How much to spend?

bloodyperiods · 16/09/2017 21:36

I've found a mattress I bloody love! It's £1499 a sealy Singapore mattress exclusive to Bendons for Beds. We can easily afford it.

DH says I'm being ridiculous to even consider spending that much. Do Sealy have something similar at a lower price? Our current bed is awful, we're both in pain every morning.

Am I being unreasonable to want a mattress worth that much?

I don't think £1.5K is too steep for a mattress at all however just be wary the Sealy mattresses for bensons aren't always the best.

I know from experience

bloodyperiods · 16/09/2017 21:38

Ooh @BumWad that doesn't sound good. Thank you though

Which did a recent review of mattresses. For a £1 subscription you can. Find out if you are better off saving a grand on a different but more suitable one.

BumWad · 16/09/2017 21:39

In fact that mattress looks identical to ours - latex topper on a sprung base.

Ours has sunk on both the edges where me and DH sleep

Have a look at the VI Spring ones instead that's what I'm going to spend my money on next time!

BeerBaby · 16/09/2017 21:40

Our mattress was £1k and we bloody love it!

bloodyperiods · 16/09/2017 21:42

@BeerBaby which one do you have?

OP posts:
bloodyperiods · 16/09/2017 21:44

Thanks @BumWad might steer clear! I've had a look at which? And they recommend the nostramo 1400 which is a lot cheaper! Might have to find a stockist.

We spent in that region too, but on a John Lewis own brand one (Egyptian cotton 7000 pocket sprung). The John Lewis ones come highly recommended (it's made by a fancy pants company I can't remember the name of 🤔) and if you buy in July or January you tend to get an extra 1000 springs for no additional cost (they call them special buys). It's made the world of difference. Sleep is so precious with young kids so we wanted to make sure the little we get is good quality!

TableMirror · 16/09/2017 21:45

I've just bought a super soft latex on springs for our spare room for about £350 from Dreams.

BUT think about the amount of time you spend in bed and how long you'll have the mattress for, per sleep it doesn't work out that much!

CountTessa · 16/09/2017 21:59

Ikea has a highly recommended one just over 500 quid

StepCatsmother · 16/09/2017 22:13

Like ImGoingForATwix we got ours from John Lewis too. It was more than I'd ever thought I would spend on a mattress and we paid extra for it to be different on each side (OH likes firm, I like medium) but it's the best money we ever spent - I've never slept so well.

So yes, money spent on a good mattress is money well spent, but just make sure you do your research!

DasPepe · 16/09/2017 22:46

A good mattress is money well spent - agree with all the posters!

We spent 1K on a mattress from a reputable retailer only to find the quality to decline quite soon after the return period had expired. And my back was even worse from sleeping on it.

Following that we did a lot more research and testing - our DD must have thought bed shops are where we live at weekends!
We decided on a Tempur memory foam over any other "memory" mattress. Along with a new / larger bed for all of us to fit in. Have been happy with it since 2013. Recently moved and valued the mattress as one of most important items!

Also we bought both at Evans sale and the mattress was cheaper than from Tempur directly. (So worth a look if they are near you). Memory foam does take a little time to get used to but we found it perfect. I'm quite light and all other mattresses would have a dip I'd fall into - created by my much heavier DH

BeerBaby · 16/09/2017 23:20

Mammoth. It's great!

Topsyloulou · 16/09/2017 23:25

We spent £900 on a silent night mattress & frame in January. The mattress is 2000 springs with a latex topper & so so comfortable. It's the best money I've ever spent & id have no issues spending more now I know how much difference a decent mattress can make to your quality of sleep. It's definitely worth investing in the best mattress you can afford.

Allthewaves · 16/09/2017 23:31

I went for mammoth sprung, as couldn't cope with pure foam. Very comfy and cool.

Puffpaw · 16/09/2017 23:42

I think ikea mattresses are best!

halesie · 16/09/2017 23:49

Our first mattress was around £160 from Ikea (1999). Spent years in pain with springs poking out but apparently it wasn't nearly bad enough to be refunded or replaced under their 10 year "guarantee" ☹️

Then got a Feather and Black Tennyson pocket sprung mattress in around 2009 for about £1.2k. So comfortable then and still is now. You can choose a different tension for each side too if one of you likes a softer/harder mattress.

Cheaper than a latte a week over 10 years. And may well last longer.

So I'm all in favour if you can afford it 🙂

GrannyHeadology · 16/09/2017 23:49

After 10 years of crappy ikea mattresses, bad backs and rubbish sleep we bought a tempur mattress for a silly amount of money. Best thing we ever did. Not regretted it once for the last 7 months.

StumpyScot92 · 17/09/2017 00:23

I used to work in bed sales, no mattress is exclusive to one store. They all claim to be but if you shop around you'll find the exact same spec (and mattress) elsewhere with a different name and probably in a different colour/stitch pattern etc.

Also don't get too hung up on brand names and looking for a comparable Sealy. A lot of the brand's like silentnight, Sealy etc sell the same mattress as smaller unknown brands but ramp up the price. A few exceptions to the rule I found are tempur who are the real kings of memory foam (would sell my left arm for a cloud mattress but dp would hate it). Best thing is get into shops lie on them properly, ignore anyone around you. Also a lot of places offer you the chance to exchange within a time period if you don't like it.

And 1.5k for a mattress is high end but definitely worth it if you're comfortable in it. Not to drag out the old sales person in me but you spend a third of your life in your bed, people spend double the cash on a couch to spend half the time on it without blinking an eyelid.

StumpyScot92 · 17/09/2017 00:26

Also on the whole mattress reviews aren't useful. The only thing you can take from it is if the mattress lasts. If you're looking at high end mattresses opinions are useless (one thing to read a review on a 200 quid mattress saying the springs are coming out but that's not going to be the case on a 1.5k one etc). What you like, what I like and what everyone else likes will always be different when it comes to firmness, springs Vs foam etc

bloodyperiods · 17/09/2017 00:27

@StumpyScot92 thank you so much!!! That's actually so helpful

StumpyScot92 · 17/09/2017 00:34

No problem, if you have any questions or that feel free to message me. Been in engineering for the last four years but I doubt beds have changed all that much ;)

bloodyperiods · 17/09/2017 00:37

@StumpyScot92 are Silent night and Sealy the same company? I read somewhere they were?

OP posts:
Nettletheelf · 17/09/2017 00:43

Of course it's not too much. A good night's sleep for ten years is worth £1500!

We bought a Hilary Devey mattress for a similar price and we bloody love it.

StumpyScot92 · 17/09/2017 00:44

Yep. As a general rule though their Sealy stuff is better quality than silentnight branded stuff of the same price point. If you see any silent night miracoils on your journeys avoid like the plague. They are so heavily overpriced for awful quality. Took more complaints about them than any other mattress. I used to try and talk people out of buying them and show them cheaper but better quality alternatives but they would be adamant because their granny swore by silentnight or whatever.
