Aibu skiing and ttc

I have the opportunity to ski early next year but am also considering starting to try for a baby late this year. The chance of me being pregnant seems slim so I really want to say yes I can go but if I was pregnant can I ski? Would you have wanted to in early pregnancy? This will be my first child. I am not a beginner but not a expert skier either. Thanks.

We managed to get two skiing holidays in during very early pregnancy, one at around 8 weeks and one a few weeks later at 12 weeks.
Can't. Say it was a great expierence with morning sickness though.
In your position I would still book it and see how it goes.

RoseRuby26 · 17/09/2017 12:49

Hadn't even considered that. Thanks.

I snowboarded when 5 months preggers they have me a tabard to wear with a big P on it, so they would stop the lifts as I got to the top to help me Grin it wasn't an issue

Elphame · 17/09/2017 12:52

It was the morning sickness that ruined it for me too but to be fair I did suffer a lot more nausea for a lot longer than most people do.

LIZS · 17/09/2017 12:55

Also fatigue, which like morning sickness may be worse at altitude. Your ligaments stretch so you may be more injury prone.

WineBeforeCake · 17/09/2017 13:00

It depends if you can already ski well?

Now, I would ski in early pregnancy (say maybe up to 4 months) but I'd go gentle and I know the chance of me falling over is pretty small.

I wouldn't ski when my centre of gravity changed which would be from about 5 months onwards. And I would not ski hard or in stupidly busy slopes with idiots lots of beginners likely to crash into me.

Until 3 months, your pelvis would protect the pregnancy in a fall anyway I guess.

But I wouldn't have skied as a beginner or even as an intermediate in pregnancy. I wouldn't have felt confident enough I could get myself to safety in a situation.

To be honest, the fresh air is great for morning sickness I found when I went.

I am normally auite a big risk taker but I definitely wouldn't ski during pregnancy. For one, I get really sick and tired, but really it is a dangerous sport and while you might be careful, you can't account for other dickheads people on the slopes.

JaniceBattersby · 17/09/2017 13:04

And I would go on the holiday and then TTC. Ski-ing with little kids is either really expensive or really tiring so it might be a few years before you can go again. I went the month before I got pregnant with my first and I haven't been since, seven years on. I really miss it.

allthecheese · 17/09/2017 13:04

I would definitely go ahead and book. The chances of you being pregnant are super slim, and as above, if you are a confident skier with little chance of falling the baby will be more than fine (I think they are very well protected anyway in the first 12 weeks).

Having said that, the first trimester is tough. I had morning sickness and a painful back from a couple of weeks in. So be prepared to not feel amazing if you are pregnant.

I've skied at 9-10 weeks pregnant, but probably wouldn't ski after the first trimester once the uterus starts leaving the pelvis. Also I am a good skier and I did take it easier than I normally would apart from that one wipe out when I was doing a jump it wasn't too frustrating taking the skiing down a gear - although I found I needed a nap after lunch, but having to forgo the apres ski was a bit galling...and had to really keep on top of the morning sickness!

RoseRuby26 · 17/09/2017 13:26

It will be in the first trimester if it happens. I am confident that I wouldn't fall but appreciate there are other people who could cause a fall. I would probably prefer to wait to ttc and book skiing but I'd promised partner end of this year. Right now I think I'd love to do it even in early pregnancy but I'm worried that if I am pregnant I'd be scared and waste the experience. Thanks so much for all the advice and experiences shared.

My mum happily skiied and rocked climed through her first trimester with me as she had no idea she was pregnant

I spent my first trimester vomiting and fainting...I could barely do normal life let alone ski.

I guess book but leave yourself the option to cancel nearer the time?

SunnyCoco · 17/09/2017 13:31

Only you can decide.
I've had two miscarriages this year, one relatively late on, so I wouldn't as I am so anxious about another loss.
But that's just my experience. And it makes you go over the top - I won't even have a sip of wine or a cup of coffee etc even though rationally I know it's fine.

Mustangsallyis · 17/09/2017 13:36

I skiied twice during both my pregnancies - once early and once at around 5-6 months.
I found it quite tiring but not prohibitively so.

Worst thing was that the first pregnancy at about 24 weeks I got smashed into by a snowboarder, sent flying, skis off and landed on my front. Everything was ok thankfully but it gave me a bit of a shock.

I'd say if you're a good skier and you feel comfortable skiing, then go for it. If you're unseasoned or tentative, then you may want to only stick to quiet times/areas.

randomsabreuse · 17/09/2017 13:38

I skiied at 11 weeks but booked last minute and didn't have morning sickness at all. All I needed was braces rather than belt and frequent pee stops. Did avoid high resort by going to Italy rather than France. Skied better than ever.

Top tip - don't wear cheap compression socks with walking boots on the plane - the blisters were evil.

Mustangsallyis · 17/09/2017 13:41

Meant to add that my obstetrician had no issues with me going in my last pregnancy and I managed to stay on my feet (skis).

So maybe go but keep your expectations of how much you might be able to do quite low so if you feel up to doing more it'll be a nice surprise

Doublechocolatetiffin · 17/09/2017 13:43

I skied early on in both of my pregnancies. One I had a healthy DD and one I miscarried (absolutely not ski related, although I did find out whilst on holiday which wasn't fun). I'd book it and make sure you have travel insurance. You may get pregnant immediately and then you can choose closer to the time or it may take months and you'll be sad to have missed it. What I've learnt is don't put things on hold because you are ttc, it makes the experience miserable. It can take ages and you don't want to spend all that time in limbo thinking but what if I get pregnant. If you have decent insurance you should be able to cancel if you feel awful so I'd just do that. Or if you want a great back up plan, then make sure you pick a resort with lots to do for non skiers. That way you can still go away and have fun but not ski if you don't want to.

randomsabreuse · 17/09/2017 13:43

I didn't stay entirely on my feet but only slither type transitions between being on skis/ my ass

WineBeforeCake · 17/09/2017 14:04

RoseRuby

Another take on it is that I had a really good time when I went on a ski holiday heavily pregnant and didn't ski, so I wouldn't worry about "wasting" it if you aren't feeling up to it when it happens. I had lots of fun pootling around, getting the odd walk on day lift pass to have nice lunches and met DH, reading in the fresh air and sunshine, and drinking lots of hot chocolate.

Gorgosparta · 17/09/2017 14:11

I put off ttc a few months for a holiday. Because i didnt want to have morning sickness during the trip. Also there is insurance to consider. We were planning on doing sports while away.

It was my choice to ttc. Only you can make your decision.

BeALert · 17/09/2017 14:42

I wouldn't be worried about the skiing or falling but I would be worried about morning (all day) sickness and nausea. The idea of feeling sick while on a chairlift....

TriJo · 17/09/2017 14:47

Given that I seem to get knocked up just by looking at a penis, I would book the holiday and start TTC afterwards. Treat it as a bit of a last hurrah.

PinkHeart5913 · 17/09/2017 14:51

I'd book it, no point in not planning anything just incase your pregnant as it could take months or even longer.

Every woman is different so Morning sickness may not even be a problem for you, None of the times I've been pregnant have I suffered with sickness.
