To take a photo of bank balance

We have sold our house, the one we are buying is not ready for another 2/3 weeks, so staying with family for a few weeks.

The equity from our house goes into my account on Friday, and I feel like a kid at Christmas! Can not wait till Friday to take a photo of my bank balance, not to show anyone but it's the biggest amount I've had in it so far.
It won't be in there long as we using it for the new house. My bank will wonder what on earth ha!

Am I silly to be so excited for Friday?!

I phoned up the bank for the balance 😀
Then I transferred it all to a different account.

flownthecoopkiwi · 18/09/2017 14:39

i remember going to the bank to pay off £x0k off our mortgage in one go... that felt good.

PovertyPain · 18/09/2017 14:49

Amazing how nice the bank is to you when you have a lot of money in the bank. Thankfully I refused to listen to my solicitor, when he insisted that the very large amount of money that was going to pay off the mortgage, HAD to go through him, first. He insisted we had to send it through him to prevent accusations of money laundering. 🤔😒 I asked the bank for advice and they were horrified and practically demanded his name. Turns out he was under investigation for defrauding his clients! 😱

SoupDragon · 18/09/2017 14:56

I did it when my divorce settlement came through :)

Leavingonajet · 18/09/2017 14:58

When this happened to me the bank phoned up to talk to me, they couldn't have been nicer to me 😜

meg54 · 18/09/2017 14:59

Madwife,
Do advise the bank that you are expecting the money, otherwise it will flag up all sorts of alarms for them. It is not unheard of for banks to move large sums out of private accounts into a 'holding' account for unexpected large sums.
Enjoy!

gillybeanz · 18/09/2017 15:05

Take a picture of the whole amount of the sale before deposit goes out, not just the equity.

larry55 · 18/09/2017 15:18

When we sold our last house we were not buying until later in the year so we were moving into a rented house. The sale completed at 3 15 on a Friday afternoon and the bank closed at 3 30 so I almost ran round the corner to the bank to make sure it went through on time. The joint account then held the most money it ever had in it.

madwifenewlife · 18/09/2017 15:57

Yes I've warned my bank, so fingers crossed. Our solicitor did offer to keep it for 2/3 weeks I declined his offer. I want to see it!!

Equity is part of the deposit, but it's all going into my bank until the house is ready.

Since I have had a significantly large bank balance my Bank manager cant wait to meet me - has sent me numerous personal letters requesting an appointment. I have banked with them for 30+ years and now I'm their new best friend :)

Buxtonstill · 18/09/2017 16:12

When we bought our house in 1993, I had to get the deposit (£10k) to our solicitor on the Friday before a bank holiday weekend. Bank Transfers then took days and we had a limited time to complete the sale. I withdrew it in cash from the building society, went into the nearest loos, and safety pinned the envelope to the inside of my bra. (Luckily I have big boobs, it wasn't noticable). I then got the tube from central London to our solicitors in Brixton and walked through the town centre, crapping myself that I would get mugged and the money stolen....

Dugg · 18/09/2017 16:34

I went on a school trip to a bank and they let me hold £30,000 in cold hard cash. In my actual hands. Was well excited 😂

wonkylegs · 18/09/2017 16:37

I kept the debit card receipt from my 1st car as it was the largest purchase I ever bought on my card, it felt ridiculous but awesome at the same time.

Fluffy40 · 18/09/2017 16:42

I sold my car for £1000 cash. I took a pic of all the notes !

SocksRock · 18/09/2017 16:48

The last time I sold a house, we had a month before the money was needed again. So solicitor sent us a cheque for the equity rather than paying for CHAPS. I had to cash a cheque for £53,000, was the best feeling ever!

saltandvinegarcrisps1 · 18/09/2017 16:52

Go for it - get it made into a t shirt! I remember buying my first flat - had to write a cheque for £99, 000.00. Felt soooo anxious but excited doing It!

saltandvinegarcrisps1 · 18/09/2017 16:56

On a side note. I went to shopping centre last week and the guy who does the little push cars for kids was at the cashpoint in front of me. He left his balance query slip in the machine and I looked - he had nearly 200 grand in It!! I'm definitely in the wrong job!

hiccupgirl · 18/09/2017 17:05

Def keep the money in your bank account, not the solicitors!

We moved 10 years ago when interest rates were a lot higher than now and had 4 months renting between selling and buying again. The interest on the deposit sat in my bank account paid for our holiday that year. No wonder the solicitor had kindly offered to look after it for me!

Yes I told him il keep it in my bank it's over £50k so no way I'm trusting anyone else with it. Plus if anything happens with this house it's in my bank and mortgage amount is in an account ready so I can just jump on another house if I need to.

Blackstars - my DC both recently got a quite large inheritance, DS got it via 2 cheques shortly after his 18th (and just after we upgraded his youth account😂). He immediately got phone calls from branch manager asking him to contact her. When he did she just wanted to chat about his plans for the large amount of money!

It has since been spread into various accounts and bonds to drip feed into an ISA until he buys a house. Every single time that he closes an account or bond and filters it through Current account, he gets another phone call. It's a bit tedious.

How many people take advise from the big banks in investing money. We certainly don't, we have invested plenty of our own accord so quite able to help the kids invest theirs!

trilbydoll · 18/09/2017 17:18

I sold my car and the people unexpectedly turned up with £5k cash. I did the only logical thing and took a photo of the 3yo holding it Grin

And although annoying, it's good that the banks are phoning etc. I used to do accounts for an old lady who had £80k earning nothing in her current account. It's frankly negligent of the bank to not try and get it earning some interest income.
