Groom asks guests to help pay for wedding
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-41317297www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-41317297

Basically all guests will be paying to go to the wedding so the bride and groom will be paying 2k of their own money and the rest will be paid for by guests..,

I’m not sure whether this is genius or awful. We had a lovely wedding last year but it was all paid for by us and I wonder if they’ll ask for cash instead of gifts 😂

The couple in this article could easily have got married, they just wanted something bigger and grander than they could afford

Exactly

Ceto · 20/09/2017 14:53

Given that it's only £150 for a three night fully catered break at what looks like a nice venue, if I were invited I'd probably go for it. Though I might well work on the basis that that is my wedding present to them.

I recently went to a wedding where the Bridge and Groom asked people to contribute alcohol for the Reception instead of giving presents, I thought that was a great idea.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 20/09/2017 15:10

I can see the logic behind it - but I don't like it.

If you can't afford your dream wedding then either wait until you can or get married at a registry office with a buffet in the village hall afterwards.

As a family of five, we couldn't spend anywhere near £150 each attending a wedding.

Ellapaella · 20/09/2017 15:14

Actually sounds quite sensible and to be honest I'd definitely go - usually spend far more than that to attend a wedding once you've paid for a present, taxi, accommodation etc. Quite a good price for a nice weekend.

Ellapaella · 20/09/2017 15:15

Although they wouldn't be getting a present as well unless they were relatives or very very good friends!

diddl · 20/09/2017 15:22

They are self catering holiday lets aren't they?

I'd rather pay less & sort my own food out!

Jux · 20/09/2017 16:06

Really, they should cut the coat according to the cloth. They don't have gorgeous cloth but they want a gorgeous coat.

In my youth I might have gone, especially as I would probably be the designated person representing my bit of the famly (thus saving parents and siblings from having to go), but I'd be a bit pissed off if all the food, alcohol and things were not included. Most of my relatives would do the same - send one unlucky person to represent them.

"People always pay a large amount of money to go to a wedding anyway..."

People paid for bus/taxi to get to/from mine in the centre of a city not far from where everyone lives, and paid for their drinks, except for people buying specific clothes for the wedding or the gifts, I don't think the people who came to my wedding spent a large amount of money just to go.

I went to a wedding the other week, wore clothes I already had and drove about the 10 minutes to get there, and had a few drinks, and brought a present, didn't cost a large amount. If you want to try rope people into a spa wedding at a swanky country club half way across the country or in Greece, yes, it may cost people large amounts, but that's down to you who organised and chose that.

Agree with the notion, that they wanted something grander than they could afford so have tried to dress it up to something more palatable.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/09/2017 17:27

They are self catering holiday lets aren't they?

They are, yes, and the place can accommodate 90 max, so with 60 adults and 20 children they're obviously going for exclusive use. Knockerdown are notoriously coy about stating prices too, with every webpage saying "contact us for details", so guests couldn't check what they're expected to subsidise even if they wished to

Anyway it's their choice of course ... but wouldn't it be interesting if one of them turned up on MN? Wink Grin

onceandneveragain · 20/09/2017 18:52

it's not really "all inclusive" though is it? All inclusive is as much food and drink as you want for your whole stay, all prepared for you when you want it and no cleaning up to do.

There's allegedly enough money for food for the weekend (although from the amounts stated looks a bit tight), and drink for one day.

What is not stated is a) how many people will be sharing each holiday let and b) who is going to be doing all the cooking and cleaning up of all these meals. Seriously if it's self catering who is going to be cooking for 80 on a budget of a few quid per person, and then who has to do the 80 dishes, cups, glasses and cutlery? What happens if you fancy rice krispies on the second morning but the grooms best mate's step son has already polished them off?

If they lay in thirty bottles of wine there's always going to be that one arse who's downing his third glass while you're still nursing your first.

Some people (the grabbiest and more selfish!)are going to get much better value out of their £150 than others!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 21/09/2017 16:04

I know of one hotel in the Lakes that does a variation on this. You have exclusive use of the venue, and pay for all hotel rooms, then 'sell' them to guests at whatever price you choose. I was looking at the hotel for my wedding, but it seemed a bit under-hand, and gave a problem if not all rooms were booked etc. The wedding couple in this case are being more upfront about it, but it's not without precedent.

diddl · 21/09/2017 18:31

Well yes, it's no different to booking rooms in a hotel & hoping that your guests will stay there & you don't have to pay for what they do book iyswim.

Although if the B&G have put £2000 into it, they could have probably done a different wedding for that!

Purplemac · 21/09/2017 18:34

I wouldn't do it myself but would definitely be up for it as a guest.
