To think this is an unfair holiday entitlement?

Started a new job this year (retail if that's relevant, so work bank hols), and think the amount of holiday entitlement I've been given is unfair / possibly illegal..

I work 20 hours per week, usually over 5 days (contract states 20
Hours working 5 from 7 days).
My holiday entitlement is 14 days, but obviously to take a single week off I need to request 5 days leave, meaning in an entire year I would only get 2 & a half weeks off Shock
AIBU to question this?

The holiday year runs 1st May - 30th April, I started in June.

Everywhere I've looked states minimum holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks & if you work 5 days you're entitled to 28 days holiday so not sure how this company are getting around this?

It seems they've calculated my holiday assuming I would work 2.5 days in a week (which is 14 days leave using the 2.5 x 5.6 holiday calculation ) but I don't do 2.5 days Hmm

If thats how the system works, then you need the same number of days holiday as a full timer, thats one way round it

Visit the government website www.gov.uk/calculate-your-holiday-pay. You enter the details of your contract, start date and holiday year and it will calculate your holiday both in hours and in days. Your company cannot disagree with that website!

At 20 hours a week your annual entitlement is 112 hours, which based on a 52 week year is just over 2 hours weekly. You've worked since 25th June so you should have just under a quarter of 112 accrued, ie 28 hours.

If you work in hours you should get your annual leave entitlement in hours also. That's the only way it makes sense. Unless there has been an honest mistake it sounds like you are being diddled.

Thanks everyone, all seems to be sorted! Just a miscommunication & it turns out the holiday booking system online can have the duration of holidays changed so when I book one I just need to change it to 2.5 days instead of 5 Wink phew!
