Just got some chips and curry from a chip shop while down the beach and there's SO many lumps of what looks like raisins?! If they're not raisins what are they?

Think I'll be sticking with Chinese or Indian curry sauce from now on Envy

YANBU. Those guys will be first against the wall when I'm in charge 😒

Sooooooooooooooooooooo · 20/09/2017 18:33

I hate sweet and savoury food together and that includes raisins in curry. No thankyou.

n0ne · 20/09/2017 20:09

Coronation chicken must have sultanas in it! But it's not curry. Grapes do not belong in curry, end of.

Nuttynoo · 20/09/2017 20:16

Proper Indian, pakistani, and bangladeshi 'curry' DOES have sultanas in it. Cashews / peanuts / almonds / whole dry spice too. Don't blame the chef when it's the philistines who have never eaten a 'curry' outside of a curry house who are at fault. Hmm

Nuttynoo · 20/09/2017 20:18

@Sooooooooooooooooooooo if you hate sweet and savoury food then you're eating some pretty shit Asian food. All good Asian food mixes sweet, savoury, spicy, hot etc.

existentialmoment · 20/09/2017 20:25

The fruit is more authentic than chips in a curry, surely?

Indeed. Fruit and dried fruit are perfectly normal things to find in an actual curry.
I do a kashmiri curry with banana, mango, sultanas and almonds that is amazing.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 20/09/2017 20:29

I often put potato and sultana in a korma when I cook it at home. Otherwise it's just meat and rice with sauce, it needs some vitamins!

123rd · 20/09/2017 20:31

My mum cooked it like this in the 80s... we don't have it like that now. Thought of it makes me heave

Sooooooooooooooooooooo · 20/09/2017 20:43

You haven't got a fucking clue what I eat. I hate pineapple on pizza, sweet and sour chicken, apple in a salad, any kind of sweet sauce, sweet potato, coconut or a korma. Sweet is for pudding.

The thought of bananas and raisins in a curry makes me heave.

Isn't fruit in savoury a big thing in Turkey, Lebanon, and various places in the middle east ? Dates 'n'stuff ???

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2017 21:20

I also don't like sweet in my savoury and object to fruit in a savoury meal.coconut when it's cooked in the sauce, tomatoes and lemon squeezed over seafood or fish are the only exceptions.

I couldn't eat a Waldorf salad for example as it has grapes in it, I couldn't eat a Hawaiian pizza due to the pineapple, and I don't like curry with raisins or sultanas in it. It's really is just all kinds of wrong.

It's also quite a common dislike, many people don't like fruit in a savoury course.

Bluntness100 · 20/09/2017 21:22

Authentic Asian cuisine does have plenty of nuts and dried fruit in it

Ehrm no, you need to narrow it down from "Asia" Asia is a huge continent with many many culinary styles and thousands and thousands of dishes, many of which do not include nuts or fruit.Hmm

iamyourequal · 20/09/2017 21:26

That makes me nostalgic. I love an old fashioned curry with sultanas in it. Especially if it comes with sliced banana and coconut on the side!

Shelvesoutofbooks · 20/09/2017 21:26

I love banana curry. One of my favorites is a kashmiri chicken one

MothQuandary · 20/09/2017 21:28

Fruit in savoury food is disgusting and wrong. I include sweet and sour, pork with apple sauce and Hawaiian fucking pizza.

The worst thing I ever ate was a venison stew with fucking prunes in. Of course, I am an adult and very polite so I forced it down and made complimentary noises, but I am still scarred by the experience.

I feel VERY strongly about this. Anyone who disagrees is a disgusting food pervert and should seek help.

existentialmoment · 20/09/2017 21:31

you couldn't be more wrong! fruit and meat , sweet and savoury, it's all about contrast. It's perfection.

MothQuandary · 20/09/2017 21:32

Bluntness I will allow your exceptions. You are quite right that lemon and coconut are OK in certain circumstances. And, while technically a fruit, tomatoes are an honorary vegetable on account of being - well, savoury, I suppose.

Germgirl · 20/09/2017 21:32

Our old staff canteen used to do a fruit curry. Banana, pineapple and sultanas in curry sauce. It was vile. I'm not a fan of fruit in curry. I always pick the sultanas out of coronation chicken

Dizzybintess · 20/09/2017 21:32

when I was in secondary, they served curry with sultanas and diced apple in it!! (it wasn't too bad!)
our local chippy does a mild curry and that has raisins too

27Feb · 20/09/2017 21:35

Fruity curry is perfectly normal - my family in India and Sri Lanka use it all the time.

Maybe it's not what you're used to if you've only eaten chicken tikka masala before but it's arguably more traditional.

scottishdiem · 20/09/2017 21:38

Sigh. British people and their aversion to eating foods the rest of the world finds normal is really odd.

Peanut butter rice is fantastic. Roast goat on a bed of freshly picked fruit is great.

Ojoj1974 · 20/09/2017 21:40

My mum always serves her curry with-
Raisins
Peanuts
Banana
Mango chutney
And sliced boiled egg....

I thought it was the norm as a child growing up!!!

There are thousands of varieties of that, OP, and fruit is in rather a few of them.
