To think Jo Malone candles are extremely overpowering?!

HurriedLovey · 16/09/2017 20:38

Just bought my fist one ever!

Thought it would be a lovely treat me everyone to enjoy!

Had to blow it out, the smell was making me feel sick. Far too overpowering and strong.

£40 wasted!

It was the pomegranate noir one.

Are they all like this?

Fire is lit but window is open 🔥

Prices are the best make of candles around.

Lovely smells. And proper pricing. £40 for a candle is bonkers.

SteampunkPrincess · 16/09/2017 20:40

get yourself to Aldi - £4 a candle!

BuzzKillington · 16/09/2017 20:45

I am not keen on Pomegranate Noir - smells quite cloying.

I do love Jo Malone candles. I burn them for 1.5 hours (the big ones) and the smell then lingers overnight. My fave is Lime, Basil and Mandarin.

PortiaCastis · 16/09/2017 21:06

May as well set fire to two twenty pound notes. £40 for a candle is ridiculous, it can't cost much to make a candle, surely you're just paying for the name.
Agree Aldi do very nice candles

helen650 · 16/09/2017 21:08

Yeah they're very strong and make me have a headache!

My friend handmakes candles and they are amazing - Cornish Candle Company.
Beautiful herbs from Cornwall and Cornish bees wax x

MrsPringles · 16/09/2017 21:11

I love my jo Malone pomegranate noir candle, I splurged on it and I am love it!

I bought the knock off from Aldi and its horrible, I binned it, was not impressed with at all Confused

KrytensNanobots · 16/09/2017 21:11

£40??? Shock

I love Yankee Candles. I'm a little bit addicted. Much better option and not as pricey!

Marylou2 · 16/09/2017 21:15

I prefer Diptyque but I love Yankee Candles wintery/christmassy tea lights

Mumof41987 · 16/09/2017 21:18

Tk maxx do amazing good branded candles for good prices

Bluntness100 · 16/09/2017 21:21

Agree, I've the large four wick lime and basil one and the living room is large and I have to blow it out as it gives me a headache and is too overpowering. The smaller one I find a little better but not much. I wouldn't buy anymore.

I love the white company Seychelles ones, I usually have two small ones going and they smell lovely, no head aches, and it's not like you took a wrong turn into lush when you walk into the room.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 16/09/2017 21:36

Can't be worse then Yankee Candles, or indeed stepping into a Yankee Candle shop. A hundred strong artificial smells coming at you at once, yuck.

opheliacat · 16/09/2017 21:39

Wild Bluebell is LOVELY.

My current favourite is a candle that smells of gin and tonic Grin Costs £20 but lots of burn time.

LilaBard · 16/09/2017 21:41

Candle Belle do little boxes of melts for very reasonable price, some dupes for more expensive scents too! takes a little bit longer as they are a very small company but the quality if excellent and they last ages

Kimonolady · 16/09/2017 21:58

I think expensive candles (Jo Malone, Diptyque too) can be really strong, but in a way that's the point? The idea being that you light them for a very short while, then blow them out and the scent should linger in the room/house for the rest of the day. That way, they'll last forever (just as well, considering how expensive they are!) Just use cheap unscented candles alongside if you like having something to provide a bit of a glow during the evening.

Woobeedoo · 16/09/2017 21:59

I really don't like the smell on pomegranate noir - I find it heavy, over powering and sickly. I did recently treat myself to a Jo Malone room fragrance jar with the sticks (I'm sorry, I've totally forgotten their proper name) in the basil, mandarin and lime and it is bloody gorgeous. And yes, Aldi made a copy of this fragrance which I thought at the time was lovely, but it's not a patch on Jo's.

opheliacat · 16/09/2017 22:01

I quite like Yankee Candles. I am partial to Christmas Cookie.

WellTidy · 16/09/2017 22:04

I love jo Malone candles, but I really don't like pomegranate noir. It is way, way too strong and heavy for me. I like all the floral ones especially red roses, but my favourites are pear and freesia, and lime basil and mandarin.

I echo a PP about white company seyscelles. It is gorgeous. Mine is enormous and fragrances the room without bring lit!

Halfsack · 16/09/2017 22:05

The whole point is that they're strong. Have you got it in a small room? You'd be pretty peeved spending £40 on a candle that didn't let off any fragrance. Try putting in a bigger room.

MamaOfTwos · 16/09/2017 22:05

OP I LOVE PG, so if you want to sell let me know!

specialsubject · 16/09/2017 22:07

Never had those, but have been given scented candles and had to leave them outside for a week once unwrapped. Lighting them was a bad mistake - choking fumes.

Parker231 · 16/09/2017 22:08

I love Jo Malone candles - they are my treat for a winter evening. Don't like Yankee Candles - artificial smell which makes me feel sick!

MulderitsmeX · 16/09/2017 22:13

Yes pomegranate noir is far too strong and such a "heavy" smell. It also gave me a headache. It was ok a few hours after burning as it had disapated a bit.

Diptyque bais is my favourite (unoriginal i know!). Their summer florals are also nice

The cornish candle co intrigues me, i think i will check the website out!.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 16/09/2017 22:19

Don't really like scented candles. A bit wary of them too (having said that limoline is in loads of stuff and I still use hairspray and cleaning products). Prefer to have an essential oil burner if anything but generally just open the window! It's probably not good to use them all the time.

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 16/09/2017 22:21

Limonene!

LaurieFairyCake · 16/09/2017 22:28

The problem with Jo Malone and Diptyque in particular is that you need a large room or a big airy hallway to burn them in.

If you blow them out before it's pooled entirely on the top you get tunnelling and waste the candle.

I only burn in the hallway as my living room is only 20 feet long.

Also, they're made with 'fake' scent and not essential oils. Ones made with essential oils are much more bearable and less headachey. You get less 'throw' with essential oils but the lighter scent can be burned for longer.

I'm currently after about 7 years fucking about with this about to set up my own candle company as I've finally perfected my 3 best scents. Just got to get the bloody labels right Hmm - I'm on my 6 reprint!
