AIBU to think driving a big car is easier than a little car?

I've yet to pass my test (I know, I know) but hope to in the next month or so.

We currently have a fiat 500 but as DC2 arrived this year it's not that practical, although I love it & feel comfortable driving it.

DH & I are Londoners & live 12 mins from the tube/high street & 5 mins from nursery/school so we don't actually drive that much. DH wants to get a big car & sell the fiat. AIBU to think I will struggle to drive a big car? It will be automatic but probably 5 yrs old so not self driving!

Much more stressful to park, generally nicer to drive for long motorway journeys, and people treat you better (don't cut you up as much). I wouldn't buy a big car for driving in London.

blowingraspberries1 · 20/09/2017 14:43

plus we don't have a drive, at least not until we find another million to upsize 😏

G1ggleloop · 20/09/2017 14:46

I had a corsa and then had to trade up to a Renault scenic mum bus when number three arrived. Couldn't park the corsa at all but can park the scenic no problem. I think it's because the seating position is higher so I can see more clearly. I was really scared the first time I drove the scenic but got used to it very quickly

I have a big car (4x4) and much prefer driving bigger ones to smaller ones. It can be a bugger for parking though, and one car I was driving (hire car), I wanted to go through a car wash and the attendant said the car was too wide, I had to do it with a jet wash instead. 😄

JassyRadlett · 20/09/2017 14:55

I grew up in a rural area driving 4x4s and so have always been comfortable with them. DH on the other hand had never driven anything bigger than a hatchback until we were buying our XC60. It was a little adjustment but he loves it now and prefers it.

We chose theXC60 as the crossover 4x4s are shorter than estates, and as we have on street parking that was a factor if we wanted the boot space.

blowingraspberries1 · 20/09/2017 15:12

Does the xc60 fit 3 small kids in? DH really likes the xc90 but I prefer the 60 size.

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 20/09/2017 15:12

Fiats though small have shit engines which mean they're not as receptive so they're actually harder to manoeuvre in my opinion. ( former owner of 2 fiats I loved until I tried my sisters Ford )

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 20/09/2017 15:18

I misread that as 'sell the flat', Jesus how big is the car? Grin I think a bigger, higher car can help with confidence on rural a motorway travel, does for me certainly but then again I live rurally so not sure I'd be so comfortable driving one around certral London if I still lived there.

karalime · 20/09/2017 15:21

Some 'big' cars are smaller than you think and vice versa. My aunts 5 door fiat panda is actually smaller than my 3 door 207 and it's much more practical.

Also 3 doors are a pain in the arse, I don't even have kids and my next car will have back doors.

blowingraspberries1 · 20/09/2017 15:24

judas 😂😂 he wants this

Go with a medium sized hatchback for London if you've got to find parking spaces quite often. Big cars have their pros more if you're regularly on the motorway or in the countryside. Smaller cars are the way to go in a city.

I've just brought the new seat ibiza and it's a beautiful car to drive and very easy to park, so spacious as well, the insurance is v. Cheap as well.

womaninatightspot · 20/09/2017 15:29

I have a fiat for myself/ school run and we run a volvo xc90 for the family stuff. I quite like my fiat it's so cheap to run/repair. That said we'd be lost in the winter without the 4x4. The big car has parking sensors but I tend to park somewhere with loads of room if I can. Lazy!

HappenstanceMarmite · 20/09/2017 15:40

Large/Bigger - e.g. Audi A4, A5, etc , or just taller, like most SUVs? I would say SUVs and small cars are easier to park than large cars. All size cars - depends on how powerful they are. A small powerful car is as easy to drive as a powerful large car and/or SUV. I find the more powerful, the easier/nicer to drive (I'm not talking F1 🙄). An underpowered car is a pig to drive whatever its exterior size.

FunkinEll · 20/09/2017 15:43

We have a xc90 and I love it, so spacious and the intergrated booster is so, so brilliant. If the XC60 do the intergrated booster then it would fit 3 kids easily especially if you eldest is 6+.

If you're going to have another, definitely factor that into your choice would be my advice.

We live in far out west London and I've not had any issues parking the big car around and about.

Possumfish · 20/09/2017 15:49

I have a corsa, a transit for work and dp has an insignia. The corsa is my fav. Fits into tiny spaces! And I'm useless at parking! The van is good for being able to see when on the road....but I hate parking it. And the insignia....just ugh!

JustDanceAddict · 20/09/2017 15:50

Hate driving big cars. My best cars have been a micra and polo. Wouldn't go bigger than polo now.
I live in London too although not that near a tube.

Getout21 · 20/09/2017 15:51

Happen larger in terms of higher, longer & bigger eg xc90/60, x5, Audi Q5/7

funkin eldest is 3.

shhhfastasleep · 20/09/2017 15:52

Good luck with your test.
Afraid to say I always think that big cars are often driven by people who care about themselves and not others when driving.
In UK I see no need to have a care that is bigger than you need, especially in the city.
In US, however, I can’t see how you could manage without a big car. Unlike here the road signage is terrible and most other drivers are hugely inconsiderate. You need the protection of a bigger car. Not in the uk, though.

Chickpearocker · 20/09/2017 15:57

I have a 4x4 I also find it easier to park and drive than my husbands car which is smaller, I've no idea why! Also I'm not the best at driving or parking but seem to manage with the rear camera and sensors.

Ttbb · 20/09/2017 16:03

I find little cars terrifying both to drive and to ride.

PlausibleSuit · 20/09/2017 16:05

I learned to drive in a very big car (ancient Vauxhall Senator, like the police used to have) so I'm used to them and find small cars less fun. Although I did have a Mini for a while the original teensy one, not the BMW pastiche and I did love that.

I found getting used to driving a bigger car helpful as it made me much more confident. I will happily jump into and drive anything now.

Incidentally, I actually think that the Fiat 500 is quite difficult to drive. Because it's so round and it sort of widens out at the bumpers from all angles, so it's tricky to know where the edges are, if you know what I mean. My friend has one and I find it harder to drive than my Saab estate, which is notionally much larger. I'd previously fancied one of the Abarth ones as a sporty weekend plaything but it put me right off!

So if you can drive and park your Fiat you should be able to turn your (driving) hand to anything. Grin

weeblueberry · 20/09/2017 16:08

If you're worried about parking etc just get a bigger car with parking sensors?

We've got an estate (not sure if this is what people mean by big cars or they're thinking SUVs) but I genuinely find it no more difficult to drive/park than the Yaris I used to have. Once you've driven it for a bit and get a feel for the size you're normally golden. However I do admit I'm not in London so don't know how tricky parking is for a larger car there.

SheSaidHeSaid · 20/09/2017 16:44

Happenlarger in terms of higher, longer & bigger eg xc90/60, x5, Audi Q5/7

I'm in the process of looking for a new car. These are on my shortlist too - xc60, Q5, x4 and x5. I also like the x6 but that's lower on the list at the moment for me.

Big cars win over small for me any day, I can't imagine driving a small car again.

Grilledaubergines · 20/09/2017 16:50

Much easier in a bigger car. And more comfortable, better steering, easier to park (not in tiny spaces obviously, but in terms of pulling into spaces/reversing out)

bridgetreilly · 20/09/2017 17:21

Well, I drive a Corsa on the motorway pretty regularly. It's perfectly fine. I think a lot of people driving bigger cars are over-confident and in danger of being reckless in the way they drive. I would love something with a bit better acceleration, but only because I think that would be fun.
